Ellesmere Port, Wirral

My parents are looking to move to the Wirral. Just wondering why the houses in Ellesmere Port have come up so cheap?

It’s a shithole with a dirty great big oil refinery right next to it. The last time I went there it stank of shit.

Unfortunately agree with PP. What's their budget?

There are good and bad areas in most towns, but if I'm honest you'd find it hard to find the good in Ellesmere Port. It's quite run down so I'd seek alternatives

This is in a much nicer area, with easy access to lovely countryside and beaches, and a decent bus service to Liverpool and Chester

Depends which side of Ellesmere Port really, ledsham is nice but I don't think you'd get much change from £200k. There are nice parts of great Sutton, little Sutton and Whitby too.

Stanney Oaks used to be considered very nice but only a stones throw from the stanney and the saying used to be 'well they don't rob their own houses do they?'

Giant m&s at Cheshire oaks is very nice!

Most of Ellesmere Port is a hole.

Try Eastham/Bromborough.

Agree- Ellesmere Port not v nice but there are some better (and more expensive) areas nearby eg Whitby, Capenhurst, mollington,

The west side of the Wirral- Neston and west Kirby side - is nicer than the east side imho, it has the nicer countryside and beaches but again, more expensive than the east side.

Is there somewhere your parents need to be near eg for work?

Thanks for the replies. My mums dream is to live in New Brighton, but my dad is adamant he has a garage, which is hard to find with the money they have.

Yep agree with all those places to avoid!

Yes, I've lived on the Wirral all my life and very generally speaking the side on the river Dee is much nicer than that on the river Mersey.

Little Sutton is perfectly nice, not naice perhaps, but quiet with some attractive features e.g. sweet little library and community centre which has painting classes and pilates, quite a few period homes, a clean park, a garden centre and a few nice independent shops as well as a Tesco. There's a bowls club and a Little Sutton history society. It's nicest at the Childer Thornton and Hooton end and you would get a house with a garage for £200k.

Heswall, Oxton, West Kirby, and Meols are all considered better areas of the Wirrral and would be categorised as more middle class with accompanying shops and facilities.

Ellesmere Port is quite a run down little place with higher crime than the areas mentioned - but I think 'shit hole' is a bit unnecessary. Why do people have to be so rude.

I grew up in Little Sutton and now live in Crosby in Liverpool and absolutely love it - real cafe culture and close to the beach if your parents will consider 'over the water'.

What is it about New Brighton that appeals to your mum, @FerryCrossTheMersey? I've lived near there and some bits are nice and some really quite, erm, shabby.

Agree with PPs that the west side of the M53 is generally nicer, with some really pleasant areas on the east but relatively fewer than the west. That does make a difference to house prices though. Obviously quality of life is affected by things like awful neighbours, which you can get stuck with in any area, but I do think you notice a significant day-to-day difference between a rougher area and a nicer one.

I used to live in Birkenhead and posted on here about people using my front garden as a toilet. And my library books were overdue and the librarian offered me the opportunity to pay the fine in instalments instead of £1.70 all at once...

I’ve asked my mum why she loves New Brighton so much, but she doesn’t have an answer, it’s just a feeling she gets when she arrives at the train station (she was there three weeks ago).

The river Dee side is lovely, especially West Kirby, but houses are a bit out of budget there.

Birkenhead seems to cover a large area, is there a better side?

OP - Ellesmere Port is grim - so is New Brighton to be honest. Have your parents considered somewhere like Eastham/Bromborough/Some parts of Neston. West side of the Wirral is gorgeous

I've lived in New Brighton for over 20 years and I love it. Its definitely an up and coming area. Whilst it has its dodgy bits, large areas are very nice.

Yes, West wirral is "naicer", but is considerably less affordable.

There is a better side to birkenhead, think Prenton / Oxton, but will be as expensive as the west coast. Wouldnt live in Seacombe.

I know what your mum means. Theres something about coming on the train from Liverpool and the train turns to run parallel to the promenade, and this vast expanse of Liverpool Bay stretches before you. Particularly when the weathers good.

Your dads right about the garages tho.

If it wasn't for the lack of garage, I'd suggest this in Port Sunlight. I always thought if I had to move back to the other side of the M53 it would be to Port Sunlight village, which is idyllic.

This one does have a garage and some questionable decor, but there's change from £200k...

And this shows there are some out there, although they're not the prettiest of properties and need a little TLC. Bebington is quite nice though.

(Avoid anything with a Ferry in it!)

I grew up on the Wirral and prefer the Dee side. West Kirby and Heswall are expensive but Neston is nicer than those places named 'Ferry' and cheaper than WK and Heswall area. Pensby and Thingwall areas should also be considered.
Also what about Port Sunlight?

I think New Brighton is great for a day out - I live in Crosby. I think it's unfair to call a place a "shit hole" though. All areas have good and bad and obviously some areas are a lot better than others. If it's what your mum really wants she needs to research it properly.

Oh Christ deffo avoid all those areas!! And add on Birkenhead to the list!!
Wallasey village is lovely,

I went to Port Sunlight last year with my mum, and I loved it!
My mum has just started looking at Wallasey village. It seemed ok when driving through on the train.

What are the thoughts on Liscard?

Ellesmere Port town centre & immediate area is a bit run down, not unlike lot’s of older towns in the country. However, calling it a shit hole is unnecessary & rude.

The Oil refinery (I worked there), does not actually affect Great Sutton regarding smell, & in EP town centre you cannot smell it, lots of rules & regulations in place now meaning the owners have to be very careful (quite rightly) of anything released into the atmosphere.

I actually live in Great Sutton, which on the whole is a fairly quiet & decent place to live. You should be able to buy a 3 bed semi for the £200,000 budget. There are some nice areas in Little Sutton, & in Ledsham area lots of new houses are being built, but out of budget, similarly to the new houses being built in Hooton.
