Nephew should be quarantining but isn't

TheOrigBrave · 26/08/2020 12:27

Teenager living at home. Just came back from a country where he is required to quarantine on her return.

I can see from my activity tracking app that he is out running.

I don't know if my sister (his Mum) knows and even if she did if there is much she can do, bar locking him in her room or chucking him out.

Do I have some sort of duty to say something or shall I just keep out of it?

OP posts:
PhilCornwall1 · 26/08/2020 17:15

I think it's hurtful to say I am not a nice person or that you're glad you're not part of my family.

Well are you surprised people have said that, considering you came on here seeing if you needed to "do your duty", when all he's done is go for a run. He didn't bugger off down the pub and have a skinful around a load of other people did he.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 26/08/2020 17:28

@YetAnotherSpartacus

The selfishness of some is astounding.
You are not kidding

The selfishness of some people getting a power kick for reporting others.

(And I am not including the OP in this as I it didn't seem like that was her motivation and I think she has at least realised that tale telling is not a good idea - the main thing she would achieve is permanently alienating her nephew - and it looks as though they currently have a pretty good relationship as he has added her to his app)

The lad is out running - he couldn't infect anyone even if he had it and the chances of that, as others have pointed out, is close to zero.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 26/08/2020 17:32

The attitude on here is EXACTLY why we will still be living like this next year.

You are absolutely correct OP. He is meant to be in quarantine. Quarantine does not mean going out and about..

But I also blame the government's pathetic 'guidance'.. To 'quarantine' under the Bojo government, you can come back into the UK from a place deemed to require quarantine.. get on a plane with the possibility of carrying Covid 19. Get off the other end where there is not a soul to pass the 'track and trace' details to - that you were asked to complete on the flight. (So after looking and asking where to hand the details in, - at the country's second largest airport, you end up putting them in the bin. .. ) At this point you should 'try' not to get public transport home. Once at home you can stay with family or friends (who can go out to work , (hospital, care home, factory) ... so can happily spread the virus to all and sundry..

It's the biggest load of bollocks . This government obviously has not the slightest idea of how to prevent a virus spreading or how to minimise the spread.

My son arrived Sunday night. Because neither he or the rest of his family are imbeciles, we dropped his car off at the airport having booked him an Airbnb for 2 weeks. And filled it with enough food for the duration. Where he will stay, doing exercise in the garden when required . Because he and we are responsible.

I would have no hesitation in reporting someone who doesn't quarantine. This is a PUBLIC health issue and the 'not my business' attitude is EXACTLY why it will last for years and kill many many thousands more.

@SimonJT

Meh, its a run.

My boyfriend landed from Sweden yesterday so he has to isolate for 14 days. You don’t magically appear where ever you are going to isolate, you have to get there. So he used the heathrow express and the tube.

Seems stupid that he can use public transport but he shouldn’t go for a walk etc. You are of course allowed to buy food and medicines while self isolating.

Yes, and anyone else in the house who hasn't travelled can go about business as usual. It's made up nonsense designed to try to punish people for travelling abroad. Nice if you have so much dosh you can hire a bloody AirB&B with a garden for a fortnight and stow it full of food Hmm.

This is going to last many years because it's hard to develop a vaccine for a sars virus. We're all going to have to just chunter on and the Airstrip One Wannabes are just going to have to find something else to wet their pants about. But not to worry, no deal Brexit will be here soon.

So Are you saying that the virus is spread by breaking the rules - however ridiculous they are

and not as we have been told that it is

Coming into close contact with another person for a period of time long enough to share the air they are breathing and that person to be one of the one in 2200 people currently infected.

I'm so glad you are here to inform me of the FACTS

You'd better make sure you live a whiter than white (are we still allowed to say that?) life from now on then. Never break a rule, no matter how ridiculous you think it is.

To be honest, that goes for anyone who shouts REPORT!!! Or has actually reported.

What you would report someone for going for a run, where the chance of them spreading Covid (if they even have it) is minute? Jesus......

And bully for you having the dosh to get an Air B n B for 2 weeks for your son to quarantine in!

I actually would give your sister the heads up that uploading to Strava is risky. They don't want to get slammed with a fine.

FancyMinion · 26/08/2020 18:54

In Australia, the volunteer quarantine didn’t work - it was very difficult to enforce for many reasons. You were meant to not take public transport from airport and stay in a room away from the rest of the household. And strictly no leaving the house for 14 days.

It was found that at least two thirds of people breached home quarantine (from home visit spot checks to see if people were complying).

Because people could not stick to home quarantine, now when you return from abroad to Australia, there is a military escort to a secure hotel and you must stay there for 14 days with a guard on your floor. At first the national govt paid this cost - now people must pay for themselves (it is compulsory to stay at the hotel).

The UK won’t implement this secure hotel arrangement - we will just end up with a load more cases originating from abroad. Just watch the numbers increase in the next month ......

God, yes, just like they exploded exponentially after VE Day and then when people went to Bournemouth, or to BLM demos, when Scottish schools went back, pubs opened . . .

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 26/08/2020 19:03

First it was 'Save the NHS' now it's covid elimination at all costs.

PhilCornwall1 · 26/08/2020 19:08

@InDeoEstMeaFiducia

Definitely, but anyone with half an ounce of common sense knows won't happen
NailsNeedDoing · 26/08/2020 19:14

He’s out running ffs. It’s going to affect no one. The government was unreasonable for saying that people in quarantine couldn’t go out for solitary exercise in the first place.

FattyBoom · 26/08/2020 19:29

The thing is if he is happy to break the rules by going out for a run, what other circumstances will he be happy breaking the rules for? Going to the pub? Seeing his mates?

I really hope all the 'don't get involved' people don't start whinging if things start shutting down again. After all, the thousands of people that believe they are special and rules don't apply to them 'aren't doing anything wrong'

SoManyActivities · 26/08/2020 19:39

Well er no, because going for a run doesn't involve seeing or having contact with anyone else, going to the pub does. They are totally different things and anyone with an ounce of common sense should be able to weigh up the risks of both and realise that going for a run is not going to spread Covid in the way the going to the pub potentially could.

roarfeckingroarr · 26/08/2020 20:08

These threads are so tedious

You're not the police

Keep out of it

eveningsong · 26/08/2020 20:26

My attitude would probably depend on where in the country concerned he had been. In France very different between Marseille and La Rochelle for example.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 26/08/2020 20:30

The main reason for many of the more stupid rules is social and mainstream media hysteria.

Boris is a pratt - I think most agree that, but he wants to be liked, so he reads twitter (or his advisors do) and bases what he should do next based on who shouts loudest.

Who shouts loudest, the hysterics that think they are more important than anyone else and everything should revolve around what they thing is safe.

No quarantine - omg the masses are baying for quarantines
No masks - omg the masses are baying for masks
No masks in school - oh wait - the masses are shouting again, let's have masks in schools

It's fucking pathetic

DuckonaBike · 26/08/2020 20:35

Well I’m in quarantine, and I would love to go for a run, but I can’t, because I’m in quarantine. So I think he’s a selfish fucker. Not all of us think we are above the rules.

I doubt there is anything you can do about it though.

BogRollBOGOF · 26/08/2020 21:02

I think it's already been proven that going for a run has failed to cause a second wave, (even if out for 61+ minutes) and that runners really haven't been out breathing Covid all over people. A solo run, outdoors is very low risk, and he is still low risk fir carrying the infection in the first place.

Breaking quarantine by doing a solo, healthy, low risk activity is very different to going out to crowded indoor places, particularly such as pubs if alcohol and reduced inhibitions are involved.

SimonJT · 26/08/2020 21:03

@InDeoEstMeaFiducia He is in an airbnb, I booked it for two nights but I’m hoping he’ll see sense and come home tomorrow. But yes, its bizarre that he can live at home as normal, I can kiss him etc and still going on with my life as normal. Hes been in hospital for surgery and had a few weeks in a hotel being used for rehab, he has had daily covid tests since being in the rehab unit and they have all been negative.

AuditAngel · 26/08/2020 21:13

I know someone who has been to Spain since quarantine came in, including posting on Facebook; and then published pictures onlin3 of her out with family/friends.

Unfortunately the police don’t want to receive reports, so not much can be done

MoggyP · 26/08/2020 21:21

And then we wonder why so many medics think a second wave is unavoidable

If quarantining people are OK to be going out, then the quarantine rules wouid permit it

SoManyActivities · 26/08/2020 21:35

Well I’m in quarantine, and I would love to go for a run, but I can’t, because I’m in quarantine.

Honestly, if you want to go for a run just go for a run - it's totally different to going to the shops or the pub or to work, the risk of you spreading Covid by going for a run is absolutely tiny, especially when the risk of you actually having Covid is really small already. You won't be touching anything or be in contact with anyone so there is no risk.

I'm not encouraging recklessness or actively putting others in danger, but people seem to have lost all grasp on common sense!
