Nephew should be quarantining but isn't

TheOrigBrave · 26/08/2020 12:27

Teenager living at home. Just came back from a country where he is required to quarantine on her return.

I can see from my activity tracking app that he is out running.

I don't know if my sister (his Mum) knows and even if she did if there is much she can do, bar locking him in her room or chucking him out.

Do I have some sort of duty to say something or shall I just keep out of it?

I am NOT tracking anyone, I am following the progress of someone who chose to add me to their list of people who can follow them.
Do some research on Strava.

So if he is just going for a run, then what is the problem?

TheOrigBrave · 26/08/2020 13:30

If you're in quarantine you're not meant to leave the house.

Rather than blindly following arbitrary rules, ask yourself what harm he is doing to anyone? Weigh up the risks of his behaviour, in comparison to that of any other person, and then decide what to do.

Venicelover · 26/08/2020 13:37

There is a lot of it going on. My friends daughter has just returned from Croatia and is not quarantining. It irks me because she has given her mother a dog's life over 'adhering to the lockdown rules' and her she is being a hypocrite of the highest order.

wishingitwasfriday · 26/08/2020 13:39

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito

Given the chances of him having it are the square root of fuck all, I'd keep out of it and stop electronically tracking your family.
You should tell the people of a town outside of Bath that. Two young lads returned from holiday but, rather than quarantine, they went to the local pub, and another.... pubs have been shut for deep cleaning and the result is 31 people have been diagnosed within a week of each other. All had been in the pubs with these guys, or live with those who have.

I have seen this a lot over the last few months - people being sanctimonious over 'the rules' when it suits them, but as soon as 'the rules' inconvenience them the suddenly they have x y z justifications as to why they can break them.

Still don't think a run matters though, you do have to use your common sense a bit in these matters.

TheOrigBrave · 26/08/2020 14:35

@SoManyActivities

2 things:

Weird that you can track your nephews movements, I know you said it's a Strava type thing, but it's still weird.

If he has just gone out for a run... So what? If he is not coming into proper contact with anyone or any surfaces then it doesn't matter does it?

I really don't think it's weird to follow people's sporting activities that they voluntarily upload to an app. It's fun and interesting and supportive. Why do you think it's weird?

The quarantine rules are ridiculous. Even if your nephew HAS covid, he is not going to infect anyone going for a run.

MsTSwift · 26/08/2020 14:57

The rules are ridiculous. What finished it for me was the government suddenly saying workers had to return to offices for the economy! Makes a nonsense of all these “rules” it’s way more risky sitting in an office for 9 hours in a large open plan office talking to numerous people than it is self catering with your family in France 🙄🙄. Utterly daft.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 26/08/2020 15:05

He's not going to a pub, he's going for a run. Utterly stupid and ridiculous to make up some arbitrary rule about not leaving your home at all for 2 weeks. People aren't going to do it because it's bullshit.

MsTSwift · 26/08/2020 15:50

The reason the majority follow rules is they make sense (stop at red traffic lights etc). The government are playing a dangerous game bringing in a plethora of seemingly random pointless rules that most reasonable adults can see make little practical sense then the curtain twitcher brigade (ie this op) get their thrills policing it.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 26/08/2020 15:51

The selfishness of some is astounding.

Yeah, going for a run in the open air, so 'selfish'.

Covid had this nasty side effect of people turning into snitches.. Spying at neighbours, checking if relatives are compliant.. OP, why stop at informing your sister, maybe you should go straight yo police. I am glad you are not my relative

💯
MsTSwift · 26/08/2020 16:15

Absolutely. But imagine the awful realisation that you really are that sort of person who begrudges your own nephew going on a run!

itsgettingweird · 26/08/2020 16:21

People should research strays before making ill informed judgements on electronically tracking.

I think exercise is fine (not 100% sure but we could during lockdown). As long as he isn't mixing the probably already fairly low risk is lower.

Perhaps a friendly text to remind him if he is breaking rules he can be fined and to check what they are and be careful what he posts.

upsidedownwavylegs · 26/08/2020 16:28

Why on earth did you obfuscate the description of Strava like that Grin it wouldn’t have made you identifiable, I think quite a few people use it!

SimonJT · 26/08/2020 16:40

Meh, its a run.

My boyfriend landed from Sweden yesterday so he has to isolate for 14 days. You don’t magically appear where ever you are going to isolate, you have to get there. So he used the heathrow express and the tube.

Seems stupid that he can use public transport but he shouldn’t go for a walk etc. You are of course allowed to buy food and medicines while self isolating.

Oh I don't know! There are other activities trackers.

Actually I've changed some details and been vague in other places.

TheOrigBrave · 26/08/2020 17:03

Consensus seems to be that quarantine is ridiculous and certainly imposing no running is even more so.

The way people have reacted/conformed to government rules/guidelines during the pandemic is very interesting from a social behaviour POV.

I think it's hurtful to say I am not a nice person or that you're glad you're not part of my family.

OP posts:
Ihaventgottimeforthis · 26/08/2020 17:13

Your nephew is an idiot breaking quarantine rules and uploading electronic evidence that he has done so.

Whether or not people think quarantine rules are pointless, they're still the rules.

If it was my sister, I'd mention it.
