We have been looking for a new house for ages and have finally found 2 we really like. We need to decide by tomorrow which to offer on but can’t decide which area is better. Can anyone who knows the areas offer their opinion? Thanks

Who are you?
Do you need schools?
Are you going to commute to Manchester by car or public transport or is motorway access important.
How near Metrolink are you if you are going use it.
Some decent restaurants in Whitefield plus supermarkets aldi and morrisons with nearby tesco.
Good on Whitefield but not as good on Stretford.

Mirrorxx · 25/08/2020 19:30

We are 30 and about to start a family. We would be traveling to the centre by tram and both houses are 10 minutes walk to the tram.
Everything I’ve heard says Stretford is nicer but it looks a bit tatty when we’ve visited

Where in Stretford is the house? Some bits are nice but some is still rough as.

GeordieLass01 · 25/08/2020 19:33

Have another look at each area tomorrow before main a decision, focus on what’s important to you and what you need to get out of an area. Trip advisor, local boards and Facebook groups will be helpful to you.

Starisnotanumber · 25/08/2020 19:38

If you go for Whitefield then you are under Bury council how are schools near where you are thinking about.
Are religious places important there are synagogues and churches with mosques in nearby Bury.
Bury is OK for shopping has The Rock Centre right in the middle of town.
Don't know Stretford though

Mirrorxx · 25/08/2020 19:42

@gobbynorthernbird it’s near gorse hill park

OP posts:
gobbynorthernbird · 25/08/2020 19:47

@Mirrorxx in that case it wouldn't be for me.
I've got family who have relatively recently moved from near the allotments in Gorse Hill and they didn't rate it.

I know very little about Whitefield off the main drag, but I'm in Prestwich and love it.

Starisnotanumber · 25/08/2020 19:50

Can you give vague location of Whitefield property as well. Like most places some areas are better than others

Mirrorxx · 25/08/2020 19:51

@gobbynorthernbird this is the other side of gorse hill towards Longford Park. What is that part like?

OP posts:
ForSaleChesterDraws · 25/08/2020 19:53

Don’t go for Gorse Hill estate. Either look towards Urmston, or look off St John’s Road in Old Trafford.

Whitefield is proper surburbia, if you want that site if thing.

gobbynorthernbird · 25/08/2020 19:54

So towards King's Road? It's still a nope from me.

joecormac · 25/08/2020 19:56

I live in Urmston - but my whole family are from Stretford. As someone said - it’s got it’s good and bad areas.
I hate the Arndale/Stretford Mall but apparently there’s new bars/restaurants that have started up that are great. I just don’t know how they will get past the ugliness of it.

Houses around Victoria Park are nice. And if you drive towards Chorlton there are some great streets off Edge Lane leading towards Longford Park.

For me - I wish it had more of a town centre.

Come to Urmston!

Starisnotanumber · 25/08/2020 19:59

Would call Kings Road Prestwich. It has its own vibe as it is very Jewish community with shops and culture of its own.

cabinbythelake20 · 25/08/2020 20:00

Whats your budget? I can help?

UnfinishedSymphon · 25/08/2020 20:00

I second Urmston, more expensive but it’s got everything you need. I’ve lived here all my life and wouldn’t move anywhere else...unless I had a lottery win!

Mirrorxx · 25/08/2020 20:07

Our max budget is 400. We’ve looked at urmston but there’s nothing for sale and we need to find something quickly.
The whitefield house is off Radcliffe new road

OP posts:
Starisnotanumber · 25/08/2020 20:18

Not a bad area in Whitefield glad you hadn't looked at the other side of Bury New Road which is not as nice

cabinbythelake20 · 25/08/2020 20:18

Honestly if I had your budget I wouldn't choose either of those places!

Have you considered Sale/Ashton Mersey?

Where are you moving from?

gobbynorthernbird · 25/08/2020 20:19

Honestly, OP. You've not got a bad budget, and it sounds like you're not currently tied to any particular area, so do you have to buy now?

Neither of the areas you're looking at is massively appealing.

The people I know who know about this stuff are advising to sell now, and then rent for 6 months before buying again. Or rent for another 6 months, if that's your current status.

cabinbythelake20 · 25/08/2020 20:24

I found this property on the Rightmove Android app and wanted you to see it: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-72388878.html

I'm not sure what style of house you are after, but you can get a decent size house for your budget in much nicer areas! Urmston / Sale / Worsley. Better schools too!

Mirrorxx · 25/08/2020 20:28

We currently live in salford quays and have sold our house. Ideally we want to move before the stamp duty holiday ends.
The criteria are on the tram line, 3 bedrooms, big kitchen and ideally 2 bathrooms and office space

OP posts:
Mirrorxx · 25/08/2020 20:28

We have looked at sale and altrincham but there isn’t anything in budget

Hellothere19999 · 25/08/2020 20:32

I’m from urmston and stretford is rough as! Might be coming up abit coz of Chorlton and Didsbury been cool tho but people still get shot there. Dunno about the other place sorry 😬 even when I was at uni tho I was scared of the kids that got on the bus at Stretford. Maybe if you are in a nice bit it’s okay, everywhere has rough parts 🤷🏻‍♀️

cabinbythelake20 · 25/08/2020 20:41

I found this property on the Rightmove Android app and wanted you to see it: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-95675750.html

This house and others nearby is minutes away from a tram station!

Are you totally set on Whitefield or stretford?

wowfudge · 25/08/2020 20:58

What about Monton and walking to Eccles for the tram or taking the bus?
