Control your fucking dogs

ThunderSkies · 25/08/2020 19:16

I’m so angry. Yet again someone can’t control their dog and my dc is even more afraid due to some massive dog leaping up at their face and mouthing at them (very young, but big dog).

If they have no recall and keep jumping up at people (and are at the mouthing people stage still) don’t fucking let them be able to get out of control.

Dog ran away from owners, out of the garden and my child ran towards the road. I’m so 😡. Why did I come away feeling like my son was to blame for running and shouting (yes it excites the dog, no I can’t stop him doing it when he’s scared and the dog is chasing him). Yes the dog was playing. No, it makes no difference to my child when the dog can jump higher than he is tall.

@CostaCosta

I hate this! We recently had a dog run up to us, terrify our ds while we were having a picnic and ate our sandwiches. The dog owner said nothing! Gave us a look like we did something wrong????
Most parks have places for you to sit and eat your sandwiches out of the reach of dogs. If you choose to picnic where people go to exercise their dogs and the dog eats your sarnies, then use your brains and don't sit on the grass.
AriesTheRam · 25/08/2020 22:25

I get it to a certain extent. The amount of dogs we saw off lead last month on a no dog allowed beach was ridiculous and there should be more done to stop it.Running into the road at 11 is ridiculous though imo.I assumed he was 2 or 3.

TinkersTailor · 25/08/2020 22:27

I get it OP. Some dog owners are self-absorbed bastards and believe that everyone should adore their stinky, dirty dog as much as they do.

DD has been terrified ever since a dog, off the lead, ran up to her in the park mistaking the toy in her hand for a treat. Owner was no where to be seen until DD let out the most ear-splitting shriek, owner came running over all red faced and shouty to say 'Did she bite you? No? Well then what are you screaming like that for, silly girl?! You frightened me!' I couldn't hold my tongue and gave the woman such a mouthful, asked for her details and threatened to inform the police; DD was only 3 at the time.

I'm also fed up of owners with dogs on an extendable lead, letting their dog walk a good bit in front of them, then saying to cowering DD 'oh she/he won't hurt you' - you can't possibly know that!

This thread may not end well. But I think dog owners need to see things from the perspective of people who are not involved with their precious pooch.

We don't know you, we don't care, but if a dog runs for me again I have a little bottle of hairspray in my pocket and will use it on that dog's eyes no problem anymore.

Sorry now, but my safety is worth more to me than an out of control dog's life. End of.

How many children have been killed by dogs? One is too many IMV.

DaughterX · 25/08/2020 22:28

AnOrdinaryMum Most parks have places for you to sit and eat your sandwiches out of the reach of dogs. If you choose to picnic where people go to exercise their dogs and the dog eats your sarnies, then use your brains and don't sit on the grass.

In my previous example the dog owners had taken their dogs into a gated area past multiple signs saying 'dogs must be on leads' and the dog (off lead) then proceeded to eat the sandwiches. So sometimes you cannot tell if someone is going to exercise their dog there or not even if there are rules saying it's not allowed. By avoiding "places where people go to exercise their dogs" you couldn't eat outside of your own property as they're exercised everywhere whether they're 'allowed' to or not!

PopcornAndWine · 25/08/2020 22:29

@Anordinarymum I've a much better idea - how about people just control their dogs properly and don't let them eat other people's picnics? Was in the park the other day with my toddler and she ran over towards a group of people picnicking and was absolutely going to try and steal their strawberries. You know what? I stopped her because that's my responsibility to do so. I doubt the picnickers would have taken kindly to me saying "oh well, you chose to eat in a park where people bring their children to run around".

BogRollBOGOF · 25/08/2020 22:30

I generally like dogs having grown up with giant breeds, but I hate "friendly dogs" which are entirely the cause of my DCs' fear of them starting back to DS1 having his lunch wrestled out of his hand whenhe was still in the pram. I can't remember the number of times that the DCs have been jumped up at or even bowled over.

My retort to "he's friendly" is "the child isn't"

Mind you given this calibre of dog owner's inability to recognise obvious fear in their own species, it's no wonder they're bloody useless at training dogs.

I regularly walk the local woods and accept that the bottom inches of my trousers may get mud on them. That does not mean I accept streaks of mud and slob from random dogs ruining my clothes for the day. I had words with a stupid owner whenI had to tell her dog to "get down" after jumping up for a third time. Apparently I scared the dog by telling it off Hmm The stupid woman finally, grudgingly put the dog on its lead.

I've spent years encouraging my children to stand still. To put out a hand for the dog to sniff so it will then bugger off. We get a couple of steps forward then another idiot owner sets us back by letting their feckless furball bounce around all over.

I know not all owners are like this, and the significant minority of antisocial owners ruin it for the rest of them.

Owners are legally obliged to keep their dogs under control at all times, not causing distress to others.

Turgha · 25/08/2020 22:30

It would be so much better if dog walkers assumed that every passer-by they encounter doesn’t like being greeted by their dog, and therefore keep it well away, unless/until they discover different. Currently it feels like it’s the other way round.

ArabellaScott · 25/08/2020 22:31

YANBU, OP.

Dog owners need to control their dogs. I mean, it's the law. And it's plain good manners. Of course not everyone loves dogs or wants to be jumped on. Hope you and your son are okay. And hope your neighbour apologises.

ComeAlive · 25/08/2020 22:33

I have this a lot too OP. This week in a park with 5 year old and 2 year old and dog comes bounding up to yapping. Lazy bloody owner shouts “he won’t bite”. By which point I had to kick it away from us, not a kick to hurt it but to shoo it away. 5 year old scared, 2 year old freezes on the spot. Owner sitting on her a@se doing nothing. I’d love to see a law whereby all dogs have to wear a muzzle in public. Also one for their bums, fed up with treading in dog poo when playing in the park, going for a walk. I love animals but seriously starting to dislike all dogs now. Fed up with me or my children being sniffed, licked or jumped upon. Your anger is justified OP. Ignore the comments about what you are doing about your sons phobia. That’s not the issue here, just deflection.

Anordinarymum · 25/08/2020 22:35

If you are having a picnic and are seated at a picnic table then dogs can't get at the sarnies.

Simples.

Let's have a thread about people who don't keep their children under control when I walk past with my dogs who are not interested in anything other than going for a walk.

Let's have a thread about equal tolerance.

Most dog owners are out every day rain or shine in those parks you picnickers use randomly when the sun is shining and leave all of your rubbish behind endangering wildlife.
The bins overflow with the rubbish you won't or can't take home and my dogs will eat food you discard on the ground because you can't be bothered and have no respect for the place you have visited.

It's give and take

africanantelope · 25/08/2020 22:35

I hate dogs. And dog people. I don't give a shit how much you love your dog just get it away from people who you don't know.

TheoneandObi · 25/08/2020 22:36

Me and my children have literally never been jumped at by a dog. We got our first one when they were 8 and 10 and never, before or after have they been jumped at. And we are outdoorsy people who spent lots of time at parks and beaches and stuff.
Maybe we're really lucky but it truly amazes me that ppl say most times they go out they get jumped at.
I have sadly however on many occasions had to carry a child at arms length after they trod in dog poo. Makes me v angry as a dog owner that others cannot pick up after their creatures.

TinkersTailor · 25/08/2020 22:36

I carry a small can of compressed air in my handbags for the same reason. Dog comes near DD or I and doesn't back off, starts barking , hackles go up, owner can't call it back.. anything like that and it's getting sprayed.

Sad that I have to do that but it seems indulgent owners who treat their dogs like a child are becoming more abundant.

TheHappening · 25/08/2020 22:37

Dog owners need to realise that not everybody is as indulgent of their dog as they are.

I don't particularly care for dogs, I don't kick them or anything but i'm just not interested. You might think they are cute and sweet and everyone wants to say hi, but actually I have no interest in your dog and would rather you controlled it.

Dog owners (not all) seem to be in a world of their own where everyone is as indulgent with their pets as they are. We're not. I don't want your dog near me, I don't want to be tangled up in your ridiculous long line, I don't want to be covered in bloody dog hair. You made the choice to own a pet, please realise that many of us didn't and have no interest in your animal.

bettytaghetti · 25/08/2020 22:37

@QuentinInQuarantino

I love dogs.

It is dog owners that are selfish shits. A dog stole our entire picnic once in a non-dog park. Took ds sandwich out of his hand leaving its slobber everywhere. Owner sauntered on by refusing to apologise. DC also quite nervous now.

Also the poo, that they don't pick up because it's on the grassy bit next to the pavement and not the pavement itself. Or worse, lightly covered with sand on the beach and then dc end up putting hands in it when building sandcastles.

I'd say there should be rules, like dogs on leads, but there are and they're ignored by the owners.

It is some dog owners that are selfish shits.

There you go, I corrected it for you. Just as there are irresponsible people in all walks of life, not every dog owner behaves the way you describe.

8thArmouredBrigade · 25/08/2020 22:38

I’m with you op.
We’re not great walkers but recently decided we needed to do more exercise. We went to a local country park and there were dogs running loose all over the place with their stupid owners smiling on indulgently. Won’t be going again. Idiots.

Anordinarymum · 25/08/2020 22:39

The people who don't clear their animal's poo up need a swift kick where the sun don't shine.. and those who leave the poo bag on the edge of the grass or failing that hang it from a tree... WTF
yolio · 25/08/2020 22:39

Dogs are not humans although many owners think they are.

Humans have to learn not to shit on the road, they have to get an education, they have to earn money to live.

Dogs are ridiculous appendages for many badly trained owners.

NoImNotEntertained · 25/08/2020 22:40

Agree with @Shizzlestix. I don't get it, I honestly don't. It's not hard, just train your dog, carry treats, work on their recall. If they have crap recall keep them on a lead until they don't have crap recall.

My dog isn't allowed to approach anyone, even if they are smiley and friendly. He just isn't. And he knows it, so he doesn't. There's no excuse for dogs jumping on people.
Just a lot of clueless, lazy, inconsiderate dog owners unfortunately who give us all a bad name.

Hatemyhusband · 25/08/2020 22:40

My youngest DD has never been nervous of dogs (she’s 4), until recently a large sharpei ran up to her, put its paws on her shoulders, knocked her to the ground and had its face in her face.

I’m very experienced with dogs, I own them and I have trained them, and I grabbed the bloody thing off her immediately, but the damage was done.

Had this dog been aggressive and snapped that would have been her face destroyed as it’s face was on the level with her.

At this point the owner appeared and announced how the dog meant no harm because it “loves children”
Then her mate appeared and said (whilst DD was screaming her head off) “ohhh doesn’t she like dogs then”

The air went pretty blue at this point.

Anyway, end result, my 4 year old is now petrified of dogs bowling up to her or jumping up at her. Four years of no fear undone by one sodding dog.
She didn’t do a thing, this was another “my dog loves kids” incident.

I’m also sick of dog shit everywhere.

All my years of having dogs I’ve always called them back and restrained them when we pass people, but this seems to not be the case very often.

DaughterX · 25/08/2020 22:40

If you are having a picnic and are seated at a picnic table then dogs can't get at the sarnies.

If I had to wait for a picnic table to appear in order to eat while outside with my kids it'd never happen! I live rurally and like to eat a bloody sandwich, on the grass, while out on a walk, in a place where dogs are not allowed to be off leads, where there aren't any picnic tables! anordinarymum am I in the wrong to want to do this then?

NB: I don't ever leave rubbish.
I don't ever leave uneaten food.
I live in the area and respect it.

ComeAlive · 25/08/2020 22:41

^What a bloody ridiculous statement! Did I miss the memo whereby parks are not for people’s enjoyment but for dogs. Seriously?! This attitude is part of the problem. Four legs are not better than two, despite what George Orwell thought!

yolio · 25/08/2020 22:41

TinkersTailor

Thank God I am not alone in thinking the same way as you. Cheers. We people who have been attacked by loose dogs need a voice too.

Deadringer · 25/08/2020 22:42

My sister was knocked over by a friendly dog a few weeks ago. Her knee is shattered and she had to get pins in to mend her fractured shin. She has had weeks of pain, the embarassment of having to be lifted on and off the toilet by her sons, has lost out on wages and has huge medical bills. Her leg will never be the same again. The arsehole dog owner pissed off and is unlikely to be seen again in her area. People are just so fucking selfish.
