Control your fucking dogs

I’m so angry. Yet again someone can’t control their dog and my dc is even more afraid due to some massive dog leaping up at their face and mouthing at them (very young, but big dog).

If they have no recall and keep jumping up at people (and are at the mouthing people stage still) don’t fucking let them be able to get out of control.

Dog ran away from owners, out of the garden and my child ran towards the road. I’m so 😡. Why did I come away feeling like my son was to blame for running and shouting (yes it excites the dog, no I can’t stop him doing it when he’s scared and the dog is chasing him). Yes the dog was playing. No, it makes no difference to my child when the dog can jump higher than he is tall.

Yes constantly owners saying “it’s ok he won’t hurt you” like that is the only factor that matters when you encounter a dog. Is it not ok for a person to want to go for a peaceful walk and not be approached/licked/jumped at by random dogs.

coaleo · 26/08/2020 22:30

Heffalooomia I am trying my hardest to train him to be better. I don't let him off his lead. I know he isn't dangerous, but he isn't trained as well as he should be, but I am trying my hardest to improve xx

coaleo · 26/08/2020 22:39

Thunder skies

Any dog owner should do their best. But they best isn't good enough if anyone is scared of them.
I have similar problem of people allowing their little yappy dogs to run off and wind up other dogs and people but it's ok because they're small. It's not ok at all. Any dog jumping up at a young kid is terrifying. Like if a little kid steps in a dog poo, left irresponsibly. Can potentially cause so much damage to them, I hate it

amicissimma · 26/08/2020 23:13

I'm fine, thanks. Just scraped a bit of skin on part of my bike, probably the pedal or the wheel, and banged my knee somewhere. I stopped so suddenly that I did that undignified lurch forward onto the handlebars.

But very annoyed in a resigned sort of way. Dogs running across the path are too common when off-road cycling round here, so part of the annoyance is not receiving my usual sixth sense signal of what was about to happen.

Heffalooomia · 26/08/2020 23:35

I don't let him off his lead
I apologise for my abrupt post, it's those who insist that their dogs should be allowed to do as they please off lead that I I have difficulty with
Honestly I do like dogs but so many people let their dogs be a nuisance for others, it feels like a way of throwing their weight about and dominating the outdoor space: (
and we are subjected to little plastic bags of dog faeces littering the outdoors:(
Is it any wonder that the tide is turning against dogs, I know it's not the fault of the dogs it's just badly behaved people extending their bad behaviour through their dogs

Heffalooomia · 26/08/2020 23:39

@amicissimma
As a fellow cyclist I do hear you, the dog owners who feel that their dog has right of way, that priority should be given to the whims and wishes of the dog to run hither and thither exploring it's doggy nature

this is human society built and paid for by humans dogs are guests and they should defer to humans
we should not have to defer to dogs 😡

coaleo · 26/08/2020 23:41

Heffalooomia

You are completely right!

And to be honest what you say should be obvious. Any dog owner should feel like you do. Second you say 'don't worry my dog is jumping up at you but he's friendly don't worry' it's wrong. and not ok!!!

OohKittens · 26/08/2020 23:41

This is why I only go to beaches that have complete dog bans in the summer and I never go outside of the ban.

AmberShadesofGold · 27/08/2020 08:19

Incidentally would A dog killing wildlife be classed as out of control?

No. Being out of control is not an offence. Being dangerously out of control is, and to be dangerously out of control another human must be at risk, or think they are at risk. Or another pet/owned animal must be at risk.

Deliberately training/using a controlled dog to kill wildlife is an offence, but a dog that is out of control and killing as a result is not automatically an offence without other factors, such as sheep worrying/killing.

None of which is meant to read as my condoning dogs being out on control and killing wildlife as a result. Or of condoning out of control dogs in any context, no least because an uncontrolled dog is a danger to itself.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/08/2020 08:25

Incidentally would A dog killing wildlife be classed as out of control? Should a dog be very lucky and get a squirrel I'm not sure it would. It happens occasionally in our local dog walking wood. The miscreants bury whatever remains and we all nod wisely and look at our dogs, wondering if they could be so quick!

We don't get incensed as both dog and squirrel where doing what they do naturally and the squirrels usually win, sit chattering/laughing at the hapless dogs. Buit we do all try to distract any dog that looks like it is fixated on a squirrel.

TheoneandObi · 27/08/2020 09:10

In his tiny brain my dog can catch a squirrel. He bounds towards them with gusto. The sad reality (for him) is he doesn't stand a chance.
My mum's cat on the other hand regularly lucks out with baby birds and small mammals :(

Heffalooomia · 27/08/2020 11:07

Cat carnage and it's impact on the bird population is a whole other thread.....

Deathraystare · 27/08/2020 12:58

I don't have kids but can imagine how unpleasant it can be when a dog bounds over to one and licks/mouths it/jumps up at it. I would not like it myself!

I will never understand why people walk dogs on a really really long lead. That is not controlling it.

Ohnonononononono · 27/08/2020 13:53

@IHateCoronavirus- I emailed our wildlife dept to ask whether the dog chasingand killing squirrels in the park is legal (no identifying dog or owner details given); this is the response I got:

*There is probably an offence of failing to keep the dog under proper control, generally these days it is dealt with by the Council dog wardens. There may also be council legislation requiring dogs to be walked on a lead in the park

The offence of hunting with dogs would not be made out as they are walking the dogs off the lead.*

yolio · 01/09/2020 20:02

So we are agreed that out of control dogs should fk right off and we have every right to control them in our presence to protect ourselves if their owners don't or won't.

That's bloody brilliant and rightly so. There is absolutely no excuse anymore for dogs bounding towards people and their masters simpering that they are SO FRIENDLY. Fk off the lot of you. I love dogs at a distance but not in my space.

The minute dog owners have to pay a premium Council Tax Charge will be a good day IMV. Think about that, and why.

I want dog free zones. Right now. Why should everyone be able to walk their hounds anywhere they like and annoy and even hurt people?

Probably should mention the amount of shit and plastic bags in the trees whilst I am at it. Disgusting. And I know not everyone is like that, but in fairness no one knows what a dog off the lead will do. That is the problem.

There have been so many beautiful innocent children killed by them. But I suppose I will be told it is the owner's fault. Nope. Dogs of any breed can turn. Just saying.

Ohnonononononono · 01/09/2020 20:05

Actually I've just got another reply:

If you send me details about who there are I can pay them a visit and remind them about the need for dogs to be on a lead as per the [City] council Public space protection order regarding dogs.

yolio · 01/09/2020 20:23

If a dog bounds towards me it will get a hairspray blast right between the eyes.

Won't kill or hurt him forever, but I refuse to put up with this anymore. My back injury from a bounding dog will be with me forever now, so forgive me if I would like to say my piece about bounding dogs off the lead that owners think are just delightful. Nope.

Molofololo · 02/09/2020 19:01

Yolio totally agree. Increased council tax is a great idea. It drives me mad that all parks, woodland walks, coastal walks, national trusts etc etc are all so dominated by dog walkers. And everyone else is supposed to love their dogs cos they do. We just want somewhere peaceful to walk 😔
