Coronavirus testing service set up by Cardiff University

Cardiff University said students would be invited to take part, but testing would be voluntary.

Swansea University said it had considered it but decided against it on the advice of the local health board.

Swansea University's chief operating officer Andrew Rhodes said it had decided against setting up an in-house testing service after a meeting with Swansea Bay University Health Board.

"They were clear they would absolutely not support the university running their own testing programme, which is why we're not," he said.

"They were clear the tests would not have been part of the test, trace, protect system."

It does start to look like UCU haven't spoken to universities or the health boards. DH university just over the border is doing mainly on-line teaching till January - where they can.

@skeptile, that interview is amazing!

Bollss · 31/08/2020 13:34

My god there's a thread about a teenagers school enforcing masks all day and only taking them off for lunch. Queue posts from the usual suspects whining about how it's clearly a fabulous idea. Kill me fucking now.

I saw that and think I need to stop venturing on other MN threads. It's completely batshit out there.

There's one about telling people off for not keeping more than a 2m distance as well..even though it is not that anymore is it? Not sure anyway people seem to be agreeing..

DominaShantotto · 31/08/2020 13:47

You'd think now we've got deaths down to single digits and zero sometimes it would have calmed down. It's getting worse.

Exactly. I can't see a light at the end of the tunnel any more Sad
justasking111 · 31/08/2020 13:52

There is a heartbreaking one a young mum birth in March, who still will not let grandparents see baby despite the fact her OH is back at work.

WouldBeGood · 31/08/2020 13:54

For all those struggling with masks, I hate them but feel I must comply as no exemption. I have felt really weird though but have now bought, at vast expense, a silk one with adjustable ear things. It’s really light and I can actually breathe through it. Probably murderous, but a bit of a relief to me.

A total lack of care for a teacher whose child has to stay home for weeks from nursery due to tack and trace, meaning the mother can't return to work. And is being asked to pay for the nursery care despite possibly not being paid from her work!

"Of course you will have to pay" etc etc.

Pixel7777 · 31/08/2020 14:01

What planet are some people on

Teachers have been paid throughout full pay.
InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 31/08/2020 14:52

What planet are they on? The “sahm financially secure” one where the “nice little man from Ocado “ does the literal heavy lifting.

Loch was packed today - think the English were making a last bid for freedom. Felt very autumnal and I regret not taking hats for after. Froze my face doing crawl.

I want to believe in the unions (as a concept)... but always bring to mind the “absolute power corrupts absolutely...” quote.

Anyone watch the wire second series with the docks unions in Baltimore? I ended up doing a project involving them and it was actually quite sad. Say for example you had a bright and willing 22 year old with a “can-do” attitude and an eye on the corner office? No can do. SO strict, not even allowed to eg let a windows update auto install. A killer of ambition and ingenuity.

TheOrchidKiller · 31/08/2020 15:05

@ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson no worries! It's ok, I know exactly what & who you meant, & I was trying to back you up with my moaning, but was typing on my phone without my glasses on!

Rishis last day reading of three hour long queues to eat, ffs go tomorrow.
^ exactly! DD's break between lunch & evening services has been cancelled due to high demand. No bookings for tomorrow though.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 31/08/2020 15:07

I have some sympathy for the nursery they'll have fixed costs, large one being wages, and may have had a really bad fiancial year anyway - though might be worth asking for a reducation to see if they could do something.

Same with the calls to reduce university fees - I have huge sympathy with that call but at same time know many universities have same costs as usual large one being staff wages and some are really close to brink financially on top.

Getting caught in track and trace is shit for everyone.

I have family working in care sector who've had very real fear since early days about not being able to work due to it on top of actually getting hold of enough PPE - not having much saved as low wage job - and worrying how they'd pay their bills if it happened.

Pixel7777 · 31/08/2020 15:09

Well, this teacher is saying may not be paid now due to it being childcare related? Anyway, what I mean is it seems where covid is concerned no matter what expense, we are meant to just suck it up...

Pixel7777 · 31/08/2020 15:25

"One of the World Health Organization’s six special envoys on coronavirus has said other countries should emulate Sweden’s virus response as a model for the long-term. Sweden has avoided introducing hard lockdown measures, and seen its case numbers fall in recent months - sparking a global debate about the efficacy of lockdowns"

In the news today.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 31/08/2020 15:38

Is orangeblossom still around these parts? If yes, does your dad have long and wild hair? 😁

Pixel7777 · 31/08/2020 15:54

Hi Insame that is me I just name changed. He doesn't have much hair anymore sadly Wink he tends to wear an old marathon t shirt from years ago...

profpoopsnagle · 31/08/2020 16:11

I have just fired off a letter to my MP about childcare!

I use a wrap around care, that basically has children from 2 neighbouring schools together. It's worked brilliantly for years. For a while it was only open to keyworker children from school A, and then from June to a limited number from school A. The owner is now unable to open for breakfast club for school B children and may not be able to open for after school provision either (although the main issue here is due to school B's headteacher and her being draconian about staggered pick up times).

Schools are back this Thursday FFS. It's not the childcare provider's fault, she's actually been very open that her whole business is at serious risk if she cannot take from both schools, which will have the result of no child care for anyone!

Pixel7777 · 31/08/2020 16:24

It all sounds so chaotic. this track and trace will mean a family...could have

Childcare, work (X 2 possibly) and also school...as well as cafe's, etc all T&Ting various family members and of course parents having to stay home with isolating children and missing work as well

PourMeADrink · 31/08/2020 17:13

I feel for parents as the ones I know are a bit anxious about suddenly finding their children are sent home suddenly when they go back to school.

justasking111 · 31/08/2020 17:30

Speaking to a girl going into year 13, she goes back Thursday her school having different years back in dribs and drabs. They have not been told they need masks though.

Bugger! Was hoping it was crazy hair dude as I see him every time I drive through town. 😁
DominaShantotto · 31/08/2020 17:39

Similar here @profpoopsnagle - we were told before the "summer holiday" (as opposed to the shitfest before the summer holiday of no education) that the wrap-around care provider was opening as normal in September. Friday just gone - less than a week before the start of term... they've pulled out as the reduced numbers (because people's employers are still not letting them back into the office this side of Christmas) make it un-viable. Come January when everyone gets finally allowed back into work - there's going to be no provision around, local childminders full and no one is going to be able to go back to work!

I'm in the position I may well need it after December if I ever get allowed back into the uni campus - won't be childcare there then!
