Agree with BogRollBOGOF. Your uni would be foolish to let you go and not make any accommodation.

As to people giving you side eye, they are unempathetic jerks and can be ignored. Easier said than done as I know to my cost, but remember you are already a better person because you have the ability to empathise with differing circumstances.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 27/08/2020 18:23

Heard on the radio this morning that the guy in NZ has been given a life sentence for the mosque bombings.

Enemy of the anti-D’s said he deserved to be punished by living the rest of his life in silence.

Big shout out to all the mums crying out for just 5 mins p&q.

Where can I buy C4? Asking for a friend.

Proof though, one person’s #bestlife is another’s hell.

Wonder if he’ll get access to the library, his own shower and nice stationery.

PourMeADrink · 27/08/2020 18:43

Agree with others don't give up your course.

Btw I am very conscious that in my mask if anyone wasn't wearing one and saw me they might think I was giving them 'the eye' because actually I am looking out for anyone giving people grief over not wearing a mask.

It's so bloody hard trying to read other people's reactions and lots of people apologise when they have to walk past you and I just want to scream 'it's fine, I'm only bloody wearing one because I can and I have to but I think they are pointless' but you can't tell that from my eyes.

flower11 · 27/08/2020 18:48

My local library is open as usual, well with one way system and masks. I chose some books with dd. The librarian was really nice and chatted to dd.

I'm worried about masks for primary, they mentioned 5- 11 year olds on the news last night and I thought oh no here we go sowing seeds. I thought the news was overly dementory last night, no wonder people are still scared if that is their source of information.

Reedwarbler · 27/08/2020 18:50

I have just had an annoyed 5 minutes when our local news talked about the 'worldwide pandemic'. My dh is very laid back and just ignores me going off on one. Every day I just get more and more cross, especially about grammatical ignorance and lazy journalism. (Why should a tree captured falling down, and causing no damage whatsoever on cctv, count as a bloody news story?) I think I'm going mad!

justasking111 · 27/08/2020 18:55

Some ugliness in Australia, people fed up with the lockdown.

When I was on holiday I did most of the shops, the hotel and all the visitor attractions without a mask. I said I was exempt when I was asked even though that's wrong. I was kind of intrigued as to whether anyone would say anything to be honest. I think I was asked (so I lied) 3 times over the 4 days. It made my holiday much more pleasurable and then I went to wales so I didn't have to do it anyway. I have to wear one locally because I have to wear one at work and I'm worried about being caught out lying. It wouldn't make me look very good.

@Vintagelovingmum In your position I wouldn't wear one when out with DD and if anyone asked I'd say she's partly reliant on lip reading which is true. I honestly doubt anyone would say anything. I didn't notice anyone giving me dirty looks when I didn't do it but I wasn't really looking at other people anyway.

Pixel7777 · 27/08/2020 19:01

Some riots were planned in Germany too- BBC was dismissing it as 'covid deniers and conspiracy theorists' but I read many were normal people at the last one...anyway they were not allowed

Reedwarbler · 27/08/2020 19:03

And the frightening thing is, justasking, is that there are people on mumsnet who would be applauding this kind of police behaviour because they are administering the 'covid rules'. How long will it be before someone is killed or seriously injured for such a stupid reason. Don't think this couldn't happen here.

Pixel7777 · 27/08/2020 19:05

WHO said at one point Sweden would be a good model for coming out of lockdown wonder if we will ever get to something like that or will it go on as it is here

WouldBeGood · 27/08/2020 19:17

@Pixel7777 that’s so interesting! Please let other countries listen.

Pixel7777 · 27/08/2020 19:20

The thing is that Sweden has certain things which help with it's way-low population density, many people live alone apparently and also very sort of good at doing this, wonder if maybe wouldn't work here - not sure

Would be lovely not to have so many stressful rules though, they don't have masks either

WouldBeGood · 27/08/2020 19:26

Given how compliant people have been here I think a consensual approach without the fearmongering might have been better.

PourMeADrink · 27/08/2020 19:30

I wish this had happened rather than using fear and then treating us like children.
TheOrchidKiller · 27/08/2020 19:40

@DominaShantotto oh I hope you don't give up your course! Have been trying to think of ways to make a healthcare clinical placement work for a student who is unable to wear a mask. If there isn't a health setting that won't allow non-mask wearers there must be an educational setting where it would be acceptable?

Libraries here let you in & allow book-touching, but it's track & trace so I can't be bothered to risk it. They sent an email with a list of online adult ed courses- all online, including the basic IT ones.

Went to a cafe today with DH. We were told to wear masks to walk across the empty cafe to our table. We could then remove the mask for the duration of our stay. Other customers came in & we all rolled our eyes at each other. When we left, to make a point DH put his mask on over his eyes & I led him out. No one witnessed this very mature act as the place was empty again & the staff were hiding out the back.

It's just box-ticking for the sake of it. But people think it keeps them safe.

DominaShantotto · 27/08/2020 19:44

@TheOrchidKiller we will get bog all say in placements - they'll even be such arses to give us a shitty travel if we ask and say we have reasons we can't - just to prove that they can.

Picked up something useful whilst on a different thread

Are you in the 99.99% who would recover. Well over that for all but the elderly

TheOrchidKiller · 27/08/2020 20:31

@DominaShantotto It was the same when I was a student many, many years ago. I got all the placements in the back-of-beyond.

I'm really sorry, I feel for you. We are keen to have students at my workplace but the barriers due to covid, PPE & SD are making it so hard in our setting. Neither the universities or the employers seem to be talking to each other about requirements & expectations. We are going to offer some places anyway, but I know that it'll rule out certain students. It really isn't fair.

DominaShantotto · 27/08/2020 20:37

@TheOrchidKiller I've just gone off it yet again on them on twitter - knowing full well it's clearing season and they're a uni that, ahem, takes a lot of students for whom it may not have been choice number 1.

Long reply within minutes suggesting they believe I'm clearly exempt from the campus masks (I'll worry about placement if they ever manage to organise one) but they're going to clarify in the morning.

Anyone would think they were trying to keep themselves looking nice and happy and shiny at the moment!

TheOrchidKiller · 27/08/2020 20:37

@RealityExistsInTheHumanMind
That's an interesting chart.

TheOrchidKiller · 27/08/2020 20:41

@DominaShantotto fingers crossed for you.

RobinHobb · 27/08/2020 20:49

@DominaShantotto

School have just announced their after school care provider has pulled out. There's a stop gap in place till Christmas but no word after that.

I had another awful turn in Tesco trying yet another mask to get around without being judged - got completely overwhelmed by panic and nearly passed out in the chorizo.

Pretty much resigned to giving up my uni degree now. Even if I do get clarification on their facemasks in lectures ruling then I'll have placements to do which at the moment require PPE and then I'll have to get the train everyday and now childcare has collapsed as well. It's just a mess.

Covid has fucked everything. Not even Covid - but all these random rules and interpretations of the rules and social toxicity is what's fucked everything. I'm just a prisoner at home.

This is tough but I hope you don't have to give up. I am in a similar place kind of: I am doing a post grad research degree and my research lab placement got cancelled because of covid. Next term was meant to be lab based and now will probably be online which is absolute shite because watching a video is not the same as being in a lab doing techniques. Exams (which I aced first term) were replaced with courseworks that were much harder to do well in (it's possible to get 99% on mcqs, less so on writing papers) so I felt one of my key strengths was taken away. What's really shit now is I'm going to be doing PhD applications and in the last 5 months when I was supposed to be getting lab experience is a big resounding blank. I'm already not a conventional student and this might completely derail my application. But hey ho: these are small issues compared to covid I realise. Oh and I have no childcare no either. Dd2 nursery has shut down (couldn't cope with the nonsense roolz as only a small business). Dd1 is going to reception but no after school club. Just cancelled. Don't quit; maybe defer? It's shit but you've come so far and you have fantastic grades.
BakewellTarts · 27/08/2020 21:17

@dingit

Whilst I don't condone people going private ( we have healthcare through dh work), it's the start of a slippery slope when people are paying private gps. I'm deeply suspicious that this is what the Tory government want. And where does that leave lower income families that need urgent medical attention at the moment. I can't believe that no one is picking upon this, what ever happened to the opposition party ( the name now escapes me GrinConfused)
This. I have private medical and resources to pay for stuff (dentistry, counselling). I am. Doesn't make it right but I can't wait for the NHS to get its shit together. I am desperately sad for anyone who doesn't have this option. The NHS really don't care if its not Covid and thats not what the NHS should be about.
BakewellTarts · 27/08/2020 21:19

@DominaShantotto agree with RobinHobb defer. Your grades were amazing and it would be a waste if you can't qualify.
