Bloody hell - that HURT! I'm an idiot.

Just burnt the tip of two fingers (one on each hand), whilst making a once in a blue moon fry up for DH and I. Was trying not to break the yolk and got far too close to the oil, which splashed up.

Jesus wept, it was excruciating. I cried, and I haven't done that from pain since I was a kid. Can't take them out of the ice cold bowl of water I've had them in for the past 45 minutes for more than 30 seconds without the searing pain coming back (writing this using the dictation function!).

Shall I just amputate and get it over with (Melodramatic? Me?).

Owowowowow.

Was getting washing in the other night and got smacked in the side of the head with the small hanger thing you peg pants etc on!! Glad it was dark!!

Vinosaurus · 23/08/2020 12:52

Ow Beach, that sounds painful. At least nobody saw :)

I remember from my first aid course a t work...
A burn that hurts is actually a lot better than a burn that doesn't!
As if it does not hurt, you have burned the nerves and done serious damage.

Keep changing your cool water and get some proper medical advice.

(I cried and was sick from the pain recently, when I trapped my finger in a door)

I know that pain OP - as I child I once used my finger to taste caramel that I thought had cooled.

As soon as you can bear to, put a barrier cream and some cling film on top. Don't wrap the cling film tightly as you want the blister to be able to form to its full capacity. Make sure you keep it clean!

Vinosaurus · 23/08/2020 12:58

Thanks for the advice, as soon as I can bear it I'll do the barrier cream/cling film thing.

Yep - I felt like a kid again to be honest, needed my mum to come deal with it (at the ripe of age of 42).

Bloody hell - hot caramel must have been horrific!

Ouch!! The other day I was making a bolognese and whilst it was merrily bubbling away on the hob I was chopping cherry tomatoes to throw in. Didn’t concentrate/wasn’t looking when picking them up off the chopping board to chuck in and instead stuck my fingers into the bubbling bolognese 🙈

Gingaaarghpussy · 23/08/2020 13:28

I tripped over my toe the other day and now have a large bruise on my shoulder and lower arm where I hit a corner wall. I've also tripped over the same toe up a step and ended up with a large bruise and carpet burn on my knee.
My 2nd toe is longer than my big toe, so if I rush, it bends under, et voila, trip hazard,. I now wear slippers all the time.

Fullyhuman · 23/08/2020 13:31

Switch to running water, doesn’t have to be stone cold or fast flowing, but it will remove the heat better. Move a chair to the sink, get comfy, take your time. And check with someone qualified before doing barrier cream/clingfilm.

SinkGirl · 23/08/2020 13:33

A few months ago I was making a fancy meal (rare occurrence). I put the roasting tray i needed on top of the Hob and was chopping potatoes - I noticed the base of the tray was all distorted and weird and I touched it like an absolute idiot, turns out I had left the hob underneath it on. Seriously burnt two finger tips and they are such a painful place to burn due to all the nerve endings. Spent the rest of the afternoon / evening with my fingers in ice water - every time I took it out it was agony. Eventually I took my hand out and suffered through for a few minutes and it started to ease off and then it was fine. Absolutely horrible though, you have my sympathy!

FAQs · 23/08/2020 13:35

If it makes you feel better I’m an idiot who smashed the top digit of my finger with a spring loaded pull back country cattle gate last week. Pain unreal but I was too embarrassed to scream externally, it’s black and red with a weird hard lump on the side which hurts to touch.

I’ve also previously broken my wrist tripping up stairs and broken my a toe twice, I shouldn’t be allowed off the sofa.

Oh and just remembered picked up a soldering gun with my fingers once and still have the scar from that.

Hopefully by the time you’ve read this your pain is subsiding.

jeremypaxo · 23/08/2020 13:35

Ouch, poor you. I did something similar the other night - I picked up a frying pan by the handle after it had been in the oven for 20 minutes. The pain was excruciating, I thought I might have given myself permanent nerve damage.

Keep the cold on it as long as you can. I went to sleep with my hand strapped to a freezer pack (one of those blue plastic things you use to keep food cold in a chiller bag) and when I woke up the next morning it was almost painless. Just a few small blisters but no lasting damage.

SinkGirl · 23/08/2020 13:37

Also, I’m the idiot who almost amputated my arm with a sink and had my eyelid cut open with a fencing sword, so a splash of oil does not sound that idiotic to me 😂

Vinosaurus · 23/08/2020 13:38

Well, I'm clearly not alone! Makes me feel a little less idiotic.

FAQ are you sure you haven't broken it?

That burn gel is amazing send DH out to buy you some.

Twice recently I have done the same but with bubbling water doing poached eggs 🙈 slowed down my typing for the day!

SentientAndCognisant · 23/08/2020 13:42

Ouch
All these misfortune & accidents

RandomMess · 23/08/2020 13:42

@FAQs you really need to get that seen ASAP, fingers are important! Off to A&E!

JadesRollerDisco · 23/08/2020 13:42

I do this every time I fry eggs. I've given up now and either coddle/pouch or scramble in the microwave, or boil them. Unfortunately I also seem to burn myself every time I use the oven somehow.
Always agonising, always heal quickly. When I had second degree burns once it was the opposite

Gingaaarghpussy · 23/08/2020 13:45

If you have dodgy wrists I recommend never using a hot air gun. I lost my grip and ended up with around burn on my arm, went to minor injuries for that one.
Also never stand on a chair in bare feet, to change a lightbulb. Broke my toe doing that, the kids heard the crack from the other end of the room. I was also rather proud that all my swears were kid friendly.

That sounds like a broken finger to me. I'd get yourself off to hospital before you do some permanent damage.
FeltCarrot · 23/08/2020 13:49

A few years ago I splashed my finger with cauliflower cheese sauce. Ran it under the cold tap, wiped the sauce off my finger, only it wasn’t sauce I was wiping away...
Also managed to stub my little toe on my nearly healed fractured foot.

Do NOT do this please. Barrier cream will trap the heat.
Dollywilde · 23/08/2020 13:50

If it makes you feel any better, a few years ago I was making a pre-Xmas Christmas dinner for our Uni friends (14 of us, we take it in turns to host so it’s only once every 7 years!) and I was draining the sprouts. I managed to miss the sink entirely and drained the entire pan of boiling water directly on to my foot...Angry

Amazingly none of them heard me scream as they were all having a great time at the other end of the house, and I was in that manic final 15 mins before plating up, so I knocked back half a bottle of wine straight from the bottle and carried on...

Went to A&E the next morning when I admitted to DH what had happened and got a massive telling off from everyone for not getting it seen to that night. 2nd degree burn/scald, a month in dressings and a warning that I’d been lucky to avoid a more serious injury.

Sprouts are bad, guys Grin

ShipshapeShore · 23/08/2020 13:52

I managed to fire a wooden peg at the bridge of my nose while hanging out the washing. It really hurt and I had a tender little lump!

Pobblebonk · 23/08/2020 13:54

@FAQs, I second the suggestion you get your finger checked out. I ignored my painful and weirdly bent finger for four days before deciding that maybe I should get it checked, and got severely told off about the real risk of losing the use of that finger. It turned out that I had both broken a bone and torn a ligament.
