Bloody hell - that HURT! I'm an idiot.

Just burnt the tip of two fingers (one on each hand), whilst making a once in a blue moon fry up for DH and I. Was trying not to break the yolk and got far too close to the oil, which splashed up.

Jesus wept, it was excruciating. I cried, and I haven't done that from pain since I was a kid. Can't take them out of the ice cold bowl of water I've had them in for the past 45 minutes for more than 30 seconds without the searing pain coming back (writing this using the dictation function!).

Shall I just amputate and get it over with (Melodramatic? Me?).

Owowowowow.

DO NOT put any cream on a burn. Creams contain oil and it makes it worse and can cause an allergic reaction to the cream as the skin is already damaged

DarkDarkNight · 23/08/2020 13:58

Ouch, sounds painful. If it helps I’m an idiot too. My razor dropped off the soap dish while I was having a shower yesterday, I thought it was going to hit my foot so went to catch it. It’s took a little circle of flesh right off the top of my little finger. It bled and bled and bled as those little cuts do.

What is a blue moon fry up?

NHS advice

Cool the burn with cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes – do not use ice, iced water, or any creams or greasy substances like butter.
Cover the burn by placing a layer of cling film over it – a clean plastic bag could also be used for burns on your hand.

Purpledaisychain · 23/08/2020 14:04

Your post made me wince in sympathy. Burns suck. Running cold water is better than a bowl.

gamerchick · 23/08/2020 14:08

Aloe Vera plant (or burn gel if no plant handy) cling film and a plaster. It's been in cold water long enough. Getting the air off it will make you feel more uncomfortable. Do the same tomorrow and tomorrow night take it off overnight.

jessstan2 · 23/08/2020 14:09

Break eggs into a cup before putting in pan.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 23/08/2020 14:10

Was in garage this morning and opened mini fridge door into my thigh. My thigh was in the way but I just kept going with the door and scraping it across my thigh cutting painfully into it. Dh watched and asked why the hell I didn't just move my leg. I don't know!!!! Grin

Motorbike fell on me last weekend when I hit the curb during u turn. Luckily I only twisted my knee and cut it by landing on the road surface. My pride hurt much more.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 23/08/2020 14:11

I have myself a second degree burn on my arm making roast potatoes. Oil in the roasting tray nice and hot, tipped the the potatoes in as I was in a rush and a big splash hit my upper arm.
It was briefly sore and then not so ignored it. Late evening I thought "Why is there a sore spot on my arm?" and took a closer look.
Nice blister there. Which promptly popped and then needed a dry dressing for about three weeks. Too small to bother the nice folks at A&E, unlike the time I managed to sew myself to a college project.

Funguy · 23/08/2020 14:11

why are you typing on Mumsnet?

SentientAndCognisant · 23/08/2020 14:11

No plants,no creams. Plastic food bag (large. Sandwich is food bag) over hand to keep it covered, tape bag at wrist

MaitlandGirl · 23/08/2020 14:12

Oh you poor thing, that sounds horrendously painful. DW was frying some burgers a few years ago and went to drain the fat off the pan into a jar. She thought the jar was tipping (it wasn't) and grabbed it spilling hot oil all over her left hand. 3rd degree burns and a 2am trip to the hospital when she finally relented and let me bundle her into the car.

We always cook burgers in the oven now.

bumpertobumper · 23/08/2020 14:14

Go to a pharmacy, they have good cooling gel antiseptic cream for burns. Really helped when dd got a burn recently.

Really want to hear that story Grin

@Funguy

why are you typing on Mumsnet?
OP says she's using dictation software.

Poor you, OP. I'm still mentally (and physically) scarred after burning my buttock on an oven door 25 years ago. Sounds ridiculous now, but it was colossally painful. Difficult to stick your buttock under the tap, too.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/08/2020 14:20

If you read the OP she's using dictation function.

My worst accident was at the gym. I picked up what I thought was a slam ball, slammed it and followed it down to pick it for the next one. It wasn't a slam ball, it was a medicine ball and it bounced. Straight up into my face. The black eyes and wonky nose were stunning!

SoupDragon · 23/08/2020 14:20

as I child I once used my finger to taste caramel that I thought had cooled.

Yep. Done that.

Except I wasn't a child 🤦🏻‍♀️

FrippEnos · 23/08/2020 14:28

At college a flatmate knocked the iron off the ironing board and I caught it. That was a strange trip to A&E and a bizarre breakage form for the uni.

Vinosaurus · 23/08/2020 14:32

Wow, so many of us! Feel like I'm in some sort of club. I am wincing reading about all your accidents.

OK, so no cream. Pain has subsided enough to take away from the water (switched to running water) so will cling film them.

DH very helpfully said "you know you can put eggs into cold oil and heat it up, don't you?". Well, I do now!

FenellaMaxwell · 23/08/2020 14:33

@FAQs you seriously need to go to A&E or minor injuries - if it’s broken and displaced and you don’t get it seen quickly then they’ll likely have to rebreak it to set it.

WeAllHaveWings · 23/08/2020 14:39

I burnt myself recently and every time I took out of the cold water it was really painful. The skin wasnt broken so tried some aloe Vera gel on it and the relief was instant!

diddl · 23/08/2020 14:43

"you know you can put eggs into cold oil and heat it up, don't you?"

Bleurgh!

I thought that you were supposed to use hot oil?

I've never put anything into cold oil & heated it up!

AngryBananaSund · 23/08/2020 14:44

I fell two meters from a ladder, my left elbow was smashed and most of the tendons in my shoulder (rotator cuff) were ripped out. Four surgeries later I have 80% function in that arm

Lovemusic33 · 23/08/2020 14:45

I have had some pretty bad burn but the worst was when I stupidly lifted the front of the lawn mower into the shed with my hands (from underneath) after mowing the lawn 😐😐, it made me feel sick and the pain lasted for days, spent 2 days with my hands in a bucket of water.

Also burnt my leg badly on my boyfriends motorbike exhausted when I was a teenager.

Burns are the worst.

TroysMammy · 23/08/2020 14:49

Put honey on the burn. I regularly burn fingers and hands and I find it minimises scarring. Unless of course the wrinkles and age spots on my hands disguises the marks.
