What do The Borrowers take in your house?

For me it's superglue. It doesn't matter how much I buy, the tubes just vanish!! What do they whip from you?

(If you don't know who 'The Borrowers' are, a) shame on you and b) Google them!)

Obviously socks. Between the Borrowers and the Tumble Drier Thief I’m lucky to find a pair in the house.

Hair bands & clips.
Charging leads
Scissors (we had four pairs in our ‘bits and bobs’ drawer a few weeks ago, now I can’t find a single one!)

Chemenger · 23/08/2020 11:30

@latticechaos

Tweezers, I buy them constantly. I have no idea why they need them, but they must have eight pairs now. I have bad eyebrows as a result.
Tweezers and hair bobbles used to disappear all the time in this house, but since last year it seems to have stopped. DD2 went to university last year by the way.
roundthemulberrytree · 23/08/2020 11:48

Pens, sellotape, pritt stick.
They clearly have a penchant for stationery.

DameHannahRelf · 23/08/2020 11:51

Socks, usually one of a matching pair (x15).

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/08/2020 11:52

Kitchen scissors, I try to have at least four of them because they need to go in the dishwasher after opening packs of meat etc. I buy a couple of pairs at least every year and yet still have occasions when I reach out to get a pair and they're all gone.

Also rechargeable AA batteries.

Nighttimefreedom · 23/08/2020 11:53

hair clips, hair grips, hair bobbles. I'd love to know what they are using them for!

Nighttimefreedom · 23/08/2020 11:56

@TeddyBeans

DS's first dummy - even when we moved out we didn't find it. He had it in his cot and then suddenly didn't 🤷‍♀️

Single socks mostly and a smoothie cup toy from DS's food truck...

Oh yes dummies, when we were in that phase. And teaspoons.
Jobseeker19 · 23/08/2020 11:58

Spoons
Nail clippers
Hairbands
Hijab pins

And they borrow but return;
Fabric softener
Hair brushes

Raera · 23/08/2020 11:58

A few years ago they borrowed a hamster from a locked cage in an upstairs bedroom.
They returned it a few days later but put it on the top shelf of a cupboard in the kitchen

CurlyhairedAssassin · 23/08/2020 12:02

Timely thread. I washed the kids' duvet covers and pillow cases yesterday. Hung them on the line to dry and then dashed out when it started raining to get them into the dryer to finish them off. I came to put them on the beds last night and there is a pillow case missing. I have looked EVERYWHERE. Under the sofa where they were put after coming out the dryer, between the sofa cushiosn, behind the sofa. I've looked INSIDE the duvet covers. I don't appear to have dropped it as I dashed into the house from the washing line.

All I can think is that it blue off the line in a strong gust of wind, but I can't see it in the neighbours' gardens, and it was pegged on properly anyway. It's not stuck to the inside of the dryer with static......honestly no idea....

CurlyhairedAssassin · 23/08/2020 12:05

Teaspoon losers need to buy just a cheap set of teaspoons from Argos or something. I'm convinced my kids (and maybe even me) have thrown out many absentmindedly, with their yoghurt pot or chocolate mousse pot or something. We now have loads of spare teaspoons.

Athrawes · 23/08/2020 12:08

Lipbalm
Reading glasses
My steel toed boots

SilverOtter · 23/08/2020 12:08

I lost a king size duvet cover to the Borrowers. It was still in its packaging, along with (separately packaged) sheets and pillowcases, and all were in the cardboard box they'd been delivered in along with some tea light holders.

It vanished into thin air and I never found it; not even when we moved out and scoured the entire house to make sure we'd left nothing.

Utterly, utterly bizarre!Confused

bettsbattenburg · 23/08/2020 12:21

We tried the cheap teaspoons, they like those as well.

Face masks disappear here too, I think the Borrowers are also unable to easily go on holiday and so are going camping in the garden using our facemasks as hammocks and socks for sleeping bags.

boltzmannbrains · 23/08/2020 12:26

Pens and hair bands!

Echobelly · 23/08/2020 12:27

Scissors, nail clippers, combs

AlrightBabby · 23/08/2020 12:28

A carved elephant and rhino 🤷‍♀️

Justgivemewine · 23/08/2020 12:32

Pens
Sellotape
Blue tack
Scissors
Glue
Rubbers

I’m seeing a pattern here. I think they’ve opened a stationary store somewhere making a fortune from my pilfered stationery.
I assume they are using the random socks as little carrier bags.

Chemenger · 23/08/2020 12:45

I used to have a blue Ikea bag that I put odd socks in. Last year I binned the whole lot and stopped trying to match socks. They had been accumulating since both my dds (now adults) were babies. Over those decades the number of odd socks which eventually found their partners again must be fewer than 10. The Ikea bag was fairly full, where could that volume of stuff just disappear? I have now joined my dds in wearing odd socks, so liberating. I have about 8 pairs of socks of the same general style, most of them are largely grey, any two will do. I don’t know how many actual pairs survive.

Justkeeprollingalong · 23/08/2020 12:54

My best damask, white table cloth. I have a small cupboard for table linen, (none of which I ever use but that's beside the point) and the damask one has gone missing, although the napkins are still there.
I have turned this house upside down and I can't find it. I've even checked my daughters' houses - but to be frank they never set a table so why would they take it?!
It's not that I want to use it, far too much trouble to wash and iron, but I NEED to know where it is.
I'd not considered the Borrowers, but to be honest surely the napkins would be a more usable size for them.
Maybe they'll get fed up with it filling up their house in the floorboards and bring it back. 🤞🏻

Pickles89 · 23/08/2020 13:17

Either the lid or the tub, never both of Tupperware containers

Yes! Also yes to teaspoons and socks. I reckon the 'sleeping bag' theory is right. That's why it's always odd ones - they like to be unique!

They appear to have swiped DH - he’s been upstairs cogitating over a DIY project for some time now. He’s either fallen asleep or become a victims of the Borrowers Grin

Tape measures - the sort you can use for sewing and things, rather than the metal
DIY ones. I must have bought dozens over the years, I now guard mine jealously, like a dragon with a hoard.

JadesRollerDisco · 23/08/2020 13:35

Single socks
Forks (it always used to be a tea spoons, but these days it's forks)
Face flannels
Tea towels
Nail clippers

JadesRollerDisco · 23/08/2020 13:36

Also children's toothpaste!

Although they have given back most of the tea spoons and tweezers so that we now have a surplus of both. Go figure

Julmust · 23/08/2020 14:10

Tape measures
