HOW the hell have I picked up Laryngitis?

yawnsvillex · 20/08/2020 21:08

How's my luck?!

Don't go to the shops (deliveries as easier don't want to drag DC out) I work from home (always have done) DD is only child and hasn't really been anywhere other than the great outdoors. I'm a single parent (DD no context with Bio Dad)

So how on Earth have I picked up a cold and laryngitis?

We've been washing hands more, sanitising, I wear a mask if I "pop" to the chemist or post office.

I've totally lost my voice and feeling like shit.

No temperature, no cough and no loss of smell or taste.

Have I caught it in the chemist? But I wore a mask!?

Me too! Sympathies. Its crap. Voice keeps cracking on conference calls. How, how did I get this?? There are four of us at home but quite locked down. Haven't been out for weeks. Hope you feel better soon.

ghostmous3 · 21/08/2020 02:12

We are the same. Dont go out much, wash hands, wear a mask in the shops etc. Noone we know has had a cold etc and yet here we are 3 of us have caught a cold!
Dd10 had it first then kindly passed it dd18 and then to me
Defo not corona we tested negative for that.
Only thing I can think of was dd10 went back to socially distanced footie training and a couple of the kids there didnt turn up to training last week as they were ill with colds

QuestionableMouse · 21/08/2020 03:10

So weird because I was going to post something like this.

Had a (mildly) sore throat since Sat. No covid symptoms either! Wish it would go because I'm sick of it now!

Mines a sore throat too! The dds have had proper colds but weirdly only lasted a couple of days and now they're just a little bit snotty but I've just had a sore throat and its not going. So annoying

DeepTreacle · 21/08/2020 03:20

My son managed to catch a cold in the middle of lockdown, no idea where from. But I suppose the thing is that we cannot live (nor should we want to) totally aseptic lives, and also it shows that we should not be taking on blame or shame for catching or transmitting viruses which can happen despite our best efforts to avoid it

yawnsvillex · 21/08/2020 03:41

My throat is bad, I'm awake for 2nd night.

Wishing you all better soon, glad I'm not the only one!

You too.
Nothing worse than a sore throat imo. It's the worst bit of having a cold or laryngitis.

lborgia · 21/08/2020 04:06

I think probably from a shop door, counter, atm machine? It's not very common, but maybe more noticeable because we're not helping the expected sneezing, breathing, coughing on us. Did you have to open the pharmacy door? Did you have to tap in numbers on a card machine? Did you use the chemist's pen to sign anything?

Sorry, it's rubbish I know Flowers

Graphista · 21/08/2020 05:37

While it's possibly caused by an infection it's not necessarily.

Laryngitis merely means the larynx is inflamed and there are non infectious causes of that - overusing voice, dehydration, allergies, stress...

Cheesess · 21/08/2020 06:01

You all need to get tested just in case.

Callardandbowser · 21/08/2020 06:01

We’re the same here. I’ve been woken up by a sore throat. Do viruses lay dormant inside us and then come out when the seasons change?
I get a cold every time the season changes.

Cheesess · 21/08/2020 06:02

And what @Graphista said

Imicola · 21/08/2020 06:16

Most masks don't fully protect you from being infected by things, they are mainly intended to stop the likelihood of passing something on if you talk, cough etc. Then as others have said, easily picked up on hands by touching door handles, money etc and could then be passed on by subsequently touching your face, removing mask etc.

CamelliaCamel · 21/08/2020 06:43

My daughter also had a nasty cold for a couple of weeks. No idea really where it could have come from, food is done online and we haven’t been anywhere except the woods.

Shesapunkpunk · 21/08/2020 06:45

Lower immunity due to lack of exposure to common viruses?

Redcherries · 21/08/2020 07:19

I’m in bed with tonsillitis, had virtually zero sleep and hurt in every piece of my body, even my skin hurts. I’ve been shielded for months, all I can think is that my immune system is even more suppressed because of lack of any real germ contact, dr thinks it’s likely stress and being run down.

QuestionableMouse · 21/08/2020 07:44

Fairly sure I have tonsillitis. Woke up with a raw throat, gunk on my tongue and patches on my tonsils. Meant to be at work today and over the weekend too and I know phoning in sick is going to leave them short but I can hardly speak so I'm going to have to.

Redcherries · 21/08/2020 07:57

@QuestionableMouse I’d phone in sick, I felt ok yesterday other than a weird pressure in my throat, gunk appeared at about 2 with pain, by 8 I felt like I’d been run over with a steamroller. Gunk has covered the entire right hand side tonsil overnight. Plus no one will want to be near you!

DebbieFiderer · 21/08/2020 08:30

Yep, DH and I both have sore throats too, however we have been mixing with lots of people due to work so it's not as surprising, although I had been off work for almost 2 weeks before it started. What is odd is that we both came down with it within 24 hours of each other, which implies we got it from the same source, which is much more unlikely. Just goes to show that people will always get ill no matter how many measures we put in place - you can't eradicate risk, just reduce it as much as possible

Elasticate · 21/08/2020 09:32

Have you been sleeping with the windows open? I can lose my voice if I sleep under an open window.

magicstar1 · 21/08/2020 09:41

My parents have been complaining of sore throats the past week. I’ve got one now too. We’re in Dublin

Ishihtzuknot · 21/08/2020 09:45

I have a cold too but I have rarely left the house since lockdown began. I’m putting it down to everyone being ‘cleaner’ in general which I’m told can affect your immune system and make you more susceptible to minor illnesses. Hope you feel better soon.

RozHuntleysStump · 21/08/2020 09:51

I’ve woken up with a cold too. 😫😫😫

Hope it doesn’t get worse.

ghostmous3 · 21/08/2020 09:52

I've been tested for corona and we were all negative, had the results back 2 days ago so no worries there.

I think we will pick up viruses no matter what precautions we take

I swear I had corona virus in april, 2 people in my work place..a factory ..had it and I was so strict on handwashing, sanitizing my desk, only opening the door with my elbow or tissue. I even stripped off at my front door and put my uniform straight in the wash. Sanitised the shopping and so on. I still got it. After that I totally relaxed and stopped worrying myself sick about the virus. If it wasnt corona..i wasnt tested..it just proved.me.how easy it is to transmit and pick up a virus no matter what you do

nowaitaminute · 21/08/2020 09:54

Probably through stress OP. Hope you feel better soon!
