Anyone fancy a bit of an overhaul before Christmas thread?

Helgathehairy · 20/08/2020 12:46

Please don’t throw me in the stocks for mentioning Christmas!!

During Covid everything has gone to pot a bit - I’ve put on weight, none of my clothes fit right, hair (and eyebrows) desperately need doing and I’m still a bit hesitant to go somewhere to do something so non-essential. Kids have been home constantly and Self-care & housework has become sporadic (at best!). I have elderly family members who are high risk that I’m helping and I’m wondering about exposure and contact and sometimes my mental health takes a bit of a battering due to demands from them. DH is working and we cut back spending well at the start (mostly due to me not going to the shops)but I’ve stated doing a bit more impulse shopping as shops opened and DHs job is connected to the travel industry and isn’t secure so I really need to stop. Next week my kids are back in school and I really want to get things more organised. I like a deadline to keep me on track.

Here’s my thinking - on Sunday it’s 100 days to 1st December. I really want to arrive at the start of December feeling more organised and less sluggish, calmer and just feeling more ME.

Previously Princessing threads have run on the Style & Beauty board but as this is more of a comprehensive overhaul I thought chat might be a better fit??

This is a previous PrIncessing thread for an idea, there have been lots more, including a pandemic one, but this one was started by me. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2458842-Countdown-to-Christmas-princessing

So anyone interested?

(I’m on my phone, which isn’t great for long threads so apologies if it’s a bit disjointed, I just wanted to just get it down.)

I'd like to join please!

My overhaul is:

  1. get underwear that fits (actual separate thread lol)
  2. work with a particular Microsoft product daily to improve my chances of getting a job
  3. begin a new arty hobby
  4. I feel uncomfortable with my weight but instead of talking nastily to myself, I will lovingly aim to be "strong and healthy" by starting running again and returning to youtube yoga (& maybe pilates too!).
  5. keep doing morning pages but maybe 3 small sheets instead of A4.
  6. get a brilliant job
  7. do some basic housework everyday
BaldAndWild · 01/09/2020 19:10

And 8) drink more water
9) get a haircut
10) maybe get my nails done nicely

HereIgoagainagain · 01/09/2020 19:24

Me please !

I am having my haircut tomorrow, but I have nearly 4 stone to lose which is really annoying.
I have started the Liz Earle skin regime which I want to stick to
And I am back at work on Friday which is a bit of a worry.

SquirrelFan · 01/09/2020 19:28

Hi all, everybody seems to be doing really well!
@Friendsoftheearth--luckily I am lazier than you are and two locked doors and a few metres are enough to discourage me. Sadly I'd overlooked some that were in the cupboard...
Goal progress:
Weight loss: not so great! Will improve when I go back to work properly--no time to eat!
Reading: Really well! Finished 2 (admittedly) Young Adult books, but that's extending my attention span and easing me into grown-up reading.
Lists, alcohol, water: nope, nope, nope.
Mani/pedi, mask: Yes! skin may be improving...
Wardrobe: took a bunch of things to a charity shop, had a whole bunch of things dry-cleaned. I'd like to mend some items, but has anyone noticed how hard it is to buy thread? In order to get one small spool of black, I'd need to purchase a whole mending kit with unlikely colours like mint green and coral (at least in my neighbourhood--trying to buy local as much as possible).
Fruit and veg: nope.
Exercise has completely fallen by the wayside. I can see I need to roll out the mini trampoline...
Oh dear.

dutchyoriginal · 01/09/2020 20:47

Day 91:

had fruit as a snack last night, but fancy cookies for coffee this morning because a friend came over. Worked in the garden in the afternoon, so that's both tidier and I got a workout. Also tidied a bit in the living room. Exfoliated my face in the shower and used extra moisturizing cream afterwards.
need to work more on flossing, sleep, finishing my work to do lists

LittleDoritt · 01/09/2020 22:42

Much better day today. Clean house, long walk, no pain. Hopefully the rest of the week follows suit!

LittleDoritt · 01/09/2020 22:46

SquirrelFan my local Tesco has single thread in the hair bobble section (randomly!). Might be worth a try?

Solongtoshort · 01/09/2020 22:50

Day 91 - Well l have done 16800 steps today, yoga, taken my vitamins and ate well.

This could of all been so different as l have had an awful day. I have been shouted at by 3 customers today, 1, because of the price of something, which l have nothing to do with. 2, because a man stood two close to her and he didn’t have a mask on and l didn’t challenge him even though it was on a completely different aisle to where l was stood. 3, a lady hadn’t put the lid on her coffee cup properly ( you know one of those you bring from home) and she had put it in her basket and it had tipped over, yet even though we were cleaning up her mess she wasn’t happy because she had nothing to drink in the hair dressers now. I think l need another goal to get out of retail.

But something nice did happen one of my lovely customers gave me a lovely compliment he said my skin is looking lovely and fresh, it might be personal but l felt like it was a reflection on my water drinking and my skin regime and that little thing that removes the hairs on my chin.

Tomorrow l am off and l am going to sort my cupboard shelf’s l got some shelf organisers from Aldi just by chance, do my week 2 first run and do my washing and household chores. It’s weigh in day tomorrow as well, wish me well. If to bed now.

Night all.

HereIgoagainagain · 02/09/2020 07:24

I am late to the party but I make today day 90 and I am starting my overhaul today.

My aim today is to
Follow skin routine
Eat healthily
10000 steps
Organise my OU stuff as I have a tutorial tonight
Get to the bottom of the washing basket

This is just what I need, and although weight is a big (literally) issue I need to be looking more at the bigger picture. Hopefully once other things are calmer and more sorted then I will feel more in control generally which has got to help long term with the weight.

IpanemaSunshine · 02/09/2020 07:40

Catching up with the thread as I was away for the weekend, where all good ideas on healthy food and alcohol went out the window! Argh!

Much better yesterday, consumed lots of water and vegetables. Cleaned some of the huge and very dirty windows in our kitchen and got through my list of calls.

Today I need to sign up for an online course and decide whether to accept a work contract for January.

IpanemaSunshine · 02/09/2020 07:46

Solongtoshort I don’t understand why some people treat retail workers so badly. Well done for working through such a difficult few months.

Sportycustard · 02/09/2020 07:51

Been a busy few says but progress is:

Reading - going well, getting some time to read most days but still too much time lost on my phone.

Meditation app - hit and miss more work needed.

Fast breakfast - going well except yesterday when I had toast and that derailed me for the day.

Make up - wearing some most days. Avoiding foundation as zoom look is more affected by lipstick and eyeliner and my foundation is ££££ as I am stupidly pale.

Exercise - have been decorating but will book gym slots for next week.

Decorate spare bedroom and office - spare room is clear so that can begin today. Hoping DH can do the ceiling then I can do 1-2 hours most nights and get the rest done.

Water - going well

Do one thing at a time - needs more focus as not doing do well with this

New recipe each week - going well

Bed by 11pm - erm let's not go there

bluetongue · 02/09/2020 09:44

I need this!

After stacking on weight comfort eating I’ve lost nearly a stone. Only 3 kilos left until I hit a healthy BMI.

The next thing I’m looking at is getting my teeth whitened. I’ve never had this done before. I don’t want them blindingly white just closer to white than yellow.

I’m seriously considering going blonde. Think it’s a bit of a midlife crisis thing for me Grin

Then there’s my house. Not only does it need a serious declutter I also sort of got halfway through redecorating and then ran out of money and motivation. I need to finish what I started.

EastofEdna · 02/09/2020 10:27

Day 90

Goal Number One Everything In It's Rightful Place - more done. Reassembled the bed that was scattered around the house and that room is now a bedroom again. Started in my bedroom, did a lot but stopped when realised I was just shifting stuff from one place to another. Will tackle again today.

Goal Number Two Lots of Exercise 6 exercise sessions per week. 1 x gym session yesterday. Bike ride this morning and yoga this evening. Half way there.

Goal Number Three Writing/Translating 15 mins per day; done for today.

Goal Number Four Log all food on MyFitnessPal - want a seven day consecutive stretch. 2 days in, and logging is happening.

Scales not budging since lockdown weight went, but will keep on.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 02/09/2020 15:41

Stalked a bit with the house - need a builder before I can progress.
Am doing well with the diet - haven't given in to my desire for sugary carbs yet
Am feeling okay about things generally - am looking after myself with vitamins etc.

beautifulshoes · 02/09/2020 17:05

I've had a couple of days of migraine coming and going so I haven't been at my most productive but could have been worse.
I've been settling DC in school and preschool which has gone well. Also today I
Booked a couple of supermarket deliveries ✅
Cleared out one cupboard in the kitchen ✅

SydneyCarton · 02/09/2020 17:50

Ticked off organising two kitchen cabinets for the start of my 30 day decluttering challenge yesterday. Today was “organise spices and get rid of anything out of date”. Seems a bit odd to devote a whole task just to spices, but hey, it was easy and it’s another thing done. Five jars binned (one dating back to 2012 😱) and remaining ones neatly in a basket on the shelf.

Come down with a bit of a cold today so not much else done tidying wise, but am on track with self care stuff like water, vitamins, 16:8, skincare routine etc so all good Smile

Snipples · 02/09/2020 19:10

Day 90 - walked loads today and picked up some great bargains for the kitchen (nice bowls to use for entertaining etc - obvs when we can!). Also got some great deals on some lovely wooden toys for DD1 for Christmas.

Did my tabata video in afternoon and a bit more decluttering of drawers downstairs. Place is starting to take shape a bit.

Allmyfavouritepeople · 02/09/2020 19:43

I think everyone should do at least one month of retail/customer service work solong as a kind of national service. The world would be a lot nicer if so.

Day 90:
Fasted again until 12 even in the face of biscuits so very pleased.
Not used to being home so early so I've managed to make a head start on the spare room tonight. Very happy. Feel a little bloated despite fasting so not sure what the scales will say on Friday.

BaldAndWild · 02/09/2020 21:23

Walked about 3 miles (half a mile with weights aka 4 pint milk cartons) & am so unused to the exercise that I have shinsplints!
Had fruit and veg, fish and eggs, drank lots of tea.
Did not find my brilliant job yet, but was gainfully engaged in doing a tax return, and panicking over an unpaid bill which turned out to have been paid after all.
Going to bed in the next 15 minutes.

Solongtoshort · 02/09/2020 22:47

Day 90- completed week 2 run one, sent my boy back to school and spent most of my day worrying about him had a tidy round the house just general stuff. Painted my nails and had a face pack.

Thank you @allmyfavoritepeople l do think some people are cut out for it and @lmpanemasunshine. Luckily the good customer’s far out way the bad.

HereIgoagainagain · 03/09/2020 08:09

Things that went well yesterday
Organising OU stuff
Healthy eating
Water consumption

What needs to improve today
More steps
skin care
Will paint my nails
I am going to sort out an outfit that doesn't make me miserable for work tomorrow.

I have also come out with a stinky cold which is annoying. This is after saying last week how I didn't think we would see as many this year because of social distancing and all the hand washing.
For those of you who take vitamins do you really feel a difference ? I am thinking of just taking a multivitamin.

Karcheer · 03/09/2020 09:55

Ive been so rubbish at this, the thread even fell off my list!

Anyway NEED to gt back on it, starting again today.

Bad start coffee and toast with marmalade for breakfast...

SydneyCarton · 03/09/2020 10:13

HereIgo I came down with a runny nose and sneezing yesterday and it feels like ages since I even had a cold what with lockdown and social distancing and extra hand washing. Hope it passes soon. I take a multivitamin and honestly can’t really tell much, but I have low iron levels and I know it keeps them topped up.

Tried to stick to 16:8 yesterday and more or less succeeded, but did eat quite a bit of junky stuff which probably outweighed the benefits of the fast. I suppose it would have been worse without a fasted breakfast though.

Day 89 (?); Today and tomorrow my decluttering challenges are to do the fridge and the freezer, so slowly working through those. Will cook bolognese later for dinner which has already got rid of a frozen pack of mince 👍🏻 Also ordered some more uniform bits for DD1 who has grown more than I thought Blush

Friendsoftheearth · 03/09/2020 11:05

I have been away for a few days, and ate healthily - too advantage of a good wine list though but was back on the lemonade last night and salads.

So today -

unpacking and finishing laundry
Put together autumn wardrobe as the weather has changed and I am still lacking some basics
Beautiful lingerie is on the cards, research, very much sick of being Bridget bloody Jones on a bad day!
Healthy eating today is going okay no time to eat!

Need the dc to go back to school before I can do anything serious on the exercise front.
