Art GCSE really downgraded but they never looked at the portfolio. What to do next?

My DD was looking at a 7 or 8 in Art, she has been awarded a 5. Its her best subject and she has a great talent and was predicted a much higher mark. When school shut down they didn't request any submissions of work to grade it. 2 years of work in a portfolio for nothing. It's still sat at home getting dusty.

Im so gutted for her. I dont even know what to do with this? Can we appeal?

This happened to my son on his A level DT. A grade to a C grade and his assignment sits in the garage having not been looked at by the school.

They haven't been given downgraded grades. So that will be the mark the school awarded her (they got whichever grade was highest, CAG or the algorithm one). I would speak to the school

DS got lower GCSE grades than he anticipated (some even lower than his mocks in a few subjects). He has had an email from one teacher and she said she didn’t submit that grade for him and she’s disappointed by it too. It’s awful when the kids worked so hard and you see on fb about kids from deprived schools who are over the moon about their results.

How is this relevant in the slightest to OP?

OP predicted grades are not the same as the CAG result awarded by the teacher. I would speak to her school/teacher and check the teacher defo put a grade 5 and ask for the reasoning behind this grade.

Sorry this has really pissed me off. Kids in deprived schools also work hard... in fact lots of them work a lot harder in much harder home conditions, with limited support. what a shitty attitude to have.

GCSEs haven't been downgraded. Her grade will be the CAG submitted by the school (unless it has been increased by the algorithm). You need to speak to school and clarify how the grade was assessed. Is it possible that she missed a deadline to submit her sketchbooks / portfolio? Did she do a mock before lockdown?

You can talk to the school if you feel they’ve been biased it made a mistake but I wouldn’t hold out much hope. The grade used would have either been the one the school gave or the Ofqual one if higher. They’d been teaching her for the best part of two years so I assume she maybe isn’t as good as you think?

Yes they haven't given kids from deprived schools higher grades but fair individually assesed grades rather than downgraded results based on the schools prior performance.
Having said that it does sound unfair that OPs dd didn't get her portfolio taken into account and I would talk to get teacher as a first step.

I'm sorry but your son has been given the grades that his teachers felt he would achieve. It's possible that the grade submitted by his individual teacher was moderated down by the senior leadership team to ensure consistency across the school. You need to take it up with the school and worry a little less about the 'deprived' kids

@Tallandall nobody's GCSEs have been downgraded. He will have been awarded the CAG or a higher one. You need to speak to the school.
It has nothing to do deprived schools. At all.

We asked to submit the year 11 portfolio in March but the school said they didn’t want them.
She got a 7 in her mock in January.

@ihatethecold the mock grade is a red herring. The important one is the CAG. It is possible there was an error entering it. You need to ask the school. GCSE students were given the highest out of CAG or algorithm mark. It would be odd to award less than the mock for the CAG without a 'reason'. This is why you should contact the school. Mock grades aren't reported to anyone other than parents.

Op does it matter? Genuine question, is it stopping your dd from taking the next steps that she wants?

It sounds like a difficult situation from what other posters have said in terms of appeals.

Are you implying that children from 'deprived schools' haven't worked hard? Or that they don't deserve to be happy with their grades and have somehow short changed your child? You sound like a horrible, entitled snob.

Op no one here can tell. You must know she wasn’t downgraded, this is the mark the school allocated to her. Ask them.

My dds portfolio is at home as she's been finishing work. Her coursework had already been marked up until around January as her teacher told her what grade she was currently at so she could apply to sixth form.

This is not a down grade. It will be the grade the centre (Ie her school) awarded her.
I’d check with school that this is not a clerical error. That does occasionally happen.

Grades from teachers got internally moderated before being submitted so hers wouldn’t have been the final decision. It’s really inappropriate of her to be engaging in discussion like that.
