Art GCSE really downgraded but they never looked at the portfolio. What to do next?

My DD was looking at a 7 or 8 in Art, she has been awarded a 5. Its her best subject and she has a great talent and was predicted a much higher mark. When school shut down they didn't request any submissions of work to grade it. 2 years of work in a portfolio for nothing. It's still sat at home getting dusty.

Im so gutted for her. I dont even know what to do with this? Can we appeal?

@ihatethecold

It doesn't matter how good her art is, the grading is on the written coursework about technique, reasonings, art history ect

so you can be dire at the skill but be very good at writing up about the work. Thats what gets you the higher mark?

Why predict 7's and 8's?

No. Both count but they will affect each other.

My ds did drama. He did technical theatre side of it and is very good at creating effects and moods and can programme a whole musical into the computer and run lights.
He's shit at English and analysing. He's awful at justifying why and who inspired him etc.

His grade (5) reflected a balance of his strengths and weaknesses.

A student who was great at analysing but less so at the practical would also come out at 5/6.

Students need to be strong in both to be moving to the 7+ grades.

@0DimSumMum0

To be honest I'm quite surprised that her portfolio wasn't submitted. My son did an art subject, 50% of the final grade was on his portfolio work and the other 50% on his final project. Even though they were not at school they continued to work to all of the original deadlines and all boards were sent off to the examining board for external marking as they would have if they were taking the exams. I think something has gone very wrong. I would be emailing the teacher.
If the school did send work to the exam board, nothing would have been done with it by them. No coursework was required or used at all at exam board level this summer except by the IB.

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross: @0DimSumMum0 has clarified that she’s describing arrangements for IGCSE.

Thank you @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross. I know it was sent as the board requested it but good to know that they probably didn't even look at it. Thank you!

Paranoidmarvin · 21/08/2020 13:17

How did it go with the school?

I know - we teach IGCSE at the school I work at and the coursework wasn't looked at by either of the IGCSE providers we use, and they are the two biggest exam boards to offer it.

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross It makes sense really. Like @ihatethecold it was my sons best subject too so I was quite interested. Do let us know how you got on.

Pretty much. I got a b in a level art because my writing and critical thinking was spot on . I am shit at art
LM2098 · 22/08/2020 08:42

@ihatethecold I had a friend who was incredibly average at art, she was OK at a few different modules like pottery but her painting and drawing bless her was bad, but because she explained technique, influence ect well in her coursework she got a B.

Thanks. This thread has helped me understand the scoring system for grades better.

I’ll probably always feel she was robbed!! 😭
