What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

OK I will add some further advice when I've had more time to think of the answer to my own question but one that majorly sticks in my mind is a very simple one.

I was watching a video of a couple who had been married for 70 years, the interviewer asked the couple what their tips were for staying in a happy marriage for so long. The old lady smiled and said it was simple, they have spent their entire relationship being 'nice' to each other. I'm not sure why its stuck with me so much, it seems simple, straightforward advice but even when I have bad (hormonal!) days I always ensure that I am kind and respectful to my partner. I was never nasty of course but its something at the forefront of my mind! We have been together 5 years and I can honestly say we are very happy together! He is equally as kind and nice to me and I hope we stay together as long as the couple above!

So what's yours? It can be anything!!!

Don't focus on the target, focus on your action.

A lost opportunity is like a spent arrow - it never comes back.

Not invariably true, but often enough, so seize the day...

I also like to use pareto but its not really a saying.....80% of result comes from 20% of the effort

"Keep your head up even when your arse is trailing the ground". My lovely grandmother always told me that. In other words no matter how bad life is, keep going

@DogsandBoysmeanMud

How to change a mobile babies nappy standing up!! Best advice EVER!! Even 17yrs later.

My mum taught me how to change on my knee, I still do it now even with a stroppy toddler.

No need for a changing table and I can change him anywhere I can sit, great for when you are out and about :-)

My family wasn't / isn't one for advice - but in the seventies a great aunt allowed out from the GDR for a funeral (OAP):
"Prokup, learn a much as you can!"

"You can't take anyone up the ladder with you, they will always drag you down, in the end."

Advice I wish I had taken when I was so sure I could "fix" my ExH but actually, he just dragged me into his pit of despair with him. It took a long time to climb back out.

Blimey yes that's so true - and so many of us have probably found that out!

You can never make the same mistake twice. The first time it’s a mistake, the second time it’s a choice.

He says he meant well but that's no fucking use to me. I'm still fucked over by it all.

Not technically a saying. It is something my friend said about a controlling boyfriend she chucked and that we her mates have taken as something of a mantra ever since.

You make your own luck. (Not always true, but you have have some control over where you are and when).

Always leave a party while you are still having fun.

You are the master of your universe and your mum can't see you now. (Meaning, there are no rules. If you are a grown up in your own house you make the decisions. My mum may not approve of eating on the sofa but she isn't here to see ).

Sleep more.

Be proud of your family and don't badmouth them.

Make yourself proud. Do the right thing.

Always go for the man loved by (and who likes and is kind to) small children and animals.
Never marry anyone you couldn’t trust to behave decently in all circumstances / never marry a man you wouldn’t like to be divorced from!

I don’t approve of that one but I see what she means...
