How much weight do you have to lose to drop a dress size?

.. And how long did it take you? I'm currently a 14,and I'd like to be a 10 again. To do so, I'll have to lose about three and a half stone.

I feel this is quite a lot - a girl at work who is roughly my size was saying she drops a dress size for every 10lbs she loses!

It depends on your height. In general, the taller you are, the more weight you need to lose to go down a size.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 18/08/2020 11:18

I’d say 10lbs. And I’m tall

Thanksitsgotpockets · 18/08/2020 11:20

I'm 5ft 4 about I'm a large 10 at 9 stone 10. At 9 stone 4 I'd be an 8-10. So about 7/8 lb

I lost six stone through Slimming World over a period of nine months, but only dropped three dress sizes.

Honestly it completely depends on a) the dress and b) the shape of your particular body. I've been 10stone and nearly 12 stone and still fit into size 10 dresses from some labels and size 12 dresses from others. In some brands/cuts I was a size 14 because of my boobs, in others a size 10 because I have smaller hips/bum.

The only thing that really works to see if your body is changing is the scales and a tape measure, and/or one non-stretchy piece of clothing that you try on once a week and see if you're any closer to getting it up over your thighs/buttoning across the front/raising your arms without bursting out the back.

A couple of weeks ago I hit exactly 12 stone - my heaviest non-pregnant weight. All my size 12 clothes from the beginning of lockdown when I was 10st10 still fit fine, just a little tighter round the waist, thighs and across my back and upper arms. I'm now aiming for 9st4 to be in the middle of the "healthy" BMI range but I bet I'll still be wearing some of my size 12 dresses!

I've lost almost 4 stone recently and have dropped from a 20-22 to a 16.

Candyflosscookie · 18/08/2020 11:24

Sizes "widen" as they go up. So the differences in cm between say an 8 to a 10, is less than the differences between a 20 to a 22. It takes more to drop a bigger size.

I've lost 2 stone and only gone from a 16 to a 14. But I know (from previous experience) that only one more stone and I'll be back in my 12 jeans again. I'm fairly tall.

monkeytennis97 · 18/08/2020 11:25

I'd say for me a dress size is roughly every 20lbs.

IamTomHanks · 18/08/2020 11:26

No need to lose weight at all, just try shopping at a different store. I can change 2 to 3 dress sizes depending on the shop.

CaptainBrickbeard · 18/08/2020 11:27

I’ve lost three and a half stone since 2nd January and re-bought my favourite dress from last autumn so I can wear it again. Last November I needed a size 20, now I’m in a size 14. I’m 5’6”. So I’d say it probably does correlate for me as a stone per dress size. Tbh though, I always have a range of sizes in my wardrobe depending on style and brand!

LesLavandes · 18/08/2020 11:29

1 stone

Pertella · 18/08/2020 11:31

I'm 5'5" and in the low 11 stone range and can fit into a size 12 top ok and into 14/16 in trousers.

At 14 stone I was 16-18 in tops and 18-20 in trousers.

Ploughingthrough · 18/08/2020 11:42

I went from a 16 to a 10 losing 2 stone 10lb. I'm 5 foot 6. I'll let you do the maths!

RosaBaby2 · 18/08/2020 11:43

It genuinely took me around 3.5 stone to drop a size Sad

MondeoFan · 18/08/2020 11:48

I think 1 stone more or less. I was a size 14 and lost 2 stone so was a size10 - 12 I've put 2.5 stone back on and now a 14-16. I'm going to try and lose 1 stone so I can be a comfortable size 14

RosaBaby2 · 18/08/2020 11:49

Sorry should add I'm 5ft3 and was about 17 stone

Ginkypig · 18/08/2020 11:49

It depends how big i am once I'm nearly at the healthy weight it takes less weight to dress size.

last time I lost weight I lost 2 stone before I could get down to the next size but I lost 4 stone in total and went down 3 dress sizes.

I'm tall though. My sister lost the same in weight but is 3 inches shorter than me and went down from a 16 to an 8.

To be honest it's harder now to use dress size as they vary so wildly in shops. You can be a ten in one shop but a 14 in another! I on the same day bought a 16 from a shop and needed a 22 in another and I have never ever needed a 22 ever!

It's much easier to gauge by measuring your waist, your thigh and the top of your arm. It shows the inches you have lost and with the waist especially you can see if you are at the healthy measurements.

HattieMid2 · 18/08/2020 11:54

About a stone.
Recently lost 3 stone and have gone from size 20 to size 14.
I think I'm extra dense though, I'm 5'4 and 14 stone, fit comfortably into size 14 jeans. I'm aiming for a healthy BMI so still about 4 stone away!

CorianderLord · 18/08/2020 11:54

I went from a 12 to a 6 with a 2st loss. (Am back at a 10 now oops)

makingmyway10 · 18/08/2020 12:13

I am not small, size 18 I am also short. If I lost a stone and a half I would drop a dress size. I lost 5 stone six years ago and went from a Size 20/22 to a size 14. So for me 5 stone was 3/4 dress sizes. I have put nearly all the weight back on In the last three years though . I have just started to try and lose some again but I now have a long term health condition that requires meds including steroids and I also am well into peri menopause so a lot harder now! However I am also a lot happier now so swings and roundabouts Smile

Doje · 18/08/2020 12:17

I lost 2 stone and dropped from a 12/14 to a 10/12.

Doje · 18/08/2020 12:17

Sorry, it took me about 8 months.

QueenCT · 18/08/2020 12:18

2 stone for a dress size for me

wendz86 · 18/08/2020 12:19

Dress prob around half a stone 3/4 of a stone. Jean size i'd need to lose quite a bit. I was a stone and a half lighter than I am previously and still in same size jeans. My hips/legs are my widest part.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 18/08/2020 12:20

I'm 5'9, when I weighed 12.5 stone, I was a 14/16.

I dropped to 10.11 stone & was wearing 10/12
