Shite holiday weather incoming. So disappointed.

Poor WFH DH and uni year-in-industry DS1. Also WFH. And a drifting off-to-uni DS2.

Just, sadly, sorting out our holiday packing, now; packed yesterday in anticipation of a sunny holiday.

Lyme Regis, cottage (£850..). So sad to be taking so much 'sun' related stuff out, as it's pointless given that we have thick cloud, then an 'unexpected deep Atlantic Low' on Tuesday/Weds. Rain for the rest of the week.

I know it can't be helped but I'm so disappointed for everyone, as we were banking on this 'amazing summer' lasting for us. But there it is.

I know others are suffering far worse. But it looked so hopeful, so positive! I was getting my hopes up that we'd have a lovely, bright, sunny, life-affirming break from WFH 4 walls!

But nope.

I'm not looking for responses, I'm just so sorry for my family who have worked so hard, for so long - with this little chink of 'yay!

But the weather will be nasty.

You are going on holiday which is more than other people will do.

Areyouquitesure · 15/08/2020 00:29

It will be much better than you think as it's 21 all week with just sporadic showers - they pass over quick there

Fossil hunting on the beach is great fun, cafes are lovely. And it's a change of scene Thanks

Flaxmeadow · 15/08/2020 00:34

Which forecast are you looking at?

The Met Office is giving sunny intervals and just scattered showers, with a temperature of 18 Celsius. It isn't that bad

Floralnomad · 15/08/2020 00:34

Bit silly to expect good weather in mid August in this country as in the last few years August has been pretty crap , May and June are much more reliable weather wise . Anyway as a pp said at least it’s a change of scenery .

INeedNewShoes · 15/08/2020 00:36

I've had a look at the forecast. Honestly, all is not lost. There should be plenty of dry, warm weather for outside activities in the time you're away.

Swelteringmeltering · 15/08/2020 00:36

Lyme Regis is wonderful. Take a Cape and stand mournfully looking out to sea on the cobb😁, relish the weather.

Coastal weather is always unpredictable.

MazDazzle · 15/08/2020 00:38

We booked a week away and the forecast was grim. In reality, the showers passed and we even got some spells of sunshine.

A few years ago we bought a pop up gazebo (we usually use it without the sides, though you can attach them if need be) and took it with us on holiday. It makes such a huge difference. It goes up like an umbrella.

We can sit out in the garden even when it rains. It fits in the boot of the car and it easy to pop up, so we’ve even taken it to the beach.

Take waterproofs, flasks of cocoa, plenty of alcohol if that’s your thing, good food... you can still have a good time.

MuseumOfYou · 15/08/2020 00:39

Lyme Regis is so lovely, and it's a shame that the weather isn't all you want it to be. Plan accordingly, take anoraks and just enjoy the time together and a change of scenery and pace.

TW2013 · 15/08/2020 00:44

There are chances of rain but not raining all the time on MET office predictions. Can you maybe plan some watersports- wind surfing, snorkeling etc. which are less weather dependent? Not the same as just lazing on a beach but at those ages it shouldn't be quite as hard to find something to do which is less weather dependent.

TW2013 · 15/08/2020 00:45

Well obviously wind surfing is wind dependent but not precipitation dependent.

SmileTolerantly · 15/08/2020 00:47

You’ll be fine. The forecast is for some rain most day but by no means all the time Just keep your bag packed and your plans flexible.

HopelessSemantics · 15/08/2020 00:48

I like a rainy holiday. It's nice to lie in bed listening to the rain. It's nice to walk on the beach under an umbrella when no one else is there.

Take lots of board games and books.

Most people in the world work hard every day but not all of them get a holiday.

Miljea · 15/08/2020 00:50

Thank you, everyone. I recognise I'm being ridiculous. But I so wanted nice weather, in August on the Dorset Coast 😂

See, unbelievably shite weather, year after year, camping drove us to the 'villa-with-a-pool-in-Spain'.

We arrived, in '04 with DSs 2 and 4, from Queensland. We camped for holidays. But year after year after year, school summer holidays (England) became worse and worse.

It culminated in that year, on Dartmoor where it deluged all week. Trying to recall- 2010? 2012? And we went 'this is such a precious week, 1/52 for us to enjoy as a family; why do we keep doing this?' - so we stopped. Flybe to Spain to a villa-with-pool there on in. Airport (now gone) 15 mins from home!

God. What great holidays, Because The Sun Shone.

I feel your pain. I've had one week off all year (in July - when we should have been in Greece). I planned to sit in the garden and pretend but it pissed down for the whole week. I was absolutely gutted. Especially as the weather either side of that week has been so glorious.

Hopefully it will be better than the forecast Smile

Miljea · 15/08/2020 00:54

Or perhaps, more accurately, we knew the Sun Would Shine.

Sorry, I know I'm whining. But I'm disappointed. I so wanted 'a bit of a beach holiday (with sunshine)' this year. And it was looking pretty likely but- no.

TheChosenTwo · 15/08/2020 01:14

We went there (well, Seaton but spent a couple of days in Lyme because we do like it) for the last week of July and came home THE DAY the weather turned beautiful.
We had our coats and jeans, a couple of sunny nice days but pretty much cooler chilly weather.
It’s the reason we would never usually holiday in the U.K.
we do appreciate that we were lucky to get away, it was nice and we went with my brother and his family too which we would never have done otherwise so that was lovely.
But yeah, I look forward to my holiday away because it’s a change of scenery and a break from the norm, same as most people who take holidays.
It’s not quite as fun having to pack wellies in the summer!!
Fingers crossed you get a little break in the weather Flowers

Pixxie7 · 15/08/2020 01:19

Sorry the weather has changed,, but admit I am glad I can’t stand the humidity.

Hairthrowaway · 15/08/2020 01:22

I think after the awful year we’ve all collectively had, you’ll enjoy your holiday regardless of the weather

Feelingpoorlysick · 15/08/2020 01:34

I can understand your disappointment but just try to make the best of it.

I would do anything for a change of scenery right now.

mrbob · 15/08/2020 01:38

Come back to Australia 😉

ReefTeeth · 15/08/2020 01:44

My one week in Spain every year got me through the British weather the other 51 weeks, so you totally have my sympathies.

I'm back in Australia now and still miss my week in Spain even though our summers are good.

Thatisme · 15/08/2020 01:52

It's called British summer, that's why in normal times people fly to the Med. Sorry, can't say anything more helpful 😖

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 15/08/2020 02:15

You moved the wrong way :D I moved from Ireland to Australia in 2013 and thank god for it every day. :D Lyme Regis is lovely though, I do love a British seaside resort. I hope the sun comes out for you!

Ilovesausages · 15/08/2020 02:29

I’m sure you will have a nice time anyway. We were away last week and had a couple of days of heavy rain but we just stayed in and were totally lazy and it was actually really nice.

Even a change of scene and getting away from home is a nice break.

Hyperfish101 · 15/08/2020 02:30

It’s the UK, weather always unpredictable. You’ll still have fun. Fresh air and the sea is always good, whatever the weather.
