Shite holiday weather incoming. So disappointed.

Poor WFH DH and uni year-in-industry DS1. Also WFH. And a drifting off-to-uni DS2.

Just, sadly, sorting out our holiday packing, now; packed yesterday in anticipation of a sunny holiday.

Lyme Regis, cottage (£850..). So sad to be taking so much 'sun' related stuff out, as it's pointless given that we have thick cloud, then an 'unexpected deep Atlantic Low' on Tuesday/Weds. Rain for the rest of the week.

I know it can't be helped but I'm so disappointed for everyone, as we were banking on this 'amazing summer' lasting for us. But there it is.

I know others are suffering far worse. But it looked so hopeful, so positive! I was getting my hopes up that we'd have a lovely, bright, sunny, life-affirming break from WFH 4 walls!

But nope.

I'm not looking for responses, I'm just so sorry for my family who have worked so hard, for so long - with this little chink of 'yay!

But the weather will be nasty.

Not sure where you live that you talk about the "amazing summer" we have had.

I live in the Midlands and we have definitely not had an amazing summer. Barely a day has gone by without rain and we have had a lot of quite chilly days.

The forecast is often very wrong. Last year we went to Scarborough for a week and the forecast before we went was rain every single day. We had lovely weather, really sunny and warm and no rain (except one lot over night) until the last day.

Maybe amazing “summer” is misleading, but spring was fantastic - April & May were pretty much wall to wall sunshine, and I’m in LANCASHIRE! Grin

June and July were cooler and wetter up here, it’s true, but friends in Lincs/Essex/London/Kent/Sussex/Dorset have sweltered. Then recently when it was in the 30s down there it was 10 degrees cooler up here.

So I’m not complaining Smile Compared with other years it’s been lovely.

@BogRollBOGOF

Sorry it’s not as good as you’d hoped.
£100 for a pass?
They know how to make a profit don’t they?
You’re at Weymouth aren’t you?
Can’t you go for dips in the sea or is the weather shite.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/08/2020 22:26

We've had a good one with the weather today. Other than tomorrow, the forecasts have perked up. My optomism levels have risen Smile

At the point that we booked, the accommodation only package was quite decent, but doesn't cover activities as it was still unclear what they would be able to offer and when. Normally it would be a lumped in inclusive cost and we wouldn't think about the value of what we would/ wouldn't do.

KitKat1985 · 18/08/2020 22:42

I hope you are having a good time regardless OP.

I do feel for you. We were originally due to go to Majorca this coming Monday (booked all the way in November pre-covid disaster) but for obvious reasons it was cancelled a few weeks ago. Decided since we had the time off work we would book a UK break instead rather than sit at home and mope. Therefore now due to go to Great Yarmouth on Monday. Weather forecast is currently to be overcast and for rain EVERY BLOODY DAY. I mean it's bloody August. Why must it rain every day? I can cope with the odd rainy day but every pissing day?!?

We've just decided to pack raincoats and make the most of it. Not much else we can do. And I'm very aware that there are people who have had to deal with a lot worse this year than we have. But me and DH are both NHS staff who have been working really hard these past few months and we were really just looking forward to a nice family holiday. But he crappy weather forecast has just added that 'bit of salt to the wound' that we're not going to be on a beautiful Spanish island playing with the kids on the beach in 30c like we planned.

Purpleice · 18/08/2020 22:50

I was told by a meteorologist that the Met Office forecast is the most accurate and that it’s not possible to forecast the weather with all that much certainty for more than 24 hours ahead.

whenwillthemadnessend · 18/08/2020 23:06

Sorry but it's ridiculous to think it's even remotely likely to get a proper beach holiday in uk. It's a rare thing!!

I love a british break but I always get at least two days rain. I consider that a win.

And in late August even less likely. First two weeks of July tend to be the best weather over the school holidays (occasionally early August too.)

supersonicginandtonic · 18/08/2020 23:07

My sister should be in the Caribbean on her honeymoon, she's in Manchester instead. She keeps sending me pictures of herself and her husband sat in their swimming clothes having wine in the garden under an umbrella or reading sat next to a paddling pool. All in the rain. They are determined to spend the week the same way they would have done abroad.

Cybercubed · 18/08/2020 23:07

I've enjoyed the welcoming rain. Can't stand the humidity, I walk to the shop and back and my shirt is soaking by the time I get home.

Time2change2 · 18/08/2020 23:15

Some places in England have had an absolutely amazing summer. I live in the SE and bar the odd week or 2 it has been amazing weather since March. Never known a spring / summer like it and I am in my 40’s. We’ve had the paddling pool / water toys out more than any other years. I’ve been to the beach dozens of times (usually only go 3-4 times) I’ve swam in the UK sea many times this year where I don’t usually. Been many many evenings warm enough to sit out in short and T-shirt past midnight. Been out almost every morning at 8am in the sunshine. Wish every year could be like this!
We took a week in late July to the SW. weather was rainy and much cooler. Home was 35 degrees, holiday was 16! We just took clothes for every weather and made the most of it!

lynsey91 · 19/08/2020 09:27

@Time2change2 yes, some places in England have had an amazing summer. Many haven't.

As I said, I live in the Midlands and although March and April were nice after that has been pretty rubbish.

Rain almost every day and not just light showers. Lots of really windy days and quite a few chilly days. We had our heating on in late May and into June.

My family are in London/Essex and every day we compared weather. It made me wish we hadn't moved

chomalungma · 19/08/2020 09:35

It was lovely in March, April and May - would have been great for camping....except that wasn't allowed on campsites.

Been a bit crap up here - but we have had some nice days out this week and even found some new beaches at Hornsea and Skipsea.

shinynewapple2020 · 19/08/2020 22:59

I live in the Midlands too and my experience has been that we got some gorgeous weather during lockdown period, a lot of not so good weather since but still many days that I've spent outdoors relaxing in the garden - I think working from home I've had more time in the afternoon to get out side when the weather has been kind .

Have enjoyed this thread in so much as reading about Lyme Regis and surrounding areas . I've never been to that area but it certainly sounds worth a visit .

We have weekend break planned in west wales and forecast is horrendous. We booked with an option that we could rearrange for free but rest of the family wants to go this weekend so they'd better not complain !

Dowser · 21/08/2020 10:51

Spring was a lot better on the n e coast than usual but then summer has been pretty much as per usual and I pop the heating on most days .
Yesterday was lovely after Wednesdays gloom and we made most of the nice weather by tackling the garden.

I’d love to go to the se coast but can’t bear the thought of the Great Wall of the South so we go to the sw instead.

Dowser · 21/08/2020 10:53

I’ve been going to Cardiff off and on for 60 years.
I only found out that it’s the wettest city in the uk just two years ago, when we are gazing out at the rain pelting down for the third day in August.
