Shite holiday weather incoming. So disappointed.

Poor WFH DH and uni year-in-industry DS1. Also WFH. And a drifting off-to-uni DS2.

Just, sadly, sorting out our holiday packing, now; packed yesterday in anticipation of a sunny holiday.

Lyme Regis, cottage (£850..). So sad to be taking so much 'sun' related stuff out, as it's pointless given that we have thick cloud, then an 'unexpected deep Atlantic Low' on Tuesday/Weds. Rain for the rest of the week.

I know it can't be helped but I'm so disappointed for everyone, as we were banking on this 'amazing summer' lasting for us. But there it is.

I know others are suffering far worse. But it looked so hopeful, so positive! I was getting my hopes up that we'd have a lovely, bright, sunny, life-affirming break from WFH 4 walls!

But nope.

I'm not looking for responses, I'm just so sorry for my family who have worked so hard, for so long - with this little chink of 'yay!

But the weather will be nasty.

I hear you we camped with dc when younger and after a shocking year in dorest where it rained 9 days out of 14 i think (not 100% sure why we didnt just come home- eternal ooh the weather will change coastal optomists..... we said never again and have camped in france getting further south every year :) ..... until this year.... we have a week booked in cornwall -
its a fab site and we have camped for years but the forecast is rubbish and I have the glooms... just thinking about packing is :( I dont want to be thinking layers/waterproofs - I want to be stocking up on factor50 and linen...

cant even cheer myself up with booking somewhere nice for oct half term !

I am prioritising loading my kindle with new books and cake ......

chomalungma · 15/08/2020 12:34

We have booked just 2 nights camping in the Dales.
Forecast is for thunderstorms.
Normally we'd be camping in the South of France.

Keeping an eye on the forecast - but it's depressing at the moment.

Coffeeandbeans · 15/08/2020 12:36

I’ve got 8 nights booked next week Dorset and and Devon camping. We will be coming home if it rains constantly. You just can’t get clothes dry in a tent so even with the right clothes it’s still becomes hard work.

i feel your pain we were supposed to go to Naples at the end of September and i have cancelled it due to the current situation so instead of a historic city with sunny blue skies and Pompei which was on my bucket list like forever we will be in a holiday cottage in wales nice but the weather will probably be wellies and big coats instead of tee shirts and jeans

To quote Billy Connolly, ' There's never the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes'. I live in Scotland- beautiful but the compromise is changeable weather. It's all about attitude.

Miljea · 15/08/2020 13:25

Well, DH is usually considerably more upbeat than me, but he watched the 7 day forecast and began unpacking stuff from the car; so no beach shelter, inflatable dinghy, beach chairs or esky!

Guess we'll be travelling lighter!

Whilst understanding the 'lucky to have a holiday at all' sentiment, frankly right now I'd prefer to stay home and be £850 better off, if I'm honest!

At least the rain has turned to drizzle...

But you aren't allowed to say that to anyone complaining about the heat, are you? 😂

I am genuinely delighted for folks who love nothing more than horizontal freezing rain. But I'd prefer some sunshine. In August. On the Dorset coast. Seeing as it's been beautiful for most of the last fortnight.

I get it OP. The last time we took our main summer holiday in England was 1977. Two weeks in Cornwall and it rained solidly for 14 days. Since then my precious main hols were all in Greece or Spain because I want guaranteed sun.
We had short uk breaks especially when DC were little but you expected to be on the beach wrapped up in fleeces and anoraks.
Last year my travel plans were cancelled due to breast cancer and I had dreams of lots of travelling this year but now other health problems as well as covid.
I have booked 3 nights in the Dales. It will be a change of scenery and I will expect the worst weather but hope for it to be at least dry.

I was in Lyme yesterday.. so beautiful- we love it so much.. temp was 22% and overcast .. beach was well attended - many in the sea and paddle boarding.. I swam , was in for hours. Much preferred it to 36 degrees of heat.. where you are exhausted taking 5 steps let alone climbing up the High Street.. !

Ahh see.

I'd have sat on beach in shelter with a book whilst ds was in sea on boat. I just go by temperature rather than weather and south coast generally that is the one thing you can be sure of - it won't be cold!

DrCoconut · 15/08/2020 15:06

I'm with you OP. Just looked at the weather app and it's around 19 to 20 and rain every day. I know liking good weather is a dirty word on here but I'd be worried too. Sitting huddled in waterproofs or needing hot chocolate to get warm after swimming is not the same as a nice t shirt and shorts beach day. Do go to Antonio's though. Fab Italian food.

Deadposhtory · 15/08/2020 15:14

We are not going away. I'd love to go. Count your blessings

shinynewapple2020 · 15/08/2020 15:16

You'll probably have better weather Than you think OP. My experience of UK holidays over the past few years has been a heatwave the week before we went then rain forecast for our week away. But in practice if it's showers it's easy to manage to get out and about in between the showers . I think it makes for a lot nicer holiday if you are self catering than hotel as well as you can change your eating times to coincide with when it's raining (unless you are planning to sit outside in a pub beer garden in which case eat at whatever time it's not raining.

We have a weekend away planned for next week . Last week there were media pictures of our destination under water following flooding - and there is more rain planned for this week, plus gale force winds when we go on Friday . And we're staying in a premier inn so not much room to lounge about and avoid the weather . We have already managed one week away though earlier in July so I shouldn't moan !

shinynewapple2020 · 15/08/2020 15:22

@Spanielmadness

It’s very silly to expect good weather in UK. It’s like you want to have something to complain about. We drove to the South of France and had a beautiful 2 weeks. You need to be realistic in your expectations.

People like to be hopeful though don't they?

And anyway if she'd booked two weeks in France like you did she'd now be having to cancel or worry about quarantine so hardly the most sensible response .

LindainLockdown · 15/08/2020 15:44

The weather is so often better than the forecast. I am sweltering today in blazing sun in the north of England when we were promised a cool overcast day on the forecast just last night (which I would prefer). Sorry, that is not really what you want to hear, but the point is the forecast is often inaccurate.

Nsky · 15/08/2020 15:48

I totally get it, I have family in Italy and Spain, go for thr sun and change of scene.
England isn’t so good weather wise

We are good away in our (very small!) caravan with 2 DC. Rain forecast all week of course. Would much prefer to be in a cottage. Oh well!

MinnieMousse · 15/08/2020 15:55

going away

80sMum · 15/08/2020 15:59

Oh, what rotten luck, OP. I know it's not the same when the sun's not out, but try to enjoy the change of scenery anyway. On the plus side, a walk along the beach on a non sunny day will be a lot less crowded.

We went to Tenerife a few years ago and it was cool and rainy every day for the whole week. It didn't help that the locals said they had had marvellous weather up until the day before we arrived! We had another holiday in Lanzarote that was also very cloudy and wet. So, even in the Canaries, the sun doesn't always shine!

GiantKitten · 15/08/2020 16:03

The thumbnails on the forecast pages tend to show the worst weather that day IME.
BBC app shows black cloud & light rain for Tue & Thu, but when you open the details they’re both cloud/sun all afternoon Smile
