Shite holiday weather incoming. So disappointed.

Poor WFH DH and uni year-in-industry DS1. Also WFH. And a drifting off-to-uni DS2.

Just, sadly, sorting out our holiday packing, now; packed yesterday in anticipation of a sunny holiday.

Lyme Regis, cottage (£850..). So sad to be taking so much 'sun' related stuff out, as it's pointless given that we have thick cloud, then an 'unexpected deep Atlantic Low' on Tuesday/Weds. Rain for the rest of the week.

I know it can't be helped but I'm so disappointed for everyone, as we were banking on this 'amazing summer' lasting for us. But there it is.

I know others are suffering far worse. But it looked so hopeful, so positive! I was getting my hopes up that we'd have a lovely, bright, sunny, life-affirming break from WFH 4 walls!

But nope.

I'm not looking for responses, I'm just so sorry for my family who have worked so hard, for so long - with this little chink of 'yay!

But the weather will be nasty.

I wouldn't rely on the forecast. Where I am we were supposed to have had thunderstorms for the last three days - not a drop of rain!

Movinghouseatlast · 15/08/2020 08:59

We are in Cornwall and the last few days the forecast has been rain. We had rain for about 3 hours last night from 8pm but otherwise it has been hot and cloudy!

£850 is a bargain for a cottage in August!

Miljea · 15/08/2020 09:12

The cottage is very small, 2 bedrooms, a 2m x 2m 'enclosed' outdoor space, no parking and the front door opens onto the main road through Lyme 😂.

It was a last minute thing so it was all that was left.

We can't get in til 5pm, but given the murk and fine drizzle this morning, we've decided to not go on an amble along the coast, we'll drive direct (2.5 hours).

I'm trying hard to 'make the most of it' though right now I as struggling to summon up much enthusiasm! I've got the light on in my bedroom!

I'm interested to hear that people in Australia also look back fondly on Spanish holidays! It was our retirement plan, until Brexit.

You should have gone to Italy, I just got back it was fab

Puffinhead · 15/08/2020 09:16

I’m currently staying on the Dorset Coast not too far from Lyme. The weather is a bit unpredictable but we find the bad weather generally blows over quicker. Also, if you look at the met office and BBC weather websites you get completely different forecasts! Have a cream tea and enjoy your holiday.

Mumratheevergiving · 15/08/2020 09:16

Honestly a change of scene will do you good. Holiday is a break from routine not necessarily sunbathing. You can still relax and read a good book & get fresh air.

Miljea - I hope you are not doing all the packing for your family? You wouldn’t be doing your grown up sons any favours if you are.

Silvercatowner · 15/08/2020 09:17

Flowers I hope you manage to have a good time, OP. Try to ignore the 'I love a good gale and raging rainstorm when I'm on holiday and I don't have the imagination to understand that my perspective isn't definitive' brigade,

GenderApostate19 · 15/08/2020 09:23

The holiday we had to cancel - huge beachside lodge with hot tub outside for 4 adults/3 kids (baby Grandson’s first holiday) was at May half term which, of course, had amazing weather.

I’ve rebooked for HT next year - watch it piss down with gale force winds.

Whoever said June is more reliable 😳 June is always a washout, my garden is beautiful in May then gets destroyed in June, without fail.

Super helpful, OP will just jump in her time machine and book Italy 🙄
bridgetjonesmassivepants · 15/08/2020 09:38

I totally understand. Yes, of course you can still enjoy yourself in dodgy weather but it it so much nicer when the sun is out. It is especially annoying to be going on holiday next week when the week just gone was so amazing weather wise.

We are off to Wales on Sunday and of course we expected some rain but rain predicted every day when we have just had a heat wave is bloody annoying. Everything we have booked is outdoors and it would have been far more fun in a bit of sun.

At least we aren't camping though and at least we still get a holiday.

Babdoc · 15/08/2020 09:41

Don’t make yourself miserable in advance, OP. Forecasts can be wrong, and weather can vary a lot even within a few miles. I live in a river valley that often has three different “weathers” along its 25 mile length - fog at the coastal end, sunshine in the middle, and rain at the inner end.
I’m going to NE Scotland for a few days - my first holiday in 15 months, and after being ill since March with long Covid. The forecast is rain there too, and my lungs are too damaged for long walks, but I intend to take my brolly and potter gently round Crathes castle gardens, and slowly along riverbanks and short forest trails. Plus enjoy the company of my DD and her partner, much appreciated as I live alone.
Try to be positive and make the best of whatever is available - you will enjoy it much more than if you spend the time moaning about the lack of sun. Easier said than done, I know, but if you can keep your family’s spirits up, all of you can still
have a nice holiday. Good luck!

Mumratheevergiving · 15/08/2020 09:44

It is annoying when things don’t go to plan & we weren’t able to go on our holiday to Portugal this year (but had a good week in mixed weather in Devon) overall it’s worth accepting 2020 is a year of disappointments!

amieejust · 15/08/2020 09:47

@PeacefulPlease

You are going on holiday which is more than other people will do.
This. Just make the best of it. I and many others would love any sort of holiday at the moment Sad
Thirtyrock39 · 15/08/2020 09:49

Same for us but I'm hoping quieter beaches etc would hate to be at a seaside resort in a heat wave
It's a change of scene that's the main thing

Schoolchoicesucks · 15/08/2020 10:10

I hear you OP. I'm sure you can and will make the best of it. But it's gutting when you just wanted to have a break in the sun and instead you're having to put a brave face on.

We had the same wet week in 2012 and had holidays abroad ever since.

Wine and waterproofs.

BikeTyson · 15/08/2020 10:12

I bet it will end up better weather than you think. Rain was forecast all week up here but there was only actually 2 crap days. That often happens. It’s not the same as a villa abroad with a pool and wall to wall sub but I hope you have a relaxing break!

whiteroseredrose · 15/08/2020 10:13

With a British holiday always pack for all weathers. That's why we talk about the weather so much. It's such a mixed bag.

Forecasts change. We were in Iceland last week. Forecast heavy rain and wind for 5/7 days but it only really rained once.

FAQs · 15/08/2020 10:19

I’m currently sat in my car with DD and dog, we are camping in North Cornwall, since Sunday it has rained every night including a cracking thunder and lightning show one night. Everything we own is moist.

I’m discovered I’m definitely not a camper. Managed to get a last minutes Airbnb for two nights so we can be dry and warm before we go home early.

The days have been ok though. Sure you’ll be fine in a cottage, which is what I usually do but Covid reduces salary changes plans.

Have fun Grin

BrieAndChilli · 15/08/2020 10:19

We have just come back from camping. A couple of weeks ago forecast was sub sun sun. Then the day before we left it turned to thunderstorms and showers every day!!
Reality - boiling hot, blue skies, for up to 32 degrees one day. Rained on our last night and morning. So I wouldn’t take too much stock in weather forecasts!!

AnneBullen · 15/08/2020 10:26

Monkey world is good for kids in cool cloudy weather

Crunchymum · 15/08/2020 11:27

We have booked 5 days at the seaside just before the kids go back. I fully expect to be packing wellies, waterproofs, warmer clothes and long sleeved PJ's (I'll be utterly flabbergasted if we get decent weather)

We'll make the most of it anyway. We lost our May holiday and we've done feck all else really so I'm determined that we will have a nice break....

Katyy · 15/08/2020 11:53

That’s why I never book until last minute, there’s always something available. Hope it’s better than you think .

MarshaBradyo · 15/08/2020 11:55

So unpredictable. It’s hard to book in advance in U.K. (unless you don’t mind rainy holidays)

noses11 · 15/08/2020 11:58

The weather almost always improves once schools go back. Just as cream crackers fall butter side down and animals demand food earlier at weekends.

Spanielmadness · 15/08/2020 12:08

It’s very silly to expect good weather in UK. It’s like you want to have something to complain about.
We drove to the South of France and had a beautiful 2 weeks.
You need to be realistic in your expectations.
