ADs deflower male cucumbers for the Greater Good. All phallic aubergines welcome .

Because bitter male cucumbers don't bring joy, but phallic aubergines can raise an irreverent smile.

AD chat continues about life, the universe and everything. We know the answer is 42 but what is the question?
6x7?
How many roads must a man walk down?
How many unsadly reincarnations have PHE put into the database?

I'd love it if Drakeford was right, but I suspect, as with NZ somethings just delay the inevitable. Up to a point, I think we do need to keep on thinking about vulnerable, elderly and immunosuppressed and try to avoid them having 'the wrong sort of contact'. BUT, in the end, effective vaccination is not going to be in place for everyone in the short term and the virus is not going to go away. I really believe that we are going to need herd immunity. (Think of NZ). The more young and fit people get it the better. I hate that that means there will be some deaths and long term issues for a few of them, but flu kills children and young people every year, as do many other things and I will not worship at the alter of Covid deaths being the only important ones.

justasking111 · 14/08/2020 19:23

@TheOrchidKiller I wrote the other day about a surgeon at a huge hospital down south, their management have come to the conclusion that it is asymptomatic staff that are spreading covid despite all the green red areas they are using, the changing of PPE, showering etc.

Why are the staff not tested weekly do asymptomatic people test negative? Or is it they cannot afford them to go off to isolate at home. At our hospital in Wales it was the staff they decided who were the spreaders.

TheOrchidKiller · 14/08/2020 19:55

@justasking111 we're community so perhaps have slightly different issues than a hospital with spreading, although care homes are risky.

I don't know why we're not all tested in the NHS weekly but I suspect it is that if one of us tests positive that could easily shut down a whole department. Some of us are having weekly tests as part of studies, others have self-isolated & got tested with cold symptoms. So far so good.

I'm not disagreeing that we could spread it if asymptomatic, just cheesed off with the dementory tone when life is joyless enough.

I am also sure there are health workers who aren't being careful, in or out of work. Most of us don't want to harm anyone, or dump on our colleagues by causing mass self-isolation.

The thing is, I could be as careful as possible & catch it because of bad luck.

amicissimma · 14/08/2020 20:10

Now what are they doing with the figures?

Gov.uk says "Definition of COVID-19 related deaths

There are 2 definitions of a death in a person with COVID-19 in England, one broader measure and one measure reflecting current trends:

  1. A death in a person with a laboratory-confirmed positive COVID-19 and either: died within 60 days of the first specimen date or died more than 60 days after the first specimen date, only if COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate
  2. A death in a person with a laboratory-confirmed positive COVID-19 test and died within (equal to or less than) 28 days of the first positive specimen date. The PHE data series does not include deaths where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate but a laboratory test was not carried out or failed. All deaths within 60 days of a positive specimen are counted regardless of the cause of death. This aims to provide the most comprehensive measure of mortality burden possible." (My bold)
SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 14/08/2020 20:12

I thought that was bonkers too but I think it's also how they count flu deaths. I would hope if you were decapitated in a car crash (for instance!) you would not be a Covid sadly death, but I'm not sure.

bakingcupcakes · 14/08/2020 20:52

@Ibake I think I was 5 when the Berlin wall came down and it meant nothing to me then. It was only during uni I watched a film about it and realised what a massive thing it was.

I honestly wish I still lived in Wales. I'd much rather do distancing and no masks. Round me distancing seems to have finished and I blame the mask mandate. I think it's a big mistake.

For some reason MN has stopped working in my internet browser so I'm having to use chrome. It's very irritating. I had to look my password up to sign back in and post.

I went to Aldi yesterday during the day for the first time in ages. Usually go about 9pm after the kids are asleep. Everyone in masks, busy, no-one keeping any kind of distance. Fine by me, but not really how it's meant to be working is it?

I'm honestly tempted to convince DH to do a little holiday to Wales on the first week of Sept (DD doesn't go back to school until the 8th) and do all the back to school uniform / shoes etc shopping while there.

Justgivemewine · 14/08/2020 21:49

Meh, just posted this on other thread then found you’d all defected over here.

Goodness you ladies don’t half chat a lot 😁

I rely on you lot for a sanity check on what’s happening in the world as I’ve given up watching the news, I have no idea what most of the current guidelines are except mask wearing, sod that, Amazon is my friend.
I saw a woman driving alone wearing one a yesterday. 🤯

99 don’t leave MN because of one miserable arse.

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 14/08/2020 21:52

Yeah. I've seen a few people driving alone in masks today. I am totally cool with people making their own risk assessments. That's as it should be. But what kind of risk have they identified? Nuts!!!

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 14/08/2020 22:04

I saw two masked drivers in one day, yesterday. Both on their own in the car. Nutters.

justasking111 · 14/08/2020 22:05

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito ah please come visit, it really is lovely here in September.

So am I right in thinking because of masks people are now getting up close and personal, some folk choose to wear masks here, but we still steer around each other politely. Mind you it might be different in a city. That is daft you do not swap one for the other. I am sure BoJo and Sturgeon did not advocate that.

SomewhereEast · 14/08/2020 22:10

The distancing ship has definitely sailed round here (East Yorks) in the past few weeks. It slid outdoors months ago - which I'm fine with (risk is miniscule) - but masks have made a big difference indoors. No one bothers at any more. It will be horribly ironic if whatever benefits masks might confer is cancelled by people totally not bothering their arse SDing.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/08/2020 22:12

I'll admit that panic attack mode does not do wonders for my distancing. I'm better off uncovered with a clear head. I go to the supermarket at quiet times anyway as it's just less bother.

Also hand sanitising in shops etc has totally dropped off, and I bet hand washing has dropped off too. I'm quite into making the effort with hand hygiene, given its a pretty sensible non-intrusive measure....oddly I'm now the only person I know who bothers slapping a bit of sanitiser on the DC before and after they hit the playground. I feel like a dementor Grin.

bakingcupcakes · 14/08/2020 22:18

The not distancing doesn't bother me outdoors ie walking past someone but inside I'd rather people stayed further away. I'm north west and there's no distancing going on anywhere here now. Pretty sure it was meant to be masks as well as distancing.

I'm seriously considering doing my Christmas shopping in wales if it's still no masks. I don't know north wales at all though so no idea where I'd go.

TheOrchidKiller · 14/08/2020 22:19

As I remember it, masks in shops etc was originally muttered about if you couldn't maintain adequate distancing. Can't remember if that distance was 1m or 2m.

Anyway, prior to mandatory masks in England I noticed the mask wearers getting closer in shops than non-mask wearers.

Then masks were brought in & although we're still told to keep apart- ads in the paper, for example, queues still in force outside some shops, once you're in, it's a free-for-all.

My impression was that if we kept apart we wouldn't necessarily need masks.

But what do I know?!

I hand sanatise DS and myself before and after parks too. And I use my own going in & out of shops. Some of the sanitisers seem to make my skin crack.

If DS doesn't go to sleep soon I think I might cry. Grin I want to go to bed but I need to get his presents out first.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 14/08/2020 22:26

@justasking111 any recommendations? Would probably need to be camping or Airbnb as we're on furlough money still. Our overdraft is getting more use than its had in years. Sad

justasking111 · 14/08/2020 22:35

Some lovely camping sites on Anglesey, avoid Towyn, Kinmel Bay, Rhyl apparently no social distancing going on there. I would spend a bit more and try to find an airbnb only because I really do not fancy the loos shower blocks. Hafan y Mor in Pwllheli is good for children caravan/chalets. Lots of things for DCs to do outside in NW Wales, we have Greenwood, Zip wire, Trampolines in caverns. Tree tops, bloody high trees with rope ladders etc.

justasking111 · 14/08/2020 22:36

If you want to get school uniform, a trip to Llandudno, Marks, Asda, would be the best place to go.

AgentCooper · 14/08/2020 22:59

Checking in. DH and I have been away the past few days in the East Neuk of Fife with DS, spending so much time outside (swimming in the sea!) that you’d forget anything was going on.

A friend from work told me she was allowed into the office to collect some stuff and there’s a sign up outside the toilets saying only one person at a time. There are ten fucking stalls in there 🤦🏻‍♀️

BogRollBOGOF · 14/08/2020 23:01

I've done our uniform online with M&S, although I'd do that anyway. With only one size between both DSs, I cruelly just buy the bigger size and let DS2 look slightly drowned rather than the constant palaver of checking every label. Until Christmas they shared a room so had a drawer to shove the lot in anyway.

I have bought different socks this time. They've both gone up a size together so DS2 has coloured toes, and DS1 the plain seamless ones. Since seperating rooms, socks have been a PITA.

At least last year was the year that I decided the polo shirts had enough length and didn't look too trashed, so kept the old ones. Just as well as they haven't had the full year!

It's just remembering what they wear for PE, which is confusing as DS1 came off swimming at Feb half term so has only had about 3 weeks of PE in the past 18m!

Been watching Hot Fuzz this evening. The Greater Good! Brilliant film. If forgotten how good the editing and cinematography was.

I avoid Marks these days as a result of their mixed sex changing room policy but a big Asda would do the trick. Just need to convince DH he wants a little trip to Wales... Grin

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 14/08/2020 23:10

I discovered this evening that DD has lost her school blazer . So we have to replace that. I also need to get her new school shoes and trainers for PE, as she’s grown two shoe sizes since March. I wouldn’t mind so much if I hadn’t bought her new shoes at the end of February - £40 down the drain. Apart from that, she had all new uniform at the beginning of Y5, and it all still fits, so unless she Haas a ridiculous growth spurt I hope not to buy her anything more for primary school.
