Because bitter male cucumbers don't bring joy, but phallic aubergines can raise an irreverent smile.

AD chat continues about life, the universe and everything. We know the answer is 42 but what is the question?
6x7?
How many roads must a man walk down?
How many unsadly reincarnations have PHE put into the database?

Congratulations, @LivinLaVidaLoki. That's great news!

yoikes · 22/08/2020 20:18

congrats loki

Bollss · 22/08/2020 20:18

@LivinLaVidaLoki

Oh my god I just realised....with all the ranting I forgot to share some good news.

I've been accepted onto a Masters Degree course through work. Fully funded.

Congratulations WineFlowersStar

@LivinLaVidaLoki
Thank you and congratulations

Dowser · 22/08/2020 20:21

It just grinds in and on and on
Ad infinitum
I heartily agree yoikes

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 22/08/2020 20:45

@LivinLaVidaLoki

Congratulations and Well Done

Think you got this one a little bit wrong
Also poverty kills too, but you don't give a shit about that as you cannot sneeze "poor" onto someone.

They can't have "Poor" sneezed onto them is closer to the truth.

They don't give a shit about anyone else catching Covid only about them spreading it.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 22/08/2020 20:48

Congratulations @LivinLaVidaLoki! Great news. Do you start next month?

Hope you’re feeling better, @Dowser.

Is anyone else having terrible trouble getting DC to do anything that isn’t on a screen? DD was moderately obsessed with Minecraft pre-lockdown, but it’s got so much worse. We let her get away with a lot till June because it was a way of staying in touch with her friends, but it’s been really hard to pull it back. We’ve had two tantrums today because of it.

DD2 is a complete screen girl...we sent her off to North Yorkshire to be with horses this worked. Tempory reprieve I think she'll be back to screens this week.
wanderings · 22/08/2020 21:03

@yoikes That thread could have been started by Boris himself - it's exactly the sort of minimising he'll do pre-election (if his own party haven't ousted him by then). "Only a few of you lost your jobs, but I listened to the people (does that sound familiar?) and imposed lockdown. The good news is that I personally saved all your lives."

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 22/08/2020 21:12

I’m the only* mum in the WORLD who won’t let them have a console in their bedroom and unlimited screen time.

*i suspect this may not be true.

I had to digital detox DS1 when he was 2 when I finally felt human after a tough pregnancy and postnatal period (which included continuing SPD and a month of chicken pox) I used to put a timer on the TV and strategically made sure I was in a completely different part of the house when it switched off so that the resulting meltdown wasn't directed at me Grin Over a couple of weeks the meltdowns gradually wore off...
These days I have a parental controls app where it's controlled through our phones with a couple of sessions through the day. They would sit happily and minecraft for 12 hours without noticing if they weren't policed.

At the start ot the month, they earned a week's tech ban for deleting the app off my phone... bonus, the TV was broken. I say a tech ban, they had to do extra chores to earn it. I'm not that much of a masochist to not offer a mutually agreeable lockdown after 4+ months stuck around together Wink

I did point out that without the app on my phone, I couldn't grant time extensions... so I doubt they'll try that trick again in a hurry...

Brilliant news, @LivinLaVidaLoki.

@yoikes
I'm not sure if it's the peri menopause or just lockdown but I'm so bloody fed up of it all.

^could it be both? Blush that's a hot flush, not blushing.

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane
You are definitely not the only mother with screen rules. Went through a phase a few years ago of unplugging the wireless router at night & storing it under our bed. Only to discover that DD had obtained a neighbour's wifi password & could log in by sitting on the landing in the middle of the night. Didn't know whether to be cross or impressed by her enterprise.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 22/08/2020 21:51

Oh God, @TheOrchidKiller, DD would absolutely do that.

We have quite strict screen rules, but enforcing the boundaries is just a constant battle, and then I lose enthusiasm for the rest of the day. But I shouldn’t complain, it’s nothing like having to manage this with very small ones.

TheOrchidKiller · 22/08/2020 21:54

Very clever! We didn't have a computer at home when DCs were tiny (tablets & smartphones possibly weren't commonplace then), just a TV & VCR. We used to record a bit of CBeebies each day & put it on to suit us, & when the tape stopped they believed the TV had finished for the day. We got away with this for a while, until they sussed. They were not amused.

TheOrchidKiller · 22/08/2020 22:02

@ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson
It used to really bother me that they weren't getting enough sleep etc. Once she'd worked out how to hack in to other peoples' wifi we lost the battle. It's not like we could ask the neighbours to unplug their wifi at 9pm too!

Bollss · 22/08/2020 22:19

So, oh wise AD's should I book a holiday for next year or not?

I want to, but I'm worried that we won't have been allowed our freedom back by then, but if I don't book now, I'm worried prices will escalate well out of my budget or there won't be any availability.....

Don't know what to do for the best!

yoikes · 22/08/2020 22:27

Wrt screen time it's like anything isn't it? Moderation is key.

We held out on tvs in bedrooms til they were 12 but it's just a monitor they can watch dvds on.

They have ipads and phones now they are older. They know I periodically check both for downloaded apps messages etc
We have a ps4 that isn't played with much but that has parental controls on it.

I have to say I credit the alphablocks and Harry letters apps with teaching ds2 his letter sounds before pre school 😃

yoikes · 22/08/2020 22:30

Well, I just thought "feck it" last week and I booked a week in Northumberland at October half term ☺

Our summer (UK) holiday was cancelled and I've really felt it 😢 it's only a week away but I look forward to it all year.

It's my only break from life/work/family stresses.

I need to be somewhere else that isn't here

yoikes · 22/08/2020 22:31

I think it probably is both orchid...poor dh. What a shrill Harridan I am 😃😬

chocolatesweets · 22/08/2020 22:33

@Dowser

I’m just very tired today. Blocked ears and a cough The world can turn without me today ☹️
Oww❤️
BogRollBOGOF · 22/08/2020 22:40

Based on nothing but my own optomism, I reckon by next summer it will be fine. The tourism industry can't afford for it not to be. This winter will not be a repeat of last winter, and by next Easter everyone except a handful of people will be desperate for normality... if not before. It's growing anyway.

People are talking more about the increase in known cases not being matched by hospitalisation and deaths which will quench the demands for restrictive measures. The delayed openings were only for a couple of weeks when the lag didn't reveal increases in serious outcomes.

I think the big picture of next summer will be normal. Proper normal.

Hi All, can I rejoin you? I got so fed up with the negativity and vitriol spouted by a lot of posters on various threads that it affected me quite badly and I thought it was sensible to deregister and take a step away for a while. I'm back with a name change and feeling a bit better and am able to look at things with a bit more perspective. I've missed a couple of threads but I'm glad to have found you again, rude veg and all!

@TrustTheGeneGenie we were looking ahead to holidays next year only today! We're booking Greece in August and hopefully a cruise next Christmas.

Awh that will be lovely. We went to Northumberland last year in may. Loved it!

Yeah see this is what I'm thinking but I just don't know. It's the two weeks isolation possibility that's putting me off booking.
