Weird noise in house.... 3/4 high pitched beeps

So we’re all in bed. I’m the only one awake.

Out of the blue I hear 3 or 4 high pitched beeps, followed by pause, followed by 3 or 4 more. Then nothing more after that or since.

Pretty loud, and ear piercing and feel certain it came from inside our house, although all the windows are open so maybe from outside. I don’t know.

I immediately thought smoke alarm, Went downstairs and no smoke, to fire, and the alarm was still quiet. Checked all rooms downstairs, silent and no smoke or anything.

I feel sure our smoke alarm has a slightly lower pitch to it anyway... this was really high pitch. Happened twice and nothing since.

I’m now sat here wondering what it was and on edge that it might happen again?!

Any suggestions????

My smoke alarm batteries make a high pitch intermittent beep when they need changing.

Greengagetree · 13/08/2020 22:16

Carbon monoxide detector?

nocoolnamesleft · 13/08/2020 22:16

I'd guess that it's the low battery alarm on the smoke alarm.

Sootikinstew · 13/08/2020 22:16

Van reversing outside?

Haggisfish · 13/08/2020 22:17

I think smoke alarm battery getting now. It’s a back up for when the main supply cuts out.

Angel2702 · 13/08/2020 22:17

I’d also guess at smoke alarm battery warning.

Haggisfish · 13/08/2020 22:17

Low not now!

Drbrowns · 13/08/2020 22:18

Smoke alarm or carbon monoxide alarm

Soontobe60 · 13/08/2020 22:19

I agree with smoke alarm battery warning. Get new batteries tomorrow

Knobblybobbly · 13/08/2020 22:19

So our smoke alarm chirps when the batteries are low. So I don’t think it’s that.

I hadn’t thought of the carbon monoxide monitor.... what does it mean if it just beeps twice and then silence? It’s been 20 mins since it went off now roughly.

Our carbon monoxide detector does this when it is low on battery - took me ages to work out what it was.

Yep me as well.

I totally destroyed a smoke detector before I clicked on Blush it drove me batshit

LightAsTheBreeze · 13/08/2020 22:21

There will be an expiry date on CO detector, battery may be running out but you have to get a new monitor when they expire, usually 5 or 10 years

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 13/08/2020 22:22

Could be the carbon monoxide alarm. If it's coming up for 7 years old it could be telling you it needs replacing. ( mine did this yesterday, after a panicked call to our gas engineer and a boiler check turned out the alarm was just old)

AristotleAteMyHamster · 13/08/2020 22:22

Carbon monoxide monitor battery getting low. That’s how I found out the previous owner had left one on top of the cupboard...

Mrsjayy · 13/08/2020 22:23

Your Carbon monoxide has a shelf life its ran out you need to change it that is maybe the noise you have to gey a new one and not change the batteries.

Mrsjayy · 13/08/2020 22:27

They last 5- 7 years then need replaced,

Knobblybobbly · 13/08/2020 22:27

Ah ok. It must be that. Will it keep going off periodically in the night or can I go to sleep now and sort it in the morning?

Yes it’s almost exactly 5 years since we moved in!!

If you have a cordless landline phone, check it's in the charging cradle properly.

Miljea · 13/08/2020 22:32

We had 3 bips in a row, 20 odd minutes apart, from somewhere in the house, every night for 3-4 years. Til it stopped 🧐

Assume some bit of free tech DH picked up at some trade fair: Shoved in a drawer.

Knobblybobbly · 13/08/2020 22:35

I need to work out where the carbon monoxide alarm is, don’t I?

Bloody hell! I was planning an early night!!

FlamingoAndJohn · 13/08/2020 22:37

I have this in my classroom. I can only hear it when all the children have gone and I’m in my room on my own.

Never work out what it was.
