Maggot help!!!!!

Fortnightly bin pick ups- 5 week wait for an appointment at the tip- cut to me Sunday night spending 3hrs boiling, bleachIn the bins And the drive way- hundreds of millions of them!!! Finally thought I tackled them- rebadged every bag 3/4 times. They are back today- I have again rebaged and bleach- I just need to keep them at bay until Thursday when my bin gets collected. What else can I do?

Not much you can do if flies lay their eggs around the bin. I would do the boiling water. What is the bleach for?

Not much help now but once bins collected leave them open. Maggots will hatch and fly away. Problem solved.

It's the food waste and being in full sun

Do you wash your recyclables? Generally not washing them causes this.

Apparently ant powder does the job

I get them at my food waste bin sometimes as that only gets collected every 2 weeks. My general waste and other recycling is on a 3 week cycle

Out of interest why does it take 3 hours?

Surely you'd

1. remove rubbish, re bag it.
2. hose down wheelie bin
3. set upside down to dry off a bit
4. replace rubbish. All done in 20min?

No bleach required ime. Re drive, if you must pour some boiling water but that's 5min including boiling time !

I dont think bleach makes much difference. Boiling water is the easiest to use. I remember making some soupy mess with salt and boiling water one time

Keep bin sealed shut with a brick on top on something.

Ensure you keep your food waste covered and then sealed and put in said bin (if you don't have food collection separately)

Flies are attractive to smell of food and will lay eggs in it. If you block their access they cannot so that.

It's hard in this weather but very possible.

I use Neutradol Dustbin Odour Destroyer. I’ve not had any since and it keeps the bin dry of food rot over the fortnightly bin collection.

I have found bleach does not really help. They can survive it - the spray anyway

They hate boiling water

Spray Indorex inside and outside of the bin and any flies that touch it die. It also retards the development of any eggs and maggots.
You don’t have to keep spraying either, the effects last for a while, as long as you don’t wash it off.
Normally I hate using insecticide sprays, but make an exception for flies and maggots 🤮

I buy Indorex online for around £8.

And obviously don’t let birds eat any dead flies or maggots!!

But eventually they will hatch into flies! do people honestly let maggots just sit cms from their house until nature takes its course?

It’s awful but we get maggots some years and I just leave it, they eventually either get taken away with the bin men or fly away! They’re only a problem for a few weeks. Or you could get a cleaner who does the bins after the bin men have been

Since we've had the bin cleaning service we haven't had any maggots , don't know what they use xxx

Any neighbours with ducks or chickens? They'd love them! Or advertise to fishermen?

I bought Bin Buddy from Amazon a few years ago, I only use it the warmer months, still on my first lot. Works for me, smells nice.

Oh my goodness this reminds me of this one time..... i stupidly left my full bin in the sun next to my front door rather than round the corner. 11pm comes and I'm shutting down the house for bed and I see some things wriggling across the glass of the front door- they must have been attracted to the hallway light. Opened the door and it was like a horror film! My door was covered in maggots which then started dropping inside the open door onto the mat and burying into it 🤢🤮 I did bleach and hot water too. Hopefully someone has a better solution for you!

Any neighbours with ducks or chickens? sadly not, zone 4 London terraced house - also starting kitchen work this wk, 6 months pregnant, this heat - the maggots have tipped me over the edge!!
I’ve ant powdered - bricks on top of the bin- I’ll check tomorrow afternoon again before bin day, fingers x

Out of interest why does it take 3 hours? because there were thousands upon thousands, in the bin, on the bags and in the bin shed.
They didn’t instantly die, then I tried to hose them down to the gutter but they got stuck in the ridges of the brick work. I can’t lie I looked like a fucking mental patient: sweating, pregnant, in a maxi dress bleaching, spraying bathroom cleaner once I ran out of bleach, pans of boiling water....my poor neighbours (I have apologised)
