Fortnightly bin pick ups- 5 week wait for an appointment at the tip- cut to me Sunday night spending 3hrs boiling, bleachIn the bins And the drive way- hundreds of millions of them!!! Finally thought I tackled them- rebadged every bag 3/4 times. They are back today- I have again rebaged and bleach- I just need to keep them at bay until Thursday when my bin gets collected. What else can I do?

OnlyFools I feel for you! I had this happen once, I only noticed when they had made it INSIDE my house and they were scrabbling for the light being cast on my carpet by the tv. It was 11pm and I was frantic, it’s horrid! Rebag tightly and plenty of boiling water is all you can do :( is there nowhere you can store your bags until pick up day?

TroysMammy · 11/08/2020 19:59

My Dad used to use Jeyes Fluid.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/08/2020 20:02

Clevererthanyou horrifying!!!

Bags are in the bin, trying to think of anywhere shaded to put the big bin, can’t think of Anywhere (not risking the garage as I have my buggy in there etc)

I knew I had maggots in my bin about three weeks ago. As it wasn't long until it was going to be emptied, I just left it.
After it was emptied I poured in three kettles of boiling water (which killed any remaining maggots) and then tipped it out onto my grass. You could tip it down a nearby drain if you prefer.
I then gave it a scrub out with a long handled brush and left it to dry - it's fine now.

wheresmyhairytoe · 11/08/2020 20:07

Honestly, I've had them in my food bin. Opened the lid and the birds flew in and out, all gone within the hour.

slipperywhensparticus · 11/08/2020 20:09

I salt my bin bleach does nothing

CasuallyMasculine · 11/08/2020 20:11

So pleased we have a separate food waste bin.

But I think you’re overreacting personally.

VerbenaGirl · 11/08/2020 20:12

The little buggers can survive bleach. Boiling water and birds both work though.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/08/2020 20:15

But I think you’re overreacting personally I actually I agree- my husband definitely agrees, it’s a phobia I hate all those kind of things. I get very stressed about things encroaching my home, having lived in a flat where I couldn’t get rid of the mice for years it’s honestly left me with PTSD of some kind.

CasuallyMasculine · 11/08/2020 20:16

If you’ve actually got a diagnosis of PTSD, I apologise for my post.

Trashtara · 11/08/2020 20:17

honestly let maggots just sit cms from their house until nature takes its course?

Yes. I've honestly never paid enough attention to my bin to know if it had maggots but it must ask when I open it flies come out.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/08/2020 20:18

Sorry bit tongue n cheek but I do get utterly stressed and wound up by such things.
Had a mouse at work pop up next to my desk and I literally ran, burst through our boardroom to the nearest exit, my boss was like wtf.

Used to tip water in and swill them out but now I just leave them. They always disappear. It's magical and even more so as I've expended zero effort on doing it.

espressoontap · 11/08/2020 20:42

I'm the same as you, OP. My husband is too. They are disgusting. In our old house we used to get slugs, it made us so unhappy. Even after we had our kitchen done beautifully they got in. Any critters stress us out, I won't tell you what happened when we found a mouse 😫

Polnm · 11/08/2020 21:01

Why are you killing them?
Go fishing
Let them hatch
Let’s bird eat them

Chill

Bleaching is destroying the planet

Clevererthanyou · 15/08/2020 12:42

I didn’t hoover the carpet OP, had a baby in bed asleep so I donned my marigolds and brushed them onto a dustpan before putting them outside in the infested bin and rebagging them. I disinfected my drains and scrubbed the carpet afterwards but seriously, I never want to see hundreds of maggots crawling(squirming?) towards me ever again.

goingtotown · 15/08/2020 12:52

Fly Killer in the bin, keep the lid down they die & drop to the bottom.
