Lavender - should it be in food?

Curious what people think...

Just had some Co Op Blackcurrant and Lemon ice cream.
DH thought it was lush.
The Junior Engineer thought it tasted like soap.

I checked the ingredients and it said "... with a hint of lavender".

Essential oil, soap, room fragrance, candles, linen spray, all of those things.
BUT.
Does it work in food, I ask you?

God no. Abomination. I love lavender but not to eat

ArriettyJones · 08/08/2020 19:10

Nice in lemonade.

CodenameVillanelle · 08/08/2020 19:10

No, it's vile

TheSpottedZebra · 08/08/2020 19:11

In very limited quantities. Some lavender shortbread- lovely. But too much lavender and it's granny's bath salts.

Augustseemsbetter · 08/08/2020 19:11

Not in food for me. I've tried it thinking I'd like it too.

And I wouldn't have a garden without lavender.

Bambooshoot · 08/08/2020 19:12

Absolutely not.

I love the smell of freesias, and hyacinth, which are a hundred times nicer than the stink of lavender - but I still don’t want to eat them.

Greenglassteacup · 08/08/2020 19:13

No. I like rose or violet flavours but definitely not lavender

MrsGrindah · 08/08/2020 19:13

No. Once had some lavender shortbread in a restaurant and the taste stayed in my mouth for 48 hours after! It was like I’d eaten soap.

Travellingraspberry · 08/08/2020 19:14

Absolutely not!

ladykuga · 08/08/2020 19:15

I had Lavender Chicken at John Torodes old restaurant and it was sublime and a taste sensation. The memory has brought a smile to my face. Thanks.

MikeUniformMike · 08/08/2020 19:16

Yes, in chocolate. Guaranteed to make me stay away from it.

Itsmemaggie · 08/08/2020 19:18

No. I actually have some of that ice cream in the freezer and was looking forward to it. Not so much now ☹️

I add it to cheesecake and it is totally delicious!! Honey, lemon and lavender, sounds like a cold remedy but it is truly tasty. Has to be dried lavender flowers, not flavouring. I have to say I was sceptical.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 08/08/2020 19:18

Yes -in small doses.

DD2 (14) makes the most delicious lemon & lavender biscuits and lavender and honey madeleines.

Cabinfever10 · 08/08/2020 19:19

Its nice mixed with camomile tea

Augustseemsbetter · 08/08/2020 19:19

Maybe like rosemary it would taste better in something savoury.

I'm tempted to try it with chicken now!

LentilBolognese · 08/08/2020 19:19

I once had it with some goats cheese and honey in France. I hated the idea, but it was strangely incredible!

itsaratrap · 08/08/2020 19:20

It is a herb. Our guinea pig loves it. The humans, not so keen.

IceniSky · 08/08/2020 19:22

I'm obsessed with lavender and rose flavour!

Whattheduck · 08/08/2020 19:23

Lavender Scones and Lavender Victoria Sponge are delicious

user1294625849274 · 08/08/2020 19:24

English or French lavender? Or another kind?

I think French lavender would be a lot less likely to make your food taste like soap/perfume unless you really went overboard.

It's just another herb. You like it or you don't. Maybe if rosemary or basil soaps/perfumes were really popular it would make us less keen on eating them too? Dunno.

I'm not a big fan of most herbs though.

I HATE lavender. With A Passion!!!

HOWEVER, south of France, lavender ice cream...seriously good!! Doesn't even smell like the nasty stuff.

DENMAN03 · 08/08/2020 19:26

Tastes amazing with duck. Can't be heavy handed with it however.

IsadoraQuagmire · 08/08/2020 19:26

I love anything tasting of lavender, it's my favorite scent too.
