York restaurant recommendations

Bearsbearsbears40 · 06/08/2020 21:13

We are (hopefully, Covid permitting), heading to York for a weekend at the end of this month. Can anybody recommend a good restaurant or two in town we can book in to? Mid range price is fine, happy with most types of food. Thanks!

1331 Café & Restaurant is nice, you need to call to book (number is 01904 661130 - it's not on their website)

We like Ambiente Tapas, there's a couple of restaurants in York. Also Cafe Concerto but I've not checked whether they're open at the moment.

I hope you get here and have a lovely time.

PatriciaHolm · 06/08/2020 21:35

Can second Ambiente, we had a lovely meal there in Feb.

PS I ate at Judges in July so can vouch for their Covid systems :-)

Lucia was AMAZING! & it was super cheap for what we got!

tac10 · 06/08/2020 22:03

Not too many restaurants were open when we went the other weekend. However we had dinner at Lucia’s Friday and Star in the City on Saturday both were great though the star is a bit pricey and I must admit we preferred Lucia’s. 😊 Things may change towards the end of the month but we had to book, they didn’t allow walk ins. You also had to leave your details for track and trace. Enjoy

Another vote for Lucias.

Blue Barbakan. Lovely Polish food. Personally think Lucias is overrated Grin

MissRabbitIsExhausted · 06/08/2020 22:29

Another vote for Luccias, we've always had a great meal in there and the prices are very reasonable. The cocktails upstairs are nice too!

Dobbyhasnomaster · 06/08/2020 22:31

Del Rios! Or ambiente tapas

IggyAce · 06/08/2020 22:33

Gutso was lovely when we visited York last year.

Loveluella · 06/08/2020 22:33

Star inn the city and ambiente are both great. Rustique is cheap and cheerful but good too and they have 2 restaurants so can usually get a reservation

Geometricprince · 06/08/2020 22:33

Skosh is amazing. Its not cheap but worth every penny.

Geometricprince · 06/08/2020 22:34

Oh and rustique is lovely too

TwoZeroTwoZero · 06/08/2020 22:38

The Ivy was nice. Not sure if it's open though.

jolokoy · 06/08/2020 22:41

If you're really interested in food food then The Rattle Owl - a hidden gem. Right by Skosh but you'll get a table. Really extraordinarily good food.

Neighneigh · 06/08/2020 22:44

For breakfast or lunch try the Pig and Pastry on Bishy (Bishopthorpe) Road. They haven't got much seating but Rowntree Park is a) amazing and b) very close. P&P were one of the main organisers of a free food service for vulnerable people during lock down and are wonderful people all round, plus the food is great and v cheap

Bearsbearsbears40 · 07/08/2020 17:59

Ooh thanks everyone!

I went to a lovely restaurant in York back on Feb, I can't remember the name but it was something to do with gardening, it had a garden theme and we had kebabs, garlic butter, lovely side salads. I will be back when I remember the name!

Yamashita40 · 07/08/2020 18:37

Was it The Botanist Tiredmum?

Dowser · 07/08/2020 19:34

Thanks for tips
We go to york once or twice a week
Only been to 1331 which was nice and Bella italia which has now closed as has Carluke iOS
I’m pretty sure the ivy is open but don’t think Betty’s is

Dowser · 07/08/2020 19:35

Carluccios

Footle · 07/08/2020 19:40

I'm tempted to recommend Pete Madden's by Bootham Bar but he probably closed his doors in about 1970.. thanks for awakening the student memories though.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfthigh · 07/08/2020 19:43

Russell's Carvery. Can't remember where it is, but it's goooooood.

A long time ago, there was a cafe off the Shambles called Ronando's. They did the best lasagne I've ever had. I wish they were still there.
