@SomewhereEast

Those my-cousin's-hairdresser's-friend-is-a-frontline-worker people are the fucking worst. I think some people just like to feel they're at the centre of every drama, or want to claim to have some kind of insider info to make themselves look important. It reminds me of all those 'my friend's cousin's neighbour was ALMOST on that flight or ALMOST in that building' anecdotes you get around terrorist attacks.
all those 'my friend's cousin's neighbour was ALMOST on that flight or ALMOST in that building' anecdotes you get around terrorist attacks

Or piggy backing on any celebrity's death.
I call them grief tourists

@Pleasedontdothat same here, almost word for word. With the added touch of bleach 'fogging' monthly. It's so depressing. I honestly worry about the human race generally - we're throwing all of our biggest ammo at a virus that yes is nasty for some but it's not Ebola. What will we do when it/another builds resistance to all these extreme measures and we've got nothing left to throw at it. Immune systems rely on constant challenge. I'm depressed that otherwise intelligent people think attempting to sterilise our environment is a good move.

PinkFondantFancy · 04/08/2020 12:05

Trains and train stations also being fogged

Dowser · 04/08/2020 12:05

@DrearyWallAntler
What about all the bleach and detail we flush down our loos
On the detox label it actually says it kills coronavirus

So, really there shouldn’t be anything in the sewage

Grey skies, wet dismal weather is a bit of a kicker today
An early taste of what winter is going to be like
Only more of it with knobs on

I’ve always said schools break up too late

Sounds like overkill! How in earth do they think other places have worked throughout all this without all that nonsense? Maybe they should just get everyone in and provide bubble wrap at the front door to wrap yourself in? Be much cheaper😉

I said as much about immune systems on another thread. Without anything to fight for months and months how are our immune systems going to cope in the future? Especially when people haven't been over there doorstep in 6 months! Plus is every cough and cold going to be perceived as covid and testing and isolating going to go on forever? No other disease has had so much thrown at it at the expense of human lives ever. When did we ever become so terrified of something we hid away for months?

NothingIsWrong · 04/08/2020 12:37

I'm also peripherally involved in sewers, although my stuff consists of building over the top of them and having little fights with Thames Water Developer Services... and I love an OS map.

Those of you who like geology, have a look for the iGeology app - has them all online :-)

IfNotNowThen2 · 04/08/2020 12:58

Hello sane people. I lurk mostly but have enjoyed the sewer talk! I really really don't want to be fogged with bleach. Sad
Was walking down the main road tother day and could hardly breathe due to more traffic than ever. I quite enjoyed being able to breathe when actual lockdown was on, but now as almost no one is taking public transport because of masks ( so there are all these semi rural and suburban buses with 3 people in masks on them..).
A lot of people ( no time to check stats now) die from pollution every year. Oceans are choking in plastic. These things matter too.
I'm getting really angry at how shit it is to be poor and it working class now too.
I think all the people calling for more and harsher lockdown measures are working at home and have a big garden, a home office and a car!
It's shit when you have to go to your retail job and sit for an hour on a bus with a mask, get screamed at by customers for not wearing a mask, then home in a mask to a tower block with no garden full of newly unemployed people smoking weed all day. Not me, but plenty of people I know are living this life.
And yeah, poorer people are not observing the social distance as much, not in my experience, but life is all about small pleasures when you can't spend lockdown planning your next £3000 holiday or decorating your house.
It's really brought it home to me how unequal the effects of all this are.

CruCru · 04/08/2020 12:59

There’s a good thing in the Times today. I won’t copy and paste but it basically says “Treating us like children won’t keep us safe - Britons are losing the ability to evaluate health risks because obedience is valued over reason”.

ButterMeCrumpets · 04/08/2020 13:10

For the immune system I read somewhere that having a dog helps. I think it's because of all the germs they bring into the house and eat and then proceed to lick you Grin

Just been chatting to someone I know and mentioned that we have cancelled part of our uk holiday because of masks mandatory inside everywhere and found out they had done exactly the same. For anyone struggling to find holidays you might want to keep checking as a lot may start to become available again.

Allflightscancelled · 04/08/2020 13:18

No other disease has had so much thrown at it at the expense of human lives ever

This is it in a nutshell for me. I just don't understand it at all.

obedience is valued over reason this also really resonates with me.

It's not just our freedoms that are being curtailed, it seems to be our ability to think independently as well. If anyone does do some independent thinking and ask a few questions, they're thick. Allegedly.

Maybe the powers that be are putting stupid pills in the water Hmm

ButterMeCrumpets · 04/08/2020 13:20

I was listening to someone on the tv yesterday saying that the government has found that introducing more restrictions is not hurting them politically.

The opposition are agreeing with them, the general public are accepting them so they can push ahead with more things.

Also a Joseph Bazalgette fan.

Every. Single. Word!

Taking shit to the tip today to prepare for the inevitable winter shit-show.

Only other person there was wearing a (paper) mask. In the rain. At the tip.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 04/08/2020 13:34

Oh my god, crossness pumping station 😍 is beautiful!

DrearyWallAntler · 04/08/2020 13:37

@Dowser

While Dettol and bleach is pretty good at killing stuff at a local level it doesn't have a huge impact at the larger scale where it's majorly dilluted. For example bleach etc are discouraged if you are on a sceptic tank as it will kill the beneficial microbes, but even that will take time and a pretty decent concentration. A one time hit won't do much, it's the sustained use that bad.

Plus raw sewage is pretty much the ideal growing medium for any microbe.

Agree with your comments.

So tired here today. Kids are hard work, tantrums and terrible twos, times two. Family have helped out this afternoon and I'm having a cup of tea in peace. Lockdown is lovely like this.

Dh thinks I'm an extremist in my views re. mask wearing and also that I state that so much is sacrificed for one virus. The mask is uncomfortable and I don't want to wear one. All this wearing one because you care about others is getting on my nerves also. I do care about others, this is why I'm obsessed with telling everyone that will listen that our reaction to this virus is way worse than the impact of the virus. I do feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall now though and I would rather be alone than in the company of dh Sad. I feel like he doesn't see the impact it's had/is having on people.

We had a huge debate that ended with me saying that the collateral damage of this virus is going to much greater than the damage of the actual virus. He was like, there's no way to prove that. No, because the scientists aren't looking that way are they? Doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Sad

I don't know. Depressing.

Allflightscancelled · 04/08/2020 13:44

the general public are accepting them I think (hope fervently) the tide may be turning. As Dowser said, there are peaceful protests planned here, there was a big one in Germany and police in Melbourne are apparently, according to the BBC just now, seeing increasing levels of anti-lockdown violence when they try to enforce the roolz.

I am all for the protests, it may give the government cause to stop and think (I don't condone the violence at all, but I do sort of understand it, people are starting to get desperate)

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 04/08/2020 13:45

Well I've just spent five minutes looking at videos of Crossness Pumping Station. Awesome. On the list for a visit once this stupidity is over.

DrearyWallAntler · 04/08/2020 13:48

I once did a day trip to Crossness. It's every bit a stunning as the photos.

Oooooh they’re lovely 😊

I would like to visit them but will hold off because the experience would be tainted by mandatory muzzles ...

Allflightscancelled · 04/08/2020 13:49

@chocolatesweets Prof Karol Sikora is very clearly saying the collateral damage for cancer patients alone (never mind anything else) is going to be worse than the virus. May be worth quoting...
