@FeelLikeGroundhogDay I'm so sorry.

@HelenaDove
"It further reinforces the one rule for one and a different rule for another."

To mis-quote George Orwell, remember, We're all in this together.
But some people are in it more equally than others.

@Anicissimma if your family refuse to buy you those maps you sack them & join my family, where at least two of us are map nerds. You'll fit right in.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 04/08/2020 07:47

@helenadove the funeral homes thing was the one which stood out for me too. I’ve never lost a loved one - but I can’t imagine it would be a joy to be snot-boarding myself.

@SpnBaby1967 good luck today.

countrygirl99 · 04/08/2020 08:12

@BogRollBOGOF I love an OS map. It's always the first thing I buy when planning a trip in the UK. I think it's telling that I'm putting off buying one for our September trip. The Norfolk and Pembrokeshire ones are sitting on the shelf never having been used 😥

Interesting article about footfall - it appears that Wales had the most significant uplift, which is telling. So although footfall is slowly increasing facemasks have not given it the boost that was hoped for by the looks of it.
www.retailgazette.co.uk/blog/2020/08/sluggish-footfall-in-first-full-week-of-mandatory-face-coverings/
“The first week of the mandatory wearing of face coverings in retail stores in England did not deliver the hoped for uplift in footfall, with a rise over the week across the UK that was virtually half of that in the week before,” Springboard insights director Diane Wehrle said.

Oh my goodness. I’m so sorry that is so sad.
No words.
Apart from tragic.

There was probably a late surge of reluctant maskers the week before (like me) Grin We had speculated that the people who were confident to get out and shop maskless may not be outnumbered by the people who need a security blanket on their face (if they are indeed to altruistically protect the world from the virus that you don't have from not leaving the house for 4 months, not stop them from catching) and that there was more danger of more people being put off than encouraged.

I've just booked the tramway museum. The majority is open air and I'm going before I have to cover up in the indoor exhibitions. I was a bit torn because you have to cover on the tram, but there is only one tram ride at present, and it does help that it's sitting not moving. Better to go this week than after.

In two weeks, we should be on holiday. It's a caravan in the UK (not our usual camping because toilets) but I'm just that bit underenthused that it's going to be same shit different location. The good bit is different location by the sea. We're explorers and spontaneous. Things like the Sea Life Centre are wholly unattractive because of masking, especially as places like that tend to be humid which is likely to excede my coping strategy, they can get near my limits anyway. We only went for a week in case it was hard to fill the time enjoyably.

justasking111 · 04/08/2020 09:36

Wales the tourists are not wearing masks I only see a few worn by older people in the supermarket here. Will seem strange when they go home perhaps. Are majority of folks wearing masks in England then. Someone kicking off about Cheshire Oaks saying people not social distancing or wearing masks

amicissimma · 04/08/2020 09:43

DrearyWallAntler, I remember the geological maps from my geography A level days. They were fascinating.

But, I think that the maps the OS is being asked to prepare are to show the man-made features underground such as pipelines, cables, tunnels etc, which apparently aren't reliably recorded, and certainly not in one place. It was a tiny article that caught my eye as I turned the newspaper page and now I regret that I didn't go back and study it more carefully.

The standard OS maps, the geological ones plus the new ones would provide hours and hours of enjoyment for someone who likes that kind of thing.

(Apologies to the people who are trying to have a conversation about Covid-related matters!)

SpnBaby1967 · 04/08/2020 09:44

The only place I have been since the masks rule came in was the car supermarket showroom when I bought my car in the first week of the regulations.

DH and DD11 have been out a lot more in theirs and DD is totally unfazed. In fact DS9 feels left out not needing to wear them Grin

I have no issue really with wearing a mask, in so far as I'm very much 🤷‍♀️ about it. But that doesnt mean I'm eager to wear one and head out and about in one.

Best thing about these chats is the total randomness we talk about. Grin
@TheOrchidKiller

It's unlikely to be even postcode specific. It will most likely be set on what are called 'catchments'. Each catchment will go to a treatment plant. The plants will serve anywhere between 1000 and 30,000 houses, the larger stations will be more accessible so that's the place to start.

Also, the water companies have a very sketchy idea of how many drains they actually have all thanks to the sewer transfer act which gave them responsibility for sewers previously owned by a local authority, mainly constructed under public health act. Which dates back to 1848. You can imagine the record keeping. Not exactly digital format.

The likelyhood of them pinpointing an exact house (or street) is slim to none. Streets can cross drainage catchments and they don't really follow things you can see, they are based on the level and capacity of the infrastructure. Your next door neighbour could drain to a completely different treatment works to you.

If the tech is rolled out to pumping stations (the next easiest place) then the area could be refined, but as pumping stations can serve anything between 2 and 10000 homes it doesn't refine it that much. And you will be putting the tech in the larger ones first.

(Sorry, sewerage is my specialist subject)
Don’t be sorry! That was really interesting.

NannyPhlegm · 04/08/2020 10:42

I am fascinated by the sewerage discussion!

Polkadotties · 04/08/2020 10:47

I can’t remember who it was but thank you whoever mentioned prof. Karol Sikora’s tweets. I’ve been following him since yesterday and it has opened my eyes up even more.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/08/2020 10:51

We've had aubergines too.
Last time I did moussaka, DS1 had a meltdown because aubergines... I knew he didn't like them so didn't even put any on his plate, but he still objected to their existance in the same room Grin

BellaintheWychElm · 04/08/2020 10:54

@NannyPhlegm

I am fascinated by the sewerage discussion!
Me too - I work in the field (a relative newcomer as moved from a different industry) and it's been really interesting to see what goes into running the clean water and sewerage plants which wouldn't have crossed my mind beforehand
Pleasedontdothat · 04/08/2020 11:04

Sewerage discussion is great! There’s a beautiful Victorian building near me which looks like a stately home/museum/cathedral but is actually a water treatment plant. I’ll often take a detour just to look at it

Just came across a dementor in the wild at work - I was only trying to make a cuppa and there's only supposed to be one of us at a time in the kitchen so he wasn't even following the roolz whilst talking bollocks at me.

Apparently his daughter works on the front line at a local hospital and apparently there has been no let up AT ALL with new cases going into hospital, it is just as bad as it was before. Now - you can see hospital admission data, and I can categorically say he is talking shit about that particular hospital. So either she is telling him rubbish or he is just making stuff up. Problem is some people will be taking this at face value and be worried unnecessarily.

DominaShantotto · 04/08/2020 11:24

That's half the problem on here - there are people who talk such shit with such confidence they come across as plausible - and they're the sort of arrogant twats who will just talk down anyone who disagrees with them.

Francois Balloux is also a good follow! There's a guy called David Paton (academic with a background in economics I think?) who is good for statistics, very occasionally interspersed with other views you may or may not agree with (he's a conservative Catholic). Oliver Johnson is also good for stats & mercilessly pulling the piss out of Indy Sage. Apologies if you already know all or most of these. They've helped keep me sane throughout.
Willow2017 · 04/08/2020 11:49

BellaintheWychElm did you tell him to stop talking shite and get out the kitchen?😉

Loving the map and water works chat. Not sure if it was the building in your photo or not Pleasedontdothat but I love a history programme and remember seeing a water storage/supply building which was amazing with columns and painted machinery vaulted ceilings etc it was amazing.

Well plans for today out the window as pouring bloody rain. So have to face the dreaded housework😞
I am annoyed with myself as didn't check when hairdressers started opening and book ds2 a hair appoint as soon as poss. Not hopeful but trying today he is back to school in a week. No mental SD just basic sense , no masks, just trying to keep classes close to limit movement possibly alternating days in each subject area i guess and staged breaks and lunch. Transport now not stupidly "10 kids in a 70 seater bus" but business as usual. And college is opening too. Fingers crossed it all goes well.

Funnily after all this time it still seems like the 'holidays' have gone too fast as ususl😄

Thisdressneedspockets · 04/08/2020 11:49

So there's still no law change to make the increased Greater Manchester restrictions anything more than guidance.
I wonder why that would be?
Is it because it was a knee jerk thing for Eid and not reflected in figures, so has no justification.

Having been subjected to the worry of police enforcing laws that didn't exist in the beginning ( searching shopping, Easter eggs, road blocks etc), I'm concerned this could be happening again.

Those my-cousin's-hairdresser's-friend-is-a-frontline-worker people are the fucking worst. I think some people just like to feel they're at the centre of every drama, or want to claim to have some kind of insider info to make themselves look important. It reminds me of all those 'my friend's cousin's neighbour was ALMOST on that flight or ALMOST in that building' anecdotes you get around terrorist attacks.

Pleasedontdothat · 04/08/2020 11:53

We’ve just had our ‘return to the office guidance’ ...

It’s opening in early September but no one will be forced to go in if they don’t want to. It’s going to be operating at a third of its normal capacity and will be closed on Fridays for a deep clean. There’s a one way system, no mug or cutlery provided, no hot desking- if you want to commit to two days a week you will be allocated a desk which no one else will be allowed to —lick— touch but you won’t be able to leave anything on it when you go home - if you just want to come in every now and then you have to pre-book a desk otherwise your security pass won’t be activated. All collaboration and break out spaces are closed, the 4 person meeting rooms are now just for 1 person Hmm, only one person allowed in the lift at a time, one of the staircases will be ‘up’ and the other ‘down’, we’re allowed on the roof terrace but all the furniture has been removed etc etc etc

As HR are still recommending that all meetings are done via Teams there really is no point in going back in .. I wonder if they’ll keep all this in place for the usual winter viruses for years to come .. cos you can’t be too careful can you Hmm
