Could you go on holiday alone?

I think the only way I'm going to be able to get away this year is by myself. So I'm wondering, would it be okay or just a bit tragic?

Have done for the last few years. I like my own company.

That said, I don't have a DP or DC, so that might be different.

Its all about mindset imho. I was going to go away for a trip alone, first one ever, then lockdown happened. I planned 4 days I think, just in case I hated it. Book the nicest accommodation you can afford. I picked a place (Iceland) that had group excursions, shops to wander, had an itinerary of sorts. Eating alone is probably my biggest quandry. For Iceland I had booked an apartment and planned to have a nice meal out on my birthday. Otherwise I would want to research places for dinner before, eat early maybe? Also I'd think about do you want to be around families or no kids/single friendly accommodation.

I'm sure loads of people will come along and say they had a great time, best thing ever, do it.

Previously I have been on small group trips with strangers usually around a purpose like walking, outdoor activities, thats good as less decisions to make.

I did it a lot throughout my early 30s and had a good time. Not tragic at all, it's good to have you time

God yes! It would be a joy.
I am lucky enough to be able to travel around the Highlands and Islands with my job which requires overnight stays. if I’m on the islands I tack on a few days leave and enjoy the utter bliss of being away from home and dh and the housework. Love being somewhere new on my own.

I love going away by myself. Even now I have a partner, I usually try to take at least one solo trip a year. Freedom to do whatever you want without consulting anyone, can meet other people - tons of positives. It's so liberating. I recommend everyone tries it at least once. Do it!

Depending on travel restrictions I might go away for a few days by myself. Frankly it would be wonderful- I could really do with a bit of alone time to decompress.

I miss solo travel so much! The ability to get up and do exactly what you want to do, no hanging around waiting for another person, the ability to change your plans at a moment’s notice.

You have to work a bit harder, but the rewards are also greater - you try a bit harder to talk to locals, you chat to other tourists, and you have different experiences than if you’re travelling with someone and can retreat into your own conversations and company.

There are downsides but it’s certainly not tragic - lots of people do it and it’s incredibly fulfilling.

Where are you thinking of going?

Yes!! Dh and I have agreed that next year we will each go away alone for 4/5 days to a destination of our choice. We have two toddlers and holidays just seem more stressful than our normal routine.

Not tragic at all.

Yes! Not sure how old you are but if you're not bothered about staying in a fancy hotel you will always meet people in hostels.

I done it years ago during study leave for my final uni exams. Took the view that I'd rather be stuck pouring over books for 14 hours a day in the sunshine. I hated it. Was too scared to go out to eat alone and survived on bread and chicken soup in my apartment...

I do think that I'm more sure of myself now and I'd be a little more comfortable now though

I’ve been for a short trip away solo, and enjoyed it. As others have said, the eating is the only ‘awkward’ part, specifically in the evening. I found I would make the most of the days but have my evenings back at the apartment. I’m not one for sitting in a bar on my own or approaching strangers! But going to the beach during the day was no issue, got through several books and I enjoyed sightseeing and shopping. I’d definitely do it again.

Yes, it would be OK. I did it myself several times before starting my family. Where are you thinking of going? I used to go away for a fortnight but sometimes I'd fly out from the airport near work and go to a foreign city for a break - I'd fly out after work on Friday and then back overnight on the Sunday night/Monday morning and go straight to work!

Yes, I would and have done so in the past and I don't think it's remotely tragic - quite the opposite! Even when I'm holiday with my family I often bugger off on my own for a bit. I leave them on their screens and they're still on them when I get back. I love nothing more than to sit in a cafe with a book and a drink and watch the world go by.

A few years after my husband died I went to Turkey for 10 days on my own . I was nearly 60 and I loved it. I hardly spoke to a single person in that time and all I had to do was please myself
