I love when my hoover crackles, because I know that means it’s picking up all the dirt!

OP posts:
wildthingsinthenight · 29/07/2020 23:10

The sound of someone typing or writing

PineappleSquosh · 29/07/2020 23:12

Wind wuthering round the house or making a susurrus in the trees that sounds like the ocean.

Passmethecrisps · 29/07/2020 23:23

This is a lovely thread and not at all random.

Many of mine are very standard:
Rain and wind while I am tucked up in bed
A cork popping
The sea birds who live across the field first thing in the morning
When the wind is a certain direction and I can hear the station announcements from the train station about a mile away
Similarly impacted by wind is the sound of cricket being played over the river.

Almost the opposite is at the end of term years ago we used to shut off the main power supply for classrooms. The sound (or lack of) of all the computers and the strip lights all stopping at once was amazing.

The coo of wood pigeons perched somewhere along the avenue, with songbirds trilling in the background. The crunch of gravel. The breeze rustling through a stand of beeches and pines and the Virginia creeper. The chirps of swallows aloft on a summer evening. The ticking and chiming of an old grandfather clock in the stillness of a cool hall.

My grandmother's house.

Allmyeye · 30/07/2020 01:46

The sound of heavy rain. All the better if you’re in a caravan or conservatory.

safariboot · 30/07/2020 01:53

The clink of a spoon on a mug when somebody's making tea.

Tillygetsit · 30/07/2020 03:37

The dcs laughing especially together. My dog doing a Wookie impression. The woodpigeons cooing whilst sat on the chimney. It fills the living room. The sea.

LunaNorth · 30/07/2020 03:49

Waves.
Wind and rain at night.
The funny chirrupy groans my Boston terriers do when they’re desperately trying to tell me something.
Brass band music.
Logs crackling.
Toothbrushing.
Baby laughter.
My two grown up sons always end up singing together when they do the dishes. Love that.
School playgrounds.
Church bells - I can hear them where I live and I’m missing them during this Covid nonsense.
My husband playing his guitar and singing.

HermioneMakepeace · 30/07/2020 03:52

The sound of a London Black Cab engine. I know when I hear this I will get home safely.

The sound that the ATM makes when it's counting your money.

Furries · 30/07/2020 04:03

Love all the posts, so descriptive and definitely evoke memories and feelings. For me:

My cat who has the best purr ever. It’s either ramped up during the day or, my favourite, low and rumbling when he curls up with me at night. I have insomnia and find this sound so soothing (not worked tonight though!)

Agree with a PP who said that ambient noise when on a beach with eyes closed - but mainly the waves gently lapping at the shore.

Sitting in my “summer” house, but prefer it in autumn/winter with a glass of red and the rain hitting the roof and windows.

Owls - don’t hear them often, but love it when I do.

Most of mine, and others I’ve seen above, are those “soothing/memory” sounds. On the opposite end of the scale, I love hearing a Chinook fly over. And nothing beats the sound of a Typhoon flying overhead - would give anything to experience a flight in one!

compulsivesnacker · 30/07/2020 04:07

Clinking of halyard shackles against masts in the marina in the breeze.
Ice cracking in a glass when you pour.
Waves receding on pebble beaches.
They are the relaxing ones.
Big fuck off jet engines at rotation.
That’s not a relaxing one. That is a massive rush of adrenaline. Grin

compulsivesnacker · 30/07/2020 04:09

Omg furries I just read yours. I swear that’s hilarious. Great minds Grin

compulsivesnacker · 30/07/2020 04:10

Spent years clearing aircraft for take-off and loitering on pans. Flown a lot but no Typhoons 😂

TheoriginalLEM · 30/07/2020 04:26

My dogs breathing when they in a deep sleep. My DP breathing the same - prefer the dogs though!

Birdsong

The sound of gulls screaming for food.

Gregorian chanting

The rain on my window.

The sound of night time creatures when im in my tent.

The weird sound that trains make when they are in the station.

The orient express - somerimes it passes through our station and i can hear it letting off steam.

Manolin · 30/07/2020 06:31

Waiting For Cousteau

The dawn chorus

Waves drawing back over pebbles - that sucking and chattering sound

A rainforest at night - the loudest and most powerful sound I’ve ever heard

Cowbells on a Swiss herd - amazing when they are spread out over a large area and you get a range of intensity as each bell makes that soft metallic echo as the cow tears the grass

Zaphodsotherhead · 30/07/2020 09:56

The clink of a bit when you take the bridle off it's peg - it's full of anticipation for me.
I also quite like the rumble of the empty silage trailers as they go past my house - but not when they drown out the denoument of the detective drama i am trying to watch!

squashyhat · 30/07/2020 10:05

Thunder rumbling in the distance, especially at night.
Local bellringing practice on a Friday evening.
Owls hooting in the trees behind my house.
American train horns (although not when travelling behind one - it went on all night at every farm track and crossing)

Furries · 30/07/2020 10:37

@compulsivesnacker - ha, definitely great minds!! I live rurally, but fairly near to where an annual air show takes place, so I’m lucky enough to watch from my back garden as the planes fly there and back. Always get goose bumps when I hear the Typhoon approaching in the distance, then get to hear it as it “performs” and then watch it fly back again.

Wow, interesting job! What type of airport? My dad would have loved you! Can remember “days out” as kids in the 70’s, sitting in the car by perimeter fences as dad plane watched! He bought a computer way before they were a common household item and developed a database on a very specific small plane, the information is now used by enthusiasts round the world. I was bored stiff as a kid, but it obviously rubbed off on me somehow!

5LeafPenguin · 30/07/2020 11:18

Waves pulling back on a shingle beach.

The sound of a band or orchestra polishing a piece for performance.

Jubilee line train leaving a station.
