www.gov.uk/guidance/get-a-discount-with-the-eat-out-to-help-out-scheme#find-a-restaurant

Enter your postcode, see the restaurants within 2 miles which have signed up. Really pleased to see a lot of the smaller places near me have signed up for the scheme and will definitely be supporting them.

Is this for England only? I've entered my Scottish postcode and I've got an error message "enter a real postcode" Grin

Honestly I'm so confused at the moment about what announcements are relevant to what parts of the UK

RoseDog · 28/07/2020 09:22

My postcode in Scotland isn't real either!

dancemom · 28/07/2020 09:28

My Scottish postcode worked

SockYarn · 28/07/2020 10:13

No issues with my Scottish postcode either. This is a UK-wide scheme.

I checked last night and have a couple of places I would like to try.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/07/2020 10:47

I thought Nandos was on it?

The 2 mile limit is unhelpful, but you don't have to put your own postcode in to search. I'm about 5 miles outside a city with not much worth going to locally, so to search the city centre, I just find a postcode from any old business off google maps in the city centre and use that to search.

SockYarn · 28/07/2020 11:08

Nando's is a franchise I think - they may have left it up to individual franchisees to decide whether to take part? That appears to be what other brands like Subway have done - some local to me are on the list, others aren't.

OP posts:
SockYarn · 28/07/2020 11:08

Oh and it also says that more businesses may be added to the list.

@Vicbarbarkley

Its a shame you cant select a distance. Two miles just about gets me onto a 'b' road😁 Nothing is coming up for me, but there are some chains (pubs) reasonably close by.
can you put in a post code a couple of miles away to get further away results? My results are coming up from a 5 mile radius
RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 28/07/2020 11:17

Thank you for posting this

We were planning on using it a fair bit even if just for coffee...whether it happens or not is a different matter

But the link is very handy

CherryCocktails · 28/07/2020 11:32

How does this work then? Do you just go there and get automatic discount or do you need to get a voucher etc?

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 28/07/2020 11:38

I think you go and get an automatic discount

They claim the money back a bit later

SockYarn · 28/07/2020 12:11

You don't need a voucher.

You get up to £10 as a 50% discount off food and soft drinks. So if you go to a restaurant and spend £18 on a pizza and a couple of cokes, you'll be billed £9. The restaurant claims the other £9 back from the government.

It's Monday to Wednesday only, but you can use the scheme as often as you like. Alcohol not included. If you have a slap up meal for two and the bill is £100, you still only get £10 per person off the meal.

But it does mean that something like a McDonald's meal typically costing £5 will be £2.50.

OP posts:
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/07/2020 12:12

I assume it will show on the bill ie. the restaurant can’t get 50% paid twice (like the vat saving not being passed along)

WorraLiberty · 28/07/2020 12:29

Nando's have said only restaurants that are open to eat-in are taking part, so to check your local.

Ours are only doing takeaway at the moment, so won't be participating.

mum2jakie · 28/07/2020 13:49

Mine shows a five mile radius. Really useful. Thanks

Thunderpunt · 28/07/2020 14:05

@HexyAndIKnowIt it may be because McD's and KFC are often franchises so it's up to the individual restaurant if they want to be part of it.

We have signed up, but it's such a faff to change the till settings for 3 days a week and then change it back again so we will be printing the full bill receipt and working it out by hand and writing the discount on the till receipt- probably looks a bit unprofessional but think our customers will understand

I wondered that, but our McD's Franchisee was in the paper over lockdown talking about his restaurants and in the article it said that the one local to me wasn't franchised and the only one in the area he didn't own.

Still, if I'm taking advantage of this I'm heading for the steakhouse not a bloody KFC 😂

Bloodybridget · 28/07/2020 15:13

It doesn't recognize my London postcode.

Bloodybridget · 28/07/2020 15:15

Tried again with no space and that worked - how stupid is that? Doesn't the Government know how postcodes are written?

Lonelykettleshed · 28/07/2020 15:21

I didn't think that it would show much as 5 miles isn't far when you live in the middle of nowhere. However, it's 5 miles as the crow flies and so it shows lots more than I expected.

tiredanddangerous · 28/07/2020 15:29

So discount is only if you eat in rather than take away? My local McDonald's, Starbucks and independent cafe are on there but are only open for drive thru or take away so I'm not sure how that works Confused

ohtheholidays · 28/07/2020 15:31

Thanks for that Sockyarn I've had 100 different places come up,some I know some I had no idea were anywhere near us.

NobbyButtons · 28/07/2020 15:37

That's useful. Might take advantage of it when we are glamping and only have a tiny camping stove.

Vicbarbarkley · 28/07/2020 18:50

@rslsys

Someone must be listening, it showed a 5 mile radius search for me.
They must have been!

My search has now gone up to five miles - and there are at least three places I am happy to eat at 😁
