What do you do when you have no money?

I had my bank card cloned. Everything’s gone. I’ve been through the banks process and they can’t help - then advises me to go to the police (lol) who, no surprise, can’t help. I literally don’t know what to do and I have nothing for 3 weeks. I have 3 kids.i can’t get a credit card or a loan, I have nothing to sell. I’m just stuck and I guess I know there’s no answer but I just needed to let it out. I’m scared. We are ok for food, but other than that im screwed.

Disclaimer: this is NOT a begging post and I am NOT hoping that any mumsnetters will offer to help in any way!!!!! I’m sure mumsnet will be along to reiterate their thoughts on this but I wanted to make it known myself too.

You need to go back to your bank. Stay on the line and speak to someone higher up if necessary.

Cancel as many dd as you can.
Ring each company and ask for a payment holiday. Be honest. When exh left I had debt and no cash. They suspended payments and reduced the amounts.. Took 2 years to pay his debts. Be upfront...

Have you reported it to action fraud?
I am surprised the bank can't help; if you report the crime they usually have processes to protect your money.
How much was taken?
What is your usual source of income - salary and/or benefits?
If salary you could ask for an advance and if benefits you could request a crisis loan.
You could also contact citizens advice to request a food voucher and to see if there are any charitable funds you could apply for.

Go to your bank, bring ID, get it sorted out

Have you flagged it up through the correct route? (Fraud department)

I am with Barclays, and when I had this situation I called customer services, asked to speak to the fraud department, and told them there were “unauthorised payments” coming out of my account

I got everything back

Your bank HAS to do this, do not be fobbed off!

Once reported you should get the money back from the bank if your card was used fraudulently.

What exactly did your bank say? Assuming you're in the UK they should refund your money.

OP- are you sure bank can’t help?

Which bank are you with? Can you name and shame, email the CEO?

My brother had this done and the bank refunded him immediately.

Yeah, your bank wouldn’t do that. You may be with out a card for a few days, but they’d refund the fraudulent transactions and cancel the cards. Or open new accounts as necessary.

The information from your bank is wrong.

A cloned card is Debit Card fraud. Banks have processes in place to deal with this - they will refund you the money whilst they dispute the payments with the retailers.

You can go to a food bank, they will also credit gas and electric if on a meter.
You can also submit a nil income form to your local council.
Apply for discretionary housing benefit if rent needs paying.
Even so I'd go back to the bank surely if there's been a fraud they have to refund you. Good luck OP it's not a nice position to be in.

Oh OP this is my worst nightmare. I don't know what to suggest that can help immediately, but in future, this may help, I have a current account with most of the major banks all but one are completely empty but could be used if needed at any time. My main account is kept with only £50 in it until the DDs are due out when I transfer enough to pay them. I have 4 active credit cards but only use 2 every month. The bulk of our funds are in easy access savings (spread over a few banks) with no bank cards attached.
I hope someone with better knowledge can give immediate advice.

Yes I spoke to the fraud department. My card was in my possession, yet the “card” and pin had been used in many different shops etc. £2-300 but it was all I had left, we went through all the transactions, we established it was not possible for anybody to access my card or know PIN number, nobody had been in my house or near me at all (I’m isolating) it sounded like the process we went through was correct and I assumed it would be refunded, but no, simply directed me to the police instead.

I assume I have fallen victim to a false front cash machine type thing, I don’t know, I’m not a criminal so no idea what they actually do. I was made to feel like basically it’s mt fault because I must not have covered up my pin at a machine? God knows.

I survived on UC. Been looking for a job but finding it impossible and either way this doesn’t help me immediately, neither does cancelling DD’s because there’s nothing in my account to be taken anyway.

This happened to my sister with HSBC. Her card was cloned used for a holiday so the bank were able to find out the name on the tickets and everything and she still didn’t get her money back despite pursuing it for two and a half years.

I don't why the bank can't help. Mine refunded me immediately when this happened to me.

Log into your UC account and add a message to request a budgeting loan ASAP.

Report to Action Fraud.

And contact citizens advice tomorrow.

Can you call or email your local food back to explain the situation? Give them your crime number from the police?

Nil income form also doesn't exist anymore.

Ok I thought crisis loans still existed.

Your bank is stringing you along.

Definitely complain to the bank. They have 8 weeks to reply and then you can go to the ombudsman. I know that doesn't help you right now, but if what you've said here is true then you're highly likely to have your complaint upheld.

The only reason not to would be if it's a relative of yours that's done this - then the banks often don't refund unless you report it to the police.

And fit right now, please do ask your friends for help. I would be really sad if any of my friends could t ask me for help. I'd happily buy shopping etc.
