What do you do when you have no money?

I had my bank card cloned. Everything’s gone. I’ve been through the banks process and they can’t help - then advises me to go to the police (lol) who, no surprise, can’t help. I literally don’t know what to do and I have nothing for 3 weeks. I have 3 kids.i can’t get a credit card or a loan, I have nothing to sell. I’m just stuck and I guess I know there’s no answer but I just needed to let it out. I’m scared. We are ok for food, but other than that im screwed.

Disclaimer: this is NOT a begging post and I am NOT hoping that any mumsnetters will offer to help in any way!!!!! I’m sure mumsnet will be along to reiterate their thoughts on this but I wanted to make it known myself too.

I just feel broken, lost, and just exhausted with life and don’t know how to move forward

Could it be something to do with your ex?

Cheetahfajita · 28/07/2020 23:27

If they are using it in stores the police will get involved and will check cctv.

YummyBelicious · 28/07/2020 23:39

As the pin has been used it's harder for them to say they will cover you, as you are only protected against fraud if you also take necessary steps to protect yourself by not letting your pin be compromised. Obviously I get that you are saying that the card has potentially been cloned, but harder to prove.

The issue could be that you may have failed ID on the phone (they won't tell you)

If possible I'd go to branch with ID and see if they can help there

A while ago I was mugged while in receipt of benefits, I was advised by the police to give my crime number to the DWP to get my payment reissued. At the very least they can redirect you to help, your local council should have a hardship fund you can apply to also.

Hairthrowaway · 29/07/2020 00:05

You should contact the financial ombudsman service & opening a formal complaint

Think about selling some stuff

Take it day by day

JaJaDingDong · 29/07/2020 00:12

I work in a bank. Not Lloyds. If what you say is true, the bank should treat this as fraud. Phone them again or go into a branch and ask to speak to the fraud team.

Sorry to hear this

As a few pop's have said:

  • food from food bank although you have said you are ok with this
  • contact dwp / job centre as they may be able to give you an advance from your universal credit which they will then take back in instalments from future payments
  • if you have prepayment gas and electric meters contact your supplier as they have assistance funds you may be able to access to enable you to receive a top up for your meters from and pay back again in instalments. You call also get assistance with this from some food banks and or council assistance funds
  • crisis loans not longer exist and this has now been replaced with assistance schemes operated by local councils. They may also be able to assist you on the school uniform front
  • if you are with a housing association rather than council they may also be able to help you and sign post you to other agencies which may be able to assist you

Not sure why it's not all the same font Confused

PerfectlyImperfectx · 29/07/2020 00:30

Oh op I feel for you. I think a lot of posters here are mixing up different types of fraud. The problem in your situation is that you’ve said it’s unauthorised but the payment was ‘authenticated’ using your card and PIN. In your situation I would ask the bank for their outcome in writing and raise a complaint. In the meantime, think about any situations you’ve been in recently which might explain how your pin was compromised. It’s not that common for a card to be cloned but it is possible. However that would only be possible using the magnetic strip and not the chip. You could ask the bank whether it would temporarily refund you while it carries out an investigation. Also speak to citizens advice.

BrieAndChilli · 29/07/2020 01:44

Using a cloned card in person is not very common for various reasons - cctv, being identified, having to have the pin also etc

We’ve had our card cloned a couple of times. First time bank rang me as transactions had been made in america and Germany on the same day and refunded everything straight away.
Second time we had a load of £10 transactions for various mobile phone top ups - all different companies, again bank refunded it all straight away.

Thinking about it DH just did a charge back on our Lloyd’s debit card as he ordered a speaker (from a dodgy site that has now closed down) and although received the speaker it doesn’t work. As no way of getting hold of seller Lloyd’s have refunded us and will contact the seller to provide proof that transaction was legit and valid. Could you ring Lloyd’s and ask for charge back on the fraudulent transactions?

Evilwasps · 29/07/2020 02:10

You have to get back onto your bank and tell them clearly that unauthorised transactions have come out of your account, no one has had access other than you and that you have been defrauded. If you have already reported it to the Police give the bank your crime reference number. If you haven't, report it to the Police then call the bank. Answer their questions but don't offer any ideas of what you think might have happened, because you don't actually know and it could seem suspicious.

They should ask you when you last used your card/account and what for. Then they should put you on to the fraud prevention team.
Ask what will happen next. They will tell you it will be investigated and the transactions will be refunded to your account within a few days. They'll tell you if their investigation concludes you did know about the transactions the amounts will be debited from your account again. They probably won't update you as the investigation proceeds because it's not your concern any longer as they have refunded your money in full (hopefully).

Do not let this go. A crime has been committed against you and the bank are not discharging their duty to you, their customer. It may not be their fault but they can do something about it. Don't give up.

Mimishimi · 29/07/2020 09:43

We had the same thing happen to us but they took thousands in the space of a few days so it was fairly obvious it was fraud.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 29/07/2020 10:22

It’s not a joint account with your ex and he’s somehow managed to get a card on the account?
