[quote justasking111]We think covid is bad try being a rabbit with Rabbit hemorrhagic disease a 70-100% mortality rate first found in China in 1984. If this ever mutated you could pretty much say sayonara to the human race.

How is it spread?

The virus is passed from rabbit to rabbit by direct transmission and is present in all the bodily fluids (so maybe coughed, urinated, dribbled or defecated out!). However, it is very stable in the environment (it is estimated to last about 100 days at room temperature, and longer if it’s cold – plus, it is resistant to freezing). As a result, the main route of transmission between colonies of rabbits is by passive transfer – the virus particles stick to the feet of a bird, rodent or human, who then carries them to new and vulnerable bunnies. In the case of pets, not even house rabbits are safe, because the virus particles may be carried in on your shoes, clothes or even your skin. Short of full biosecurity precautions (foot dips, disinfectant washes and showers, complete changes of clothing) every time you visit them, there’s always going to be a chance you’re carrying this deadly disease into the house.

In a rabbit who has been fantastically lucky, caught the disease and recovered, they will shed the virus for at least six weeks (and possibly longer) so must be kept in quarantine for a prolonged time to protect other bunnies.

Is this myxomatosis under a different name?

HeIenaDove · 24/07/2020 23:36

I carry winter gloves with me ALL the time in case i have to use a toilet when im out. Ive done this for years. I wash hands as well obvs

Re plastic gloves.............they aint happy with only making our faces sweat,,,,,,,,,they want our hands to sweat as well.

NannyPhlegm · 24/07/2020 23:44

Omg please no to mandatory plastic gloves!
I am very sorry to invoke Godwin's Law, but this is like slowly boiling a frog with the drip-drip-drip of soul-sucking loss of liberties. Every new threat makes the threat that has just come to pass look acceptable.
"Compulsory masks? Oh my word, I preferred staying at home with one mask-free walk a day"
"Compulsory gloves? Oh my word, masks don't look so bad now"

This is how a certain country went from simply labelling a certain section of society with stars (how could that possibly be a problem) to the bloody gas chambers.

I know I'm being dramatic. I know, I know I am.
But, for crying out loud! How are we sleep walking into this economic calamity?

justasking111 · 24/07/2020 23:44

@IAintentDead no it isn`t myxi. I only looked it up because we saw a dead rabbit with it out walking yesterday, the farmers say it is rampant this summer. Myxi looks quite different I have seen those rabbits as well.

Wait till they get us into that rubber barbarella clothing as well, then we will really sweat. Perhaps it is a way to get the obesity epidemic under control Grin
torydeathdrug · 24/07/2020 23:50

the glove thing is just gross & stupid beyond all imagining. But that's Wancock & Bozo through & through.

Interesting piece about the lack of science 'to follow' wrt mask wearing ... just politics. Interesting factoid that one study found cloth mask wearing was associated with an increased risk of respiratory infecions. Anyhoo ... www.cebm.net/covid-19/masking-lack-of-evidence-with-politics/

This is good too, wish we had more of it. Asking questions, thinking about answers. Not just shouting & screaming on social media senseaboutscience.org/a-better-conversation/

Covid clothes to wear shopping for him and for her

Something that concerns me us people insisting that mask wearing needs to become normal fir even the common cold. Surely this is the way that our collective immune systems become weakened. Viruses like coronavirus, rhinoviruses, influenza, parainfluenza and so on all drift constantly and shift periodically meaning that we rely on constant exposure to keep our immune systems up to date. If the current arrangement does become the new fucking normal then we lose the herd immunity that keeps these viruses relatively mild for the majority of people.

I did pop to the shops, this afternoon. Felt like my face was melting in sainsburys. The only person I saw without a mask in markses, pulled his trousers down and took a piss at the exit. It's all csrpeted there, too.🤢

PickAChew · 25/07/2020 00:00

I havr yet to see anyone explain how the hell wearing gloves protects anyone. Obviously, if I was doing surgery, sterile gloves over washed hands add an extra layer of infection control but if I wore a pair of unsterile even straight from the box nitrile gloves around Sainsburys I would not be protecting myself or anyone else any more than if I just kept my hands clean and sanitised.

HeIenaDove · 25/07/2020 00:09

If there is a spike in about three weeks the mask policy will get the blame.

Yes - you are being dramatic BUT with fucking good reason.

And I don't think we even know who the real villains are.

Incompetence in politicians definitely but other than Dom Cummings it's about power corrupting rather than this situation being planned. Pretty sure it wasn't what BoJo thought he signed up for any more than the rest of us.

torydeathdrug · 25/07/2020 00:24

@PickAChew I worry about that too. Particularly with children - there's increasing evidence that they are less susceptible to this coronavirus because of cross reactivity from other CV infections (kids get something like 10 colds a year!) ... we're locking them away from the world, potentially making them more vulnerable

Oh I wish HelenaDove!!

Unfortunately, we all know that magic masks can do no wrong

ButterMeCrumpets · 25/07/2020 06:06

But late to the conversation but wanderings I am doing the same with shops.

I think it's only by a large number of us refusing to spend our money will the government actually listen.

The media are trying to do a spin at the moment of oooo look everyone is out shopping in mass with masks. I think they hope that we will just fall in line and go out and more importantly spend. Except I have now changed everything I can to online. Takeaways are now out as I won't put a mask on to get one. I am changing my holiday outings around that as well. The only thing I still plan to do is restaurants but I am avoiding any which have complicated 'rules' such as timed sittings/one way systems etc.

Hi everyone, thank you for your kindness yesterday.

I went to our local outlet yesterday as there is one shop I wanted to go to thats there and I also wanted some new pressed powder from the body shop outlet. It was so quiet.

Plain black face covering on and my prescription sunnies....I felt like the invisible man.

Went into body shop and my powder has been discontinued. Replaced with something else, so asked the shop assistant about shades as there are no testers, she said she can't have testers as people would use them. I just explained hat while you can ask people to not use them, how are people supposed to buy foundation or anything like that if they can't see what colour they are buying? Can't even see it for a best guess through the packaging as the package is solid.

So I asked if I could return it if its wrong. No.

So I've to buy a product I can't see hope its right and if not come back for another crack? Like a make up lucky dip???

I just left it.

I did wonder on the way home though if the govt are trying to encourage those afraid out by making masks mandatory, if they have even considered the possibility that the reason people aren't shopping or eating out isn't because they don't feel its safe, but because its a frustrating and miserable experience. Which they have just made more miserable. Well played, dickhead.

ILoveTotoro · 25/07/2020 07:38

@LivinLaVidaLoki spot on ^

MaudesMum · 25/07/2020 07:45

I have arthritic hands with swollen joints and quite a lot of pain, so gloves are a real problem - I genuinely can't get anything tight-fitting on. As a result, I wear mittens in the winter, or fingerless gloves - neither of which would be of much use in a mandatory gloves wearing world!

@ButterMeCrumpets - indeed, boycotting the high street makes a lot of sense, and I'm definitely staying away from that bit of the high street which the government would notice - and I suspect that @LivinLaVidaLoki is entirely right - many of us will, because it's such a miserable experience. However, I'm not going to avoid my local high street of small independent shops - as I'd like that to still be here when all of this shitshow is over.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 25/07/2020 07:46

I suspect those squawking the loudest about masks are in fact those who WON’T go out until everyone stops dying. Of anything.

So those wearing masks and going out would’ve been the ones out and about anyway clutching their masks in their hands between shops.

I wonder if some of it increases risk of spreading bugs. For example swimming pool has put crosses on most toilets so everyone has to use just one or two

Meaning everyone using less toilets... seems to be some madness about having a space in between loos (in case it floats underneath?)

Same with showers. In communal areas, crosses on all but two...meaning people will have queue and gather in cossies in the area to wait for said showers...

Because we are not allowed to go out through the (large, no-contact) sliding doors, and instead go along many corridors and doors on the way out through a fire exit...this means customers have to wander around the whole centre spreading their germs...

It is a bit like blind rule following with little common sense. I mean what is the risk in passing someone coming in a wide door anyway, which is open to the outside, and you don't need to touch?

If you have a class booked after a swim, or the other way round, you need to leave the mins between and lurk outside before you reappear to go in the other door. Because that will free you of bugs I assume. Great in the rain.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/07/2020 07:54

Oh- and at the same time they are taking bookings of up to 40 on to classes like Zumba! Confused

Orangeblossom78 · 25/07/2020 07:55

My only way of dealing with it sometimes is to try and see the funny side.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/07/2020 07:58

Insane it seems like a collective OCD at times...the irrational nature of not feeling 'safe' and continuing to do more and more, where will it end? there is always more can be done.

Oh the other swimming mad one is you are meant to arrive 'swim ready' meaning with your cossie on, underneath your clothes, but you need to change after. I just use the changing rooms and shower although it is 'preferred not to' (you can though)

Orangeblossom78 · 25/07/2020 08:01

a clinician looks for these signs of OCD:

The obsession with contamination is gradually taking over the person's life and actions.

The individual engages in ritual cleaning or washing at least one hour a day.

Acting out the rituals is done to relieve anxiety.

The person knows the obsession with germs is foolish but feels compelled to wash or clean over and over.

There was an interesting piece in the Times yesterday - ward level data shows that 48 million people in the UK live in areas where there have been no confirmed cases in the last FOUR WEEKS (sorry for shouting). There’s an interactive table where you can check your area - there’s been no cases anywhere remotely near me - meaning that my chances of bumping into an infected person at the local shops (or being an asymptomatic carrier myself) are pretty much zero... so precisely what is the point of me wearing a mask now???
