Hairdresser and face masks

So I am going to the hairdresser next week for the first time since February 😨.

My hairdresser rang me yesterday and briefed me on what procedures will be in place and what I should expect when I attend my appointment next week.

She said she will be wearing full PPE (obviously) but she said I can bring my own mask or she can provide me with one when I get there but she also said it doesn’t bother her if I don’t want to wear a mask at all.

I had already planned to bring my own mask and wear it - it seems the right thing to do as I have a part to play too in keeping the risk of infection down.

I know I’m totally being silly, but will I be seen as being OTT if I do bring my own mask considering she’s basically said that she doesn’t care if I don’t wear a mask?

I wore a mask at my hair appointment. It didn't occur to me not to. I'm sure the guidance is that both of you should be but I can't say for definite.

I think it’s if someone is exempt they don’t feel pressured and still feel they’re able to go. It seems she’s trying to accommodate everyone if she offered a mask for you I doubt she’d be bothered you showing up with your own. Enjoy getting your hair cut, mine is currently in a cave woman state 😂

No I brought my own mask.

Not touching my face was impossible however as tiny bits of hair went down behind the mask and drove my mad with itchiness. Our hands accidnentally collided at one point while I scratched as a reaction. Frankly she had ben isolating and I was her second customer so not too worried...

I wore my own yesterday. The hairdresser wore a visor, there was someone cleaning the whole time, disposable gowns, aprons and hand sanitiser. I had to adjust it a bit as she cut round the ears, but it was OK.

It didn't occur to me to wear one. I think it would get in the way, like my glasses so would have to be removed for actual cutting anyway. My hairdresser wore a visor and used horrible useless disposable towels and gown.

She said you can wear one if you want but you don’t have to if you don’t want to... not sure why that would make you look silly? Sounds like she’s just thinking of your comfort.
You’re overthinking it. Wear a mask if you want to. And why would you care if she did think you looked silly anyway?

My hairdresser said I could wear a mask if I wanted to and she would be wearing a visor. She works alone and when I arrived she said she was fine if I didn't want to wear it. I'm fairly relaxed about Covid so chose not, this was a couple of weeks ago and I'm fine.

I went yesterday and didn't wear a mask & no other customers had one while I was there - given the measures in place I'm happy that I really didn't need to.

All the stylists wore full visors, there were plastic screens between all chairs so you never faced another customer and they cleaned all the time. So, not really needed but if you feel happier then of course you can wear it anyway.

I went yesterday, my hairdresser wore a visor and chose to wear a mask ( not obligatory).

I wore one out of respect for her tbh.

She told me that if she shows symptoms her whole team have to self isolate so I think the least I could do was wear a mask.

I personally would wear one. Those visors that hairdressers seem to be wearing for some bizarre reason will not protect you. They aren't meant to be used that way. They're meant to protect the wearer from something spraying them in the face from straight on. But as you will be sitting with your head just below the visor, they actually propel any droplets from the mouth or nose straight down to your face. I would ask a hairdresser not to wear one, just a normal mask, and yes, I'd take my own mask too.

@mindutopia my hairdresser has asthma, so struggles to wear a mask all the time and wears a visor instead.

But in answer to the original question, I would wear a mask. I'm fairly gung ho about coronavirus, but with the hairdresser you are in close proximity for at least half an hour so it seems sensible to minimise the risk.

Anyway, I just felt a bit uncomfortable when she said she didn’t mind - in other words, I thought she’d think I’m being a bit silly wearing a mask when she must think there isn’t a need to (there is a need to of course which is why I’m wearing one)

She was giving you an option. That doesn’t imply judgement either way.

My hairdresser said masks are mandatory, so I wore one.

When I got there barely anyone else (clients) were in one, some were even just taking them off partially through.

I'm currently at the hairdressers. Arrived with my mask as I assumed I had to wear it. Hairdresser said official guidance they have received is that customers don't need to as the hairdressers are in full PPE. So I didn't wear it. I'm thoroughly confused about the rules now!

Masks are NOT mandatory for places like hairdressers. They have even listed all the places that do not require them on the news channels and websites and hairdressers is one of them.

Your hairdresser was giving you the option of wearing one of not. I don't think there was any implied judgement in it.

I didn't wear one for mine because I didn't want to and my hairdresser was the same as yours. But if you believe they are useful why would you feel silly?

If you can wear a mask I would be wearing one at a hairdressers. I am amazed they aren’t making it mandatory for customers unless they fall within an exemption. Bearing in mind the mask is mainly to protect them not the customer. So out of common courtesy I would wear one as a customer.

@mindutopia hairdressers and beauty therapists are wearing visors as that is gov guidlines as in mandatory, not masks visors and it is not mandatory for clients to wear masks.

Remember aswell that your hairdresser is probably suffering financially after months of being closed. She won’t want to be losing any customers. By saying ‘you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to’ she’s probably trying to avoid people cancelling because they’d find it difficult to sit for potentially hours in a mask. She’s in a fairly difficult situation. Why immediately assume she’s judging you?

Wow! I had a 3 hour appointment and if people hadn't been wearing masks, I'd have left. It's really rude not to without a genuine reason.

My salon is asking all customers to wear masks - can't say I blame them as they get close to you.

Yesterday I was allowed to remove while waiting for my highlights to work as my hairdresser wasn't near me. I wore it for putting them in, washing and cutting and it was fine. I did ask if she had snipped any and she said no!

My hairdresser wore a face shield, gloves and disposable apron, took my temperature when I arrived.

Washed my hair I also wore disposable apron.
Apparently not allowed to blow dry
I was fine with that as hair was nearly dry when she finished.
As it's only a small salon it was only me and the hairdresser in there.
