Hairdresser and face masks

Hi

So I am going to the hairdresser next week for the first time since February 😨.

My hairdresser rang me yesterday and briefed me on what procedures will be in place and what I should expect when I attend my appointment next week.

She said she will be wearing full PPE (obviously) but she said I can bring my own mask or she can provide me with one when I get there but she also said it doesn’t bother her if I don’t want to wear a mask at all.

I had already planned to bring my own mask and wear it - it seems the right thing to do as I have a part to play too in keeping the risk of infection down.

I know I’m totally being silly, but will I be seen as being OTT if I do bring my own mask considering she’s basically said that she doesn’t care if I don’t wear a mask?

@BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou

Salons have every right to specify additional requirements on top of the statutory requirements. Just like clubs can say “no jeans” and shoes can say “shirts must be worn” a salon can say that customers have to wear masks.

No one is disputing that. But they are on top of and not minimum requirements.

The OP actually wants to wear a mask which is perfectly fine. Clearly her hairdresser isn't one of them that insists on a mask but the OP could choose to find one that does just like someone could choose to find one that doesn't.

Oh I thought you had to wear a face covering at hairdresser.
I did last week, and everyone else did too (beauty salon where people were having pedicures too)
I wore my own mask.

I own a salon.

The guidelines are that o my the hairdresser has to wear a visor, clients don't have to wear a mask unless they choose too! Some salons are still making their clients wear a mask though.
We can absolutely still blow dry hair, some salons aren't to save time and book more clients in.

My salon are saying masks must be worn. I was reminded to take a spare as the colour would ruin the first one...

While the colour was being applied I held the mask over my face and then looped it over my ears while it was taking, I took my own book and drink as they aren’t allowed magazines or to serve refreshments, I unlooped the mask and held it over my nose and mouth during the washing, cutting, Blow drying. Stylist was wearing a visor, plastic apron and gloves. The gowns were their usual ones but they have always used clean gowns for every customer anyway. My temperature was taken when I arrived and there was a hand sanitiser dispenser at the door.

Just had my hair done today. I wore a mask but the staff weren't even though they had full ppe last week. They said new guidelines said staff didn't have to wear them!

Is the reason for not hair drying just in case someone is breathing out virus droplets and blow drying would spread it across the salon?

I went to the hairdresser's last weekend with a mask on. My hairdresser said that I didn't have to but it seemed a courtesy to her and she didn't make me feel like an idiot for keeping it on.

I thought that was strange not to blow dry actually.

Because she washed my hair so it was clean
Hmmmm strange one that

In the news in hairdressers I saw them being blow dryer.

Yeah I think your right I think some hairdressers are making there own rules.
As long as we all stay safe that's the main thing.

Apparently not allowed to blow dry

If in England it seems hairdressers are adding rules as masks are not mandatory and everyone was getting their hair blow dried in all the ones near me.

I also wore a mask

My hairdresser wore a face shield, gloves and disposable apron, took my temperature when I arrived.

Washed my hair I also wore disposable apron.
Apparently not allowed to blow dry
I was fine with that as hair was nearly dry when she finished.
As it's only a small salon it was only me and the hairdresser in there.

I preferred it tbh

My salon is asking all customers to wear masks - can't say I blame them as they get close to you.

Yesterday I was allowed to remove while waiting for my highlights to work as my hairdresser wasn't near me. I wore it for putting them in, washing and cutting and it was fine. I did ask if she had snipped any and she said no!

Wow! I had a 3 hour appointment and if people hadn't been wearing masks, I'd have left. It's really rude not to without a genuine reason.

Remember aswell that your hairdresser is probably suffering financially after months of being closed. She won’t want to be losing any customers. By saying ‘you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to’ she’s probably trying to avoid people cancelling because they’d find it difficult to sit for potentially hours in a mask. She’s in a fairly difficult situation. Why immediately assume she’s judging you?

@mindutopia hairdressers and beauty therapists are wearing visors as that is gov guidlines as in mandatory, not masks visors and it is not mandatory for clients to wear masks.

If you can wear a mask I would be wearing one at a hairdressers. I am amazed they aren’t making it mandatory for customers unless they fall within an exemption. Bearing in mind the mask is mainly to protect them not the customer. So out of common courtesy I would wear one as a customer.

I thought it was compulsory that client and hairdresser wear a mask.

Masks are NOT mandatory for places like hairdressers. They have even listed all the places that do not require them on the news channels and websites and hairdressers is one of them.

Your hairdresser was giving you the option of wearing one of not. I don't think there was any implied judgement in it.

I didn't wear one for mine because I didn't want to and my hairdresser was the same as yours. But if you believe they are useful why would you feel silly?

I'm currently at the hairdressers. Arrived with my mask as I assumed I had to wear it. Hairdresser said official guidance they have received is that customers don't need to as the hairdressers are in full PPE. So I didn't wear it. I'm thoroughly confused about the rules now!

My hairdresser said masks are mandatory, so I wore one.

When I got there barely anyone else (clients) were in one, some were even just taking them off partially through.

She was giving you an option. That doesn’t imply judgement either way.

I will be wearing a mask. I had planned to anyway. I thought it was compulsory that client and hairdresser wear a mask.

Anyway, I just felt a bit uncomfortable when she said she didn’t mind - in other words, I thought she’d think I’m being a bit silly wearing a mask when she must think there isn’t a need to (there is a need to of course which is why I’m wearing one)

But in answer to the original question, I would wear a mask. I'm fairly gung ho about coronavirus, but with the hairdresser you are in close proximity for at least half an hour so it seems sensible to minimise the risk.
