What do people get out of filming their normal days and publicising it?

I’ve seen this sort of thing on YouTube but this is prompted by a video I’ve just seen. A local news page has posted a time lapse video of a wealthy local woman (who appears to have shares in Ikea) going through her normal routine of looking after her twins. I’m not sure why it’s “news”, but I’m even less sure why she filmed it, let alone posted it anywhere. It’s just a very normal day. Wake babies, change babies, feed babies, get dressed, go to park, have lunch, put babies to sleep, work out (in home gym!) take in laundry, pick daddy up, have dinner, put babies to bed. That’s it. A perfectly normal day in the life of a SAHM. (Made ten times easier by the huge space and gardens of her home, and all the play equipment they have.) Why would anyone video that and think others would want to see it?

Because a lot of people feel validated by how many views and likes they get 🤷🏻‍♀️

One of my friends daughters does ‘haul’ videos of ordinary stuff from B&M and Superdrug. I feel like I’m 107 when she posts them.

Nothing to add except that it also baffles me (and slightly pisses me off for some reason!)

Isn’t the question more “why do people watch this?”.

They want attention and validation. I get why people do it. I don’t get why people watch it though? Escapism I suppose.

As for why I watched the video. The news page had a caption along the lines of “think you’re busy? check out this.” So I was expecting something incredibly amazing to happen. Not sure what exactly. But it was just a very mundane day of looking after Dc that happens in every other house every day.

But people love to watch made in Chelsea, only way is Essex, geordie shore, kaedashians etc which are all people going about their lives (however contrived) so clearly people do enjoy watching this though I agree it's odd!

Because some people do want to see it judging by the vast number of views/people who watch/subscribe to these things. Demand and supply....there's a "market" for everyone.

I've given up trying to figure it out because you can't. People like what they like and that's okay. Personally, I don't watch or follow anyone. MN is my only social media.

Ahh but all those shows are very drama heavy. I don’t watch them but have seen some of them in the past. They’re all staged to entertain. Arguments, cheating, marriages etc. They’re very much not just normal day to day life.

I think it’s mixture of;

a way of making themselves immortal, by recording the fact they lived. Similar to Victorians and photography around that time.

Seeking validation, an audience, a need to be seen and not be invisible.

Narcissism. A need to make others inspired/jealous/just for any reaction at all.

Psychologically I find it fascinating. But no way would I sit watching this shit.

I think this could be it. Particularly if the woman worked before kids and has lost that whole aspect of their life. There’s no-one crediting you for a job well done when you’re at home with babies. Possibly also a boredom element.

Also because being an influencer is aspirational and has the potential to earn freebies and even advertising revenue. So people start videoing stuff in an attempt to become an influencer

Meh i have screamy twins, a 5 yo and no space, watching someone live better version of my life sounds depressing.

Yes that’s kind of my point sleeping. This woman is probably raising twins in just about the easiest circumstances it’s possible to raise them, other than having a nanny to help her, (there was someone else with her at the park but I assumed a friend) which judging by her home, she could easily afford. The fact she doesn’t have a nanny suggests she isn’t finding raising her twins too hard. So what’s the point of her video? there are so many raising children in much harder circumstances than she is. I can’t see what is to praise about what she is doing.

They know there are plenty of saddos like me out there who'll watch the videos! I wonder how many of them go into because they see it as a way to potentially make money at some point down the line and how many of them do it for some other reason.

Their channels are monetized, 'day in the life' videos can get big views.

There was a community on lj way back called something like a day in the life, and members would do a photojournal of their day on a particular date. It was really interesting tbh, and none of them were ever particularly exciting days where loads happened. It was just little peeks into normal lives.

Why do people write diaries or autobiographies or blogs or have Instagram or snapchat or facebook?

Anyway, in the current age some people become millionaires through filming their kids opening toys or themselves playing computer games, it's not hard to see why people might want in on the fame and fortune. Not my cup of tea but given all the actual shit happening in the world, not something I can get all that worked up over either.

Ok, what is it you enjoy about watching it? The video I saw is just a very ordinary day that is repeated up and down the country in every home with small children. but sped up. Is it that you don’t have children so like watching what its like?

I quite enjoy the odd 'haul' video.

Also enjoy time-lapse videos of people tidying up.

Am I a freak?

Tidying up videos I can understand. Something happens I those. You see the before, and you see the after. You see how they achieve it and they are a bit of motivation if your own house needs cleaned.

I watch things like this. I can't have children and I like watching what day to day life might have been like. Plus, I like people watching in general, I love sitting outside with a drink sometimes and just watching people go about their lives.

It can make huge amounts of money too. Vlogs are huge on YouTube and get massive views. Vlogmas is one of my favourite times on YouTube.

I think that some people watch these videos to see what life is like in other countries. Raising twins in the UK may be very different to raising them in China, India or Uganda and people like to see what life is like in other cultures.

I feel like this about mummy bloggers. Or anyone calling themselves 'mama' or worse, 'mummy'. I get that for some mums, parenting can be daunting and they may worry they are doing things wrong and need advice, but honestly, what can a blogger tell you that you can't find out on a forum or by Googling? Most of the time it's just stories about homeschooling, weaning, school achievements or a day out. Things that perhaps are only of interest to the bloggers family? It's not new and most of them act as if they're the first person to have a child. The majority of parents manage just fine without this stuff. I just find it odd that anyone would want to see Mummyof5 talking about her life and her kids.
