What do people get out of filming their normal days and publicising it?

I’ve seen this sort of thing on YouTube but this is prompted by a video I’ve just seen. A local news page has posted a time lapse video of a wealthy local woman (who appears to have shares in Ikea) going through her normal routine of looking after her twins. I’m not sure why it’s “news”, but I’m even less sure why she filmed it, let alone posted it anywhere. It’s just a very normal day. Wake babies, change babies, feed babies, get dressed, go to park, have lunch, put babies to sleep, work out (in home gym!) take in laundry, pick daddy up, have dinner, put babies to bed. That’s it. A perfectly normal day in the life of a SAHM. (Made ten times easier by the huge space and gardens of her home, and all the play equipment they have.) Why would anyone video that and think others would want to see it?

'Mumma', not Mummy

@Kpo58

I think that some people watch these videos to see what life is like in other countries. Raising twins in the UK may be very different to raising them in China, India or Uganda and people like to see what life is like in other cultures.
That’s interesting!

One of my friends does this.
However she has been ill for many years and is mostly house bound.
She posts a lot of things that she does during the day, crafts, baking etc. It may be mundane and pointless to most people but for my mate it's her way if communicating and keeping in touch with the outside world.

@Smallsteps88 I think I'm just a bit nosy. I like seeing how other people live their lives. You might be on to something with the kids thing - I don't have any myself and am interested in seeing what life is like with babies/small children.

I used to enjoy watching these videos to see what 'normal' women wore, or what makeup they used, or what meals they cook, or how they decorate their houses. It felt like a good way to get achievable ideas because things promoted by magazines, celebrities etc. aren't realistically possible for most people. Nowadays I assume anything being recommended in a video by someone who has more than about 200 subscribers is sponsored, but I still enjoy watching videos for little bits of inspiration, even if I have be a bit cynical about anything being recommended.

I also don't have many friends so perhaps it's just a way of having a window into the lives of other people and feeling somehow involved.

Are you saying we shouldn’t discuss what other people do on SM here?

No I'm not.

Great. I’ll carry on discussing it then.

For me its a bit of mindless escapism. I find it fascinating seeing what people do in a day, how their houses look etc. I don't have sisters or close female friends to pick up on makeup/fashion/life tips and I desperately want a family but haven't had any success TTC yet so I find it interesting looking at a day in the life.
