SWIMMING! I'm grinning like a loon!

Just been swimming for the first time in 4 months. Ooh! I feel like I'm drunk or something. It was a bit annoying really - quite regimented, no showers, not my normal pool - but I haven't really felt like this all through lockdown.

Don't know why I'm sharing really... Has anyone else just done something they'd really really missed and looked forward to?

I'm going on Saturday, open air pool at my gym. Very excited. We're able to use changing rooms etc. they've just said be quick.

fartyface · 21/07/2020 07:17

I was one of the last ones in the water at my gym. I remember a very strange and defiant swim in an empty pool just knowing it was going to be my last for a while.

I am so glad I went.

dementedma · 21/07/2020 07:23

@sopanny no didnt have a wetsuit but my dd does a lot of wild swimming in Scotland and swears by hers. I was only splashing about so not on fir very long

Ledkr · 21/07/2020 08:20

We have been going to a lake to swim. Dd missed it so much so i bought her a wetsuit and she looked in heaven the first time she went.
Our open air pool is not allowing kids in.

lljkk · 21/07/2020 17:53

My pool hasn't announced anything definite yet. Not boding confidence for this Friday to be reopen day.

confusednortherner · 21/07/2020 20:36

Ds is desperate to get back in the pool he's gone from 4 days a week to occasional dips in giant paddling pool and couple of open water swims. Leisure centre not opening for the foreseeable future but we are booked in to outdoor pool tomorrow, I'm even looking forward to it but worried about temperature!

Poetryinaction · 21/07/2020 21:14

Swimming is the best. I joined a lake, bought a wetsuit and started open water swimming in lockdown. I've made fantastic friends. I also bought a big framed pool for the garden so the kids aren't missing out either. We really should live by the coast, but where there's a will, there's a way.

@KittyFantastico

I wonder if it differs from pool to pool. Our local leisure centre haven't put a time limit on changing other than "arrive with your costume under your clothes" and "get dried and dressed as quickly as possible afterwards". They're allowing showers before and after but they will be a maximum of 60 seconds. All the cubicles and lockers are numbered, you have to use the locker number that corresponds to your cubicle. All your belongings go in your locker for security but once you're ready to swim you have to tell the changing room staff and they will lock your cubicle from the outside so that no one else can use it. After you've swam and have gotten changed, the now empty locker and cubicle will both be cleaned ready for the next person to use them.

I cannot wait to go swimming again! The changing room rules make so much sense to me and I want them to be this way forever because I get so much rage over grubby floors, dumped swim nappies, and the only available locker being miles from the cubicle I've used.

You have just described what swimming was like for me the 60s!

We had a brand new indoor pool. Two ladies in the changing area that showed you to a cubicle and sorted your locker space. They kept the place immaculate- perhaps we need to go back to the olds ways in many things now.

The only update from my local pool so far is there will be some sort of booking system, no walk ins. But beyond that no more information.

BikeRunSki · 22/07/2020 22:13

Our local pool is being used as a COVID testing centre, so I’m not holding my breath.

ListeningQuietly · 22/07/2020 22:16

I plan to be in the water at my pool by 9am Saturday .....
and Sunday
and Monday
and Tuesday
and Wednesday
etc Grin

DamnYouAutocucumber · 22/07/2020 22:23

I went to the beach on a cold, drizzly day and had a lovely swim in the sea. I appreciate I'm very lucky to be able to do this though.
Both our local outdoor pools have confirmed they're not open this year, as they can't make the figures work. I understand their difficulties, but it doesn't leave many other options!

CherryPavlova · 22/07/2020 22:26

I’ve been in the sea everyday this week. Just heavenly.

SoPanny · 22/07/2020 22:31

Just bought a wetsuit and swim cap off the Internet thanks to this thread; not even joking

CMOTDibbler · 22/07/2020 22:39

My local leisure centre pool is now having maintenance done and won't be open till October. But I've been getting in two lake swims a week every week which is great (I normally travel a lot for work) and have booked those through to September now.
When I go back to the pool, I'll wear my dryrobe there and back. I just pull my cossie off under it at the lake and pull some merino leggings on anyway, so not much difference

roarfeckingroar · 22/07/2020 23:05

I can't wait to submerge my huge pregnant body in water this weekend Grin

aibutohavethisusername · 23/07/2020 00:58

Went back for my first swim, outdoor pool today. Booked again for tomorrow & Friday.

NameChange2PostThis · 23/07/2020 01:09

@blueirises I think we may have been to the same pool. Grin
I was genuinely tearful for the first few minutes of swimming - I have missed swimming so much and a heated outdoor pool in the sunshine is bliss. Going back tomorrow.

blueirises · 23/07/2020 16:57

@NameChange2PostThis - does it begin with an H?

OP posts:
BikeRunSki · 23/07/2020 17:05

@blueirises - I’m very envious if you’ve been to the H pool (in D County, near S city) I’m thinking over. Keep missing slots, now I’m working too much. Going lake swimming with the mum of a friend of DS’s tomorrow though.

blueirises · 23/07/2020 17:28

@ BikeRunSki, no, this one's in south west London. Carol Kirkwood has several times done the BBC Breakfast weather from there. It's a really nice pool, but with a slightly odd 36m length. I'm sure a lake will be lovely - enjoy it!

MinnieMountain · 23/07/2020 17:46

I managed a sea swim 2 weeks ago. It felt like heaven.

They've just announced that our main council pool will be opening in August.

Lake swimming starts next Thursday Grin Changing rooms not guaranteed but I really really don't care. I'll cycle home in my gym to swim stuff and a hoodie if I have to.

LunaNorth · 23/07/2020 17:47

I’m going to a nearby lake that does open-air swimming next week and I cannot WAIT.

BikeRunSki · 24/07/2020 17:14

Been out with a local outdoor /wild swimming group this afternoon. Just brilliant. I loved it.

confusednortherner · 24/07/2020 23:25

I've swam twice this week purely for ds benefit because I didn't think he was old enough to go in lido himself. I'm actually considering keeping it up for myself!
