Solo trip- where would you go?

Hi everyone!
I am hoping to take myself on holiday somewhere next year. I'll be on my own, and it'll be a part of 'don't wait for love, just do it and be your best friend' mantra I have been trying to live by. I've taken myself out on dates, went on numerous day trips but I think it's time to move up a level. I've not been abroad for a few years and am itching to go ( if everything is ok next year)

I'm hoping to travel for a week, next July.

I'd love some peace and quiet, some sun and to feel safe.

Has anyone here done a solo trip that they would recommend/not recommend? Or, where would you go?

I'd appreciate your experiences in this

I am planning on doing the same - this summer in the UK, maybe abroad next year.

There are solo excursion groups you can book onto.

Brexit will change travel to Europe - but nice city breaks like Prague, Bruges or Vienna.

Or further afield - a tour of the Rockies, or boating in the Maldives. It depends on your budget.

Travel agents can help with ideas and an itinerary. Think where you would like to go, what level of comfort, and your personal safety when travelling alone.

Can’t guarantee the sun but if you want peace and mind blowing scenery - Orkney

I'd like to stay in one place ideally and to be in a more rural/coastal area- away from the hustle and bustle. I assume it's safer that way too.
I don't think I can afford luxury- less than £1000 all in

I suppose locations is what I'm most keen on and unfortunately I don't think it's going to be in the UK. Possibly Europe? Although Orkney does look lovely- not warm enough I'm afraid! :)

I have every intention of doing this as soon as dd is old enough to leave alone for a week. I have in mind Bali or similar for a yoga retreat. Closer to home, I would go somewhere warm like a Greek island.

For me I’d probably go for Mykonos.

I’ve been to several Greek islands and it’s the one for me that I’ve always felt I’d love to go back and visit solo as it feels safe and welcoming.

I am dreaming of a few solo trips:
Sri Lanka
Naples
Salzburg

Would recommend Vienna and Florence.

A yoga retreat in Bali sounds delightful. I've looked into yoga retreats and would love to go on one- the ones I looked at looked quite expensive- but I can imagine them being so serene and lovely.

@SoPanny have you been to Santorini? I haven't, if you have, have you got any thoughts on it?

Las Vegas is great for solo travellers as there's lots of people solo there in conferences etc. The hotels are amazing, lots of solo people eating in restaurants, buffets etc, great shows.

I've done many solo holidays. I prefer city holidays or somewhere exotic - but within your time/price range, I'd go for a tiny studio on a Greek island. Or maybe Lisbon - lots to see/do, lovely food and day trips along the coast? All very easy by bus/train if you don't want to drive. You'll have a great time pleasing yourself - enjoy your independence!

I've done Amsterdam, Paris, Rome and Vienna on my own..

I’ve not been but my cousin went solo and she had a really nice time; she may have gone on a solo traveller group tour if that makes sense though, not sure if that’s something you’d consider?

Yoga retreats are great yoga on a shoestring do good ones. Their Kefalonia one has very basic accommodation but is set it a lovely location with two fabulous beaches.
Solo holidays are expensive though.

I'd go to one of the smaller Greek islands, maybe somewhere like Paxos. Very welcoming, safe and you wouldn't feel remotely out of place.

I went to Santorini in the 80s when it only had a tiny military airport. Hardly any tourists at all and it was wonderful. Think it's a very different place the days, expensive, cruise ships and heaving with tourists

SE Asia. Book a room with a family. They'll keep you safe. The website is called homestay and is very reasonable.

I did Rome and Naples. It was amazing but more of a touristy travelling trip.
For one place I would say a Greek island.

I've been making similar plans! I love solo travel.

I've been to Greece alone, some of the smaller islands and south west Crete are lovely. I'd love to go to Sardinia or Corsica or the Amalfi coast (which I could combine with a trip to Naples and an Elena Ferrante tour!) Yoga or meditation retreats are great but a rip off if you book from here, I'd just turn up in Thailand, Indonesian or Costa Rica and book something locally. City breaks I've loved: Vienna, Prague, Bratislava, Krakow, Lisbon...all time favourite was Madrid but if you want beach then Barcelona also lovely.

Question to other solo travelers: do you like to meet others or keep to yourself? How do you meet others? Do you prefer tours or being independant? I haven't travelled for a few years and used to keep v much to myself but did get lonely at times so am wondering whether to shake things up

@RunningFromInsanity did you feel safe in Naples alone? I like to walk miles and miles exploring the city neighbourhoods, is this reasonable in Naples?

I flew out to Oz last year, but I did visit my daughter whilst I was there, and it's a bit tricky to fit into a week's holiday!

If you've only got a week, you don't want to travel too far or you spend most of your time in transit or preparing for transit. What about Slovenia - it's the most beautiful place I've ever been (and the weather was amazing).

I regularly go to Turkey on my own. To Olu Deniz or Hisaronu. Plenty of people but not often large groups of party people getting excessively drunk.
I have always felt very safe.

And it is pretty cheap too. I have done 2 weeks for less than £250 once I was comfortable there and happy booking flights and hotels separately.

PS Have a look at Samos - direct flights - I stayed at Kokkari which was lovely. Nice little 3* family-run hotel on the beach and lots of restaurants in the village. Lovely walks in the surrounding countryside - fields of poppies, but that was earlier than you're planning, maybe May. I remember making a day trip to Ephesus (Turkey) by ferry which to be honest wasn't worth the expense of port fees etc although it was very interesting.

I'd go to Lindos in Rhodes- lovely accommodation, lots to potter about and look at, can get a bus to Rhodes town. It's very hot in July though - May or June would work better. Try exclusively Lindos.

Italy is an idea! Has anyone here been to the Lakes?

Santorini is v coupley that's right. I'd like to avoid that as best as I can :)

My friend ran yoga retreats in Portugal, most people who go travel solo. It was £500 full board including yoga excluding flights to give to an idea. She's stopped due to pregnancy but there's others doing similar, ideal for solo travelers
