What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

Boiling full fat coke in a burnt pan also works to remove the 'burn marks'

GisAFag · 18/07/2020 07:59

@Covert19

Burying a cat in the foundations of a new house brings you luck.
Wish Stephen King did that instead of in the Micmac burial ground Pet Sematary would have been far less scary
LunaNorth · 18/07/2020 07:59

If you have a burnt pan, simmer a dishwasher tablet in it.

Put lemon juice on a stain, then leave the article to dry in the sun. DS rescued a white top from a tomato pasta sauce stain using this method. It took a couple of goes, but it worked.

Hiccups - lie on the floor and drink water from a bottle. End of.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 18/07/2020 08:21

I saw this on Richard and Judy years ago. If kids have hiccups, you get a little bit of tissue, lick it and stick it to their forehead. I have tried this with all mine (usually in embarrassing places, like the train) and it works.

whenwillthemadnessend · 18/07/2020 08:22

This thread is fab Smile

fishandchops · 18/07/2020 08:29

@SlightyJaded

For hiccups, I drink a glass of water whilst holding my nose. I have to take at least three 'gulps' and swallows, and without fail the hiccups are gone. I read that this is something to do with creating a vacuum but I am not sure. It might even be a kind of 'placebo' technique but I've been doing it for years and completely believe in it. DD and DS now do it and it works for them too.

I am excited to try:

Coin/taps thing
Cleaning windows solution
and
Boiling water on weeds.

I do this too, totally works every time. Tried it on my 4 year old but it must have gone down the wrong way he ended up being sick but the hiccups went 😂

@Piratetree I always order slightly too much paint, then keep the tin for touch ups! Also use Dulux Easycare which is washable and makes the marks much easier to get off. Not really a life tip, but it works!

KetoPenguin · 18/07/2020 08:34

If you have a dripping tap, tie a piece of string round so the drips run down the string, this has been useful during lockdown when it was hard to get a plumber.

Pipandmum · 18/07/2020 08:42

Got this from MN just the other day: to stop chocolate chips or blueberries etc sinking to the bottom of your cake (or in my case banana bread) roll in flour first. Worked great!

Piratetree · 18/07/2020 08:44

Thanks @AltheaVestr1t we do have paint for touch ups Smile

fairydustandpixies · 18/07/2020 08:47

I came in to say about the coins in a bag. I don't have any of those clear bags so put coins in a glass of water.

Yep, definitely works. No flies on me! 😁

fodderbeet · 18/07/2020 08:52

Anyone else wondering how to effectively attach a small bag of water with coins in it to a horse?

Mawbagz · 18/07/2020 09:07

My ultimate favourite is a hydrogen Peroxide...

Obliterates: blood, sick, wee and poo stains and smell because it kills the bacteria on contact and release oxygen which then turns it into a big frothy patch. Stains disappear.

You need to do it before washing aforementioned bloody or sicky items.

@borntobequiet... this kind of ties in with what you were saying

goingtotown · 18/07/2020 09:15

Spray hairspray on cards with annoying loose glitter.

TroysMammy · 18/07/2020 09:15

Does the tongue touching the roof of your mouth to stop crying work when chopping onions? I've tried every tip which has never worked. My eyes even smart when watching a chef on tv chop them. I now whizz up loads in my food processor to freeze so I only get one lot of tears.

The coins in a bag of water didn't keep flies away but turned them rusty and unusable.

TroysMammy · 18/07/2020 09:17

Baby oil cleans and shines chrome.

SconNotScone · 18/07/2020 09:26

I read somewhere that removing marks from the inside of a cast iron casserole dish can be done by rubbing a dishwasher tablet on the marks. I tried it on my Le Creuset casserole, which had a lot of dark marks inside, I got the inside of the pan wet, and rubbed vigorously with a dishwasher tablet. As the tablet disintegrated, I used a washing up sponge (the rough side) to give it a final scrub, and rinsed away. Almost as good as new! Had never managed to get it that clean before with washing up liquid or by putting it in the dishwasher.

Graphista · 18/07/2020 09:27

Rubbing your tongue on the roof of your mouth stops you crying. and sneezing too.

Generally not good to always stifle sneezes but useful when you really need to

If you get a bit of shell in your egg after cracking it, wet your fingers with a bit of water and you’ll be able to pick it up instead of it swishing around in the slimy egg white! far easier to use the rest of the shell to scoop it out, acts like a magnet! It's quite something to see

Tin openers have a bit on them to help remove air pressure If you have trouble with jars. Look for a curved, hooked part of the tin opener, either near the tin opener part or on the leg. You hook the lid and pull up releasing air and making it easy to open. think that's actually meant to be a bottle opener

I pierce jar lids with a sharp knife, just stab it! Jar then opens easily usually. If it does still stick I'll use a rubber glove.

If anyone has one to get the greasy marks off walls where dc have splattered food etc baby powder, baby wipes sometimes work too

fairyfingers · 18/07/2020 09:28

Just this morning I made one of those Pinterest/insta paleo gluten free sugar free pancakes recipes.

Normally these seem to descend into pointless tasteless mush. These were actually nice!

Chilly567 · 18/07/2020 09:34

This thread is amazing! I've already used the WD40 on sticky residue successfully.

Anyone got any clever tips for removing scratches from double glazed windows??

Tanaqui · 18/07/2020 09:39

@fairyfingers, would you mind sharing the recipe?!

lifesalongsong · 18/07/2020 09:41

@lopdedop

Use a marigold washing up glove on hard to open jars. So easy. The wooden spoon trick works most of the time, too. Rubber gloves to remove pet hair from sofas/car interior is brilliant too.
Does it have to be Marigold? I usually buy own brand rubber gloves, is the extra price worth it?

I'm not sure I get what the tip is, is it buy one more tin of paint than you know you need or do you mean you paint you whole house the same colour and have one extra tin?

I've been doing some lockdown decorating and it would be very expensive to buy an extra tin for each different room.
