What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

Same as above on stains, except handwash gel, shampoo or shower gel work too. When I take off something with an oil splash on it I squeeze a little handsoap on it before I throw it in the hamper. When I wash the item the next day the stain is gone.

When reversing into a parking spot (parallel parking on a residential road) as I reverse and turn in looking behind, I mentally try to line up my car with the car behind's headlights or rear lights - just thinking of the position of the lights seems to help hugely (they don't have to be lit). Try it if you usually struggle! I think I heard this on MN a long time ago.

@TheHandStandBand

I have a 3 year old toddler who never wants to get dressed as she never wants to put on any of the clothes I choose for her, and instead wants to put on something else (usually inappropriate for the weather like shorts in January). Insistence of putting on my choice of clothing was leading to full on tantrums and leaving the house was becoming a nightmare. Advised to try the technique of picking out two suitable items (e.g, a choice of two jumpers in winter) and letting her pick her favourite to wear. It works! She happily picks one of the outfits to wear and it's far less stressful as she feels she is the one to have chosen her outfit, and I know she's wearing something suitable

Yes I do this, literally on everything....cups colours, snack options....eveeything. Saves so much time and stress!

This never worked for my dd. She always wanted something else but couldn’t choose.

Oh, if you have any tarnished costume jewellery you can get this liquid silver stuff that you rub on like polish and buff off -looks like new! Beautiful New silver jewellery! Works on items that were once gold coloured or brass etc too - turns them silver. You can also use it on real silver to polish it. Genius!

Can I use the foil/bicarbonate of soda/boiling water method on a pandora bracelet with glass/crystal charms or will it bugger it up?

iknowimcoming · 19/07/2020 19:07

Cooking one - when preparing fresh live mussels, soak them in a bowl of cold water with a splash of malt vinegar in for 5 minutes before de-bearding them, it makes them spit out all their grit

Talcum powder kills ants.... like magic

Paracetamol did bugger all for my iron!!

SunshineCake · 19/07/2020 19:13

@scotx

If you have a piece of carpet that's been flattened and indented from heavy furniture sitting on it, soak a J cloth in water and place it over the indented patch. Then iron over the cloth and the steam from the iron will bring your flat patch up all nice and fluffy again. Just make sure the iron never touches the carpet directly, always have the cloth between the iron and carpet.
Or use ice cubes. No risk of burning then.

Any tips for oven doors?
Scrub with a dishwasher tablet.

Hull a strawberry by pushing a straw through from the bottom to the top of the strawberry.

Get rid of black mould on bathroom sealant by soaking toilet roll in bleach and leaving it on the mould for about 12 hours.

Clean bathroom light pull cord by coating cotton wool or toilet paper in bleach,wrap around the cord and wrap with cling film,leave for a few hours. Then give a scrub to get the bleach off.

If you can't open a jar,stab a hole in the lid to release the pressure.

Get rid of hiccups by downing a drink through a straw whilst blocking your ears with your fingers-sounds random bit a school nurse showed me this 15 years ago,never failed me!

I know this is probably known by everyone now,but use the hole in the handle of pans to put your wooden spoon in whilst cooking.

Get your whites really white by adding sterilising fluid to your wash. Just don't put anything with colour in with it as it'll bleach and fade it!

Clean scuffs off white trainers using cif cream. Great for the sides of the soles, nothing else works as well

Removing limescale from taps with a 2p piece. Incredible

Bluetrews25 · 19/07/2020 19:34

Don't want to use tumble dryer sheets?
Cut up a J cloth into a few pieces, fold into a small pad just bigger than the mouth of your fabric conditioner bottle. Put over bottle opening, invert briefly, throw cloth in dryer with the laundry. (So it's got a disc of the liquid on it, not massively soaked). No tangles or static, nice smell, cheap. Re-use the cloth over and over.

Not really a tip but bitter grout cleaner is magic. You can get it from Homebase, spray it on and leave for 10 minutes and scrub with a nail brush which gets all the bits off. Afterwards mop and over the next hour or so the grout whitens. It's honestly like magic.

Does anyone know how to get grease and dirt stains out of very soft feel leather. I have a lovely beige soft feel bag, but only used it a few times as it looks so grubby now.

titnomatani · 19/07/2020 19:49

Filthy toilet (thanks to the builders having a free for all when we were out), pop a dishwashing tablet in the toilet and leave overnight- gentle scrub with a toilet brush and it comes out looking beautiful!

MommyR · 19/07/2020 19:50

Mix some fabric conditioner ( one of your faves) with some Luke warm water in a spray bottle spray the inside of your curtains with it and when you have your windows open it blows a continuous smell of freshness round your room 🥰
