Do you think it is rude to ask someone if they would consider moving their van when it has been parked outside your house for weeks?

Just that really. There is a tall van parked on the street directly outside my house (terraced street free parking) so when I look out of the window that is all I can see.

So I rang the number of the business on the side of the van and asked the person if she would consider moving it now. Her attitude was she doesn't have to and I was rude to ask. My attitude she is rude to not even consider my polite request.

What do you think? Yes, she's done nothing illegal but do you think she has been inconsiderate or not?

Of course it's not unreasonable to ask. And it was rude of her to refuse. All she has to do is repark 3 metres down the road.

Yes, it would be a bit different if there is limited parking. Otherwise, it's pretty rude if you made a polite request.

Technically you don't own the road outside your house, the council does.
I've had the same happen to me outside where I live, I don't have a designated parking spot, but I like to park outside my house for ease of carrying in shopping etc, and constantly random cars parking there. It's incredibly annoying but unfortunately there's nothing you can do, just hope that she would have been accommodating and move her van.

I say this as somebody who can never find a parking spot outside my house and have to drive around the whole town looking for one, sometimes up to an hour. But I certainly don’t get annoyed if others park outside my house on a public road

I sympathise with your annoyance.

I have someone who does this occasionally - it really annoys me as it substitutes the pleasant view of 16th-century cottages from my home office window and substitutes it with an ugly high sided van. It also makes it difficult to reverse off my drive. If he parked 50m further up, he could park it nearer his house and the other neighbour has a high hedge so wouldn't be affected. He would, however, be looking straight out of his window at the van so maybe he doesn't want his own view ruined. I have never said anything as he has a right to park in the road but inwardly seethe and will park in the road for a few days as soon as he moves the van.

My neighbour parks within 2 inches of my driveway so he doesn’t have to look at his own car from his house. Makes it tricky to turn into my drive, but it’s not illegal so nothing I can do about. Bloody annoying though!

As long as it’s taxed, mot-ed & insured. Not in a disabled space without a badge or blocking a driveway or a junction there’s NOTHING you can do about it.

I don't think you were being unreasonable to ask. Legally, van driver isn't doing anything wrong, however a decent person would move a little bit further down the road if asked. Not being able to see anything from your window for weeks apart from a high sided parked vehicle is pretty annoying.

It’s not unreasonable to ask however they can say no.
As you’ve highlighted they are parked legally.

Where would the van move to? 3m down the road to piss someone else off? I guess what you could do is as soon as the van is moved as presumably it moves on occasion is put your car there or order a skip to sit in it's spot and then hopefully she'll get the hint

A polite request deserves a polite answer imo. Even if it is a polite no. Yanbu. Sadly we have to share this world with unnecessarily scratchy people.
You could try to be glad it's a van and not a giant barn like those poor people in the news the other day! 😁

It's not your land, therefore you have no right to ask them to move.

If you're that fussed then you move to a place that doesn't have public parking outside.
