Do you think it is rude to ask someone if they would consider moving their van when it has been parked outside your house for weeks?

Just that really. There is a tall van parked on the street directly outside my house (terraced street free parking) so when I look out of the window that is all I can see.

So I rang the number of the business on the side of the van and asked the person if she would consider moving it now. Her attitude was she doesn't have to and I was rude to ask. My attitude she is rude to not even consider my polite request.

What do you think? Yes, she's done nothing illegal but do you think she has been inconsiderate or not?

I have no right to ask them to move. I'm just asking them to move out of consideration. Surely life isn't just about rights and not? If you want to get along with your fellow citizens then you consider their experience, their feelings also?

What a black and white world some people live in.

Do you normally have a picturesque view out of your window that you are now being denied? If not, then (of course there was no need for the business owner to be rude) I think you are being a bit unreasonable. There was no harm in asking though I guess!

@Chicchicchicchiclana

You asked for opinions....

You live in a house with public parking outside. You should have factored a scenario like this into your thoughts when purchasing.

Yes, I asked for opinions. I don't mind hard line opinions but I do mind hard line opinions that ridicule people for having different opinions.

If you cannot ever negotiate with your neighbours over the occasional thing that impacts on you then you should live alone on an island ... is that what you're saying?

You do realise she's now going to park there all the time

Ha! No, I have a view of the road and the row of terraces opposite. But not a van side filling the whole of my window.

Interestingly, I think the owner of the van lives opposite and on this particular road where I live the houses opposite are built up on a steep slope (they all have quite a sizeable flight of steps up to them) so when they look out of their living room windows they see over our roof tops and onto panoramic views of London.

I obviously should have considered this when I moved here.

Yes, TheCanyon, sadly I can see this becoming some sort of pathetic tit for tat exercise.

Our neighbour has left him car in one of the 3 parking spaces for around 12 flats for the whole of lockdown and it’s the one right outside ours.

We’re having a skip delivered on Monday so I’m going to have to ask him to move it, feel a bit nervous now!

If it’s terraced housing, she’ll only block someone else’s window.

I’d be miffed if it was parked outside my house, but I don’t think it was rude of you to ask for her to shift, Shy folk get nowt.

Not unreasonable to ask.

My MiL lived in an old cottage with no front garden, just the pavement outside. She spent most of her time in the one room at the front as she got older.
A neighbour always parked his bright green van outside hers, not his, and it gave a ghastly green glow in the room as well as blocking the view!

We offered to have a word but she didn't want to cause a fuss.
I understand your frustration.

This reminds me of the time when someone left an Autoglass van right in front of my living room window for about three weeks. I got to know this man's face very well! When it eventually got moved, I felt a bit sad! It was like he'd become part of the family!

@FelicityPike

As long as it’s taxed, mot-ed & insured. Not in a disabled space without a badge or blocking a driveway or a junction there’s NOTHING you can do about it.

Technically if a disabled space has white lines around it, it's advisory not to park there not an offence.

OP You asked and she could have been polite and moved it for a bit.

I dont think you were rude to ask at all. Is there usually space outside their own house?

I feel your pain. We have a white van opposite our house that hasn't moved for 2 years give or take. Spoke to Council (I think) saying has been abandoned but apparently it has mot and tax and there is nothing anyone can do.

Totally reasonable to ask. We used to live in a street fronted cottage. There was only one window letting light into the main room and if a van was parked there then the whole downstairs was completely dark as well as having no view from the only window.

Is it her company or a large company. If it's hers put a review on her website about how inconsiderate she is.
Large company phone them up to ask her to move and report for being rude. Not a good advertisement for the company.

@TheCanyon I can't remember! I was mildly annoyed in the beginning but after a while we laughed about it. Use to say good morning to him when I opened the blinds!
I think he looks like me might be called Steve.

Not unreasonable to ask at all. My friend had a house which opened straight into the street. Some inconsiderate high-sided van driver would come and park his van outside her house everyday, plunging the living room into darkness.

She asked him if he could consider parking elsewhere some of the time, he said he couldn't park outside his own house as his wife didn't like the way it plunged the living room into darkness!

She told him to move it!
He got the message.

What sort of business is it? is it something you could book so that that they drive off so that you can put your car in its place?

I do agree with you, that obviously they are legally entitled to park there, but if it hasn't moved for weeks and is blocking your light and there is somewhere else they could easily move it to - it would be good of them to do so.

How you've escalated me saying you're being unreasonable to calling me an arsehole twice I've no idea.
Very bizarre behaviour
