Classic Film Recommendations

Hiccupiscal · 15/07/2020 18:26

So, over the weekend during a particularly horrible hangover i watched 3 Audrey Hepburn films - Breakfast at Tiffany's, Roman Holidays & Sabrina and i loved them all.
Such a change from the usual modern mindnumbing, cringe films I watch.

Followed it up the next day with 'Jane Eyre'

Really enjoyed that too.

....so now im looking for anymore 'classic' film recommendations? Bonus points if i can access them through NOW tv/Netflix..

Charade is one of my all time favourites

FishHasDied · 15/07/2020 19:11

Some Like It Hot - one of my favourites and that great final line ‘Well, nobody’s perfect’.

All About Eve - with the fabulous Bette Davis and the line ‘Fasten your seatbelts; it’s going to be a bumpy night’.

(Sorry Op - I know you asked for classic films not lines, but I do love both films).

FishHasDied · 15/07/2020 19:14

Also, Brief Encounter

Bloodylovecheese · 15/07/2020 19:15

Great Expectations 1946 version with John Mills

Davros · 15/07/2020 19:16

I assume the Titanic suggested above is the one starring Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck?
Have you discovered TalkingPics TV? 445 on Virgin. It's brilliant.
The Women (original)
All That Heaven Allows
Mildred Pierce
Mrs Miniver
Many Hitchcocks
Genevieve
Gaslight (very MN!)
Imitation of Life
Sullivan's Travels (all time favourite)
Reach for the Sky
Pillow Talk
Agree with Charade

Plenty more where those came from

Powerplant · 15/07/2020 19:22

Really old but The Wilmslow Boy, Goodbye Mr Chips and Goodnight Mr Tom

DrDavidBanner · 15/07/2020 19:34

What a great thread idea. I love old movies properly old movies, not ones I watched at the cinema when they first came out! and haven't watched one for a long while.

Some great suggestions here, I love Bette Davis, All Abut Eve and Now Voyager are great films. Some Like it Hot is one of my favourite films. Other films I love are;

Singin' in The Rain
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (infact anything with Jimmy Stewart in is worth watching)
Casablanca
The African Queen
The Apartment

I'm sure there's loads more that I've forgotten about.

AmandaHoldensLips · 15/07/2020 19:35

ALL ABOUT EVE

FelicityPike · 15/07/2020 19:36

An affair to remember.

TheSandman · 15/07/2020 19:41

in fact anything with Jimmy Stewart in is worth watching

Including Airport '77 ?! erm... no.

Double Indemnity.
Casablanca
The Maltese Falcon
Any 1930's Warner Brothers musical that had Busby Berkley's name in the credits - but Footlight Parade is THE best.

WindsorBlues · 15/07/2020 19:44

Mildred Pearce
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
Casablanca
Gone with the wind
Anything by Hitchcock

BitOfFun · 15/07/2020 19:45

The Woman In The Window
Rebecca

Anything pre-1950 with Barbara Stanwyck.

BitOfFun · 15/07/2020 19:46

I'm picking on the basis of easy availability- those two films are on YouTube.

AuntMasha · 15/07/2020 19:46

Black Narcissus

A Matter of Life and Death

The Red Shoes

AuntMasha · 15/07/2020 19:49

The Postman Always Rings Twice

Twelve Angry Men

Night of the Hunter

DrDavidBanner · 15/07/2020 19:52

Dr Zhivago is a great film too but you'll need a whole afternoon to watch it.

The Lavender Hill Mob, Kind Hearts and Coronets and The Lady Killers. Basically anything with Alec Guinness

Pavlova31 · 15/07/2020 20:33

Dead Of Night a 1945 horror film about the ghost stories of some guests staying overnight in an old farmhouse.
The ending has the stories all entwining together in an intriguing ending.
Or does it ? ...

Pavlova31 · 15/07/2020 20:39

The Halfway House (1944)
Another Ealing woo based story.

Hiccupiscal · 15/07/2020 20:40

Oh I am beyond excited at all the suggestions.
Many, many weeks of film watching for me Grin
I'm really trying to start a new habit of
Relaxing and unwinding with a film on an evening (rather than a bottle of something), tea and snacks....
Tonight I have chosen "Sense & Sensibility" and have my fingers crossed. Film was only 1995, but a classic story obviously, so hoping I enjoy it.

Really thankful to all the suggestions so far. Lots to be keeping me busy with!

Keep 'em coming!

(I was also baffled by the titanic suggestion, but im guessing a PP is correct in saying its not the famous 1999 Dicaprio film!)
