Classic Film Recommendations

So, over the weekend during a particularly horrible hangover i watched 3 Audrey Hepburn films - Breakfast at Tiffany's, Roman Holidays & Sabrina and i loved them all.
Such a change from the usual modern mindnumbing, cringe films I watch.

Followed it up the next day with 'Jane Eyre'

Really enjoyed that too.

....so now im looking for anymore 'classic' film recommendations? Bonus points if i can access them through NOW tv/Netflix..

The earlier versions of the Titanic story i remember are ...
A Night To Remember (1958)
Titanic (1953)

Awww, thats so lovely of you... thank you so much.

I didnt realise there was so many famous faces in the film! Im trying to get past seeing a huge mix of very "modern popular" faces in the film, which is making the time setting less believable to me (mostly Hugh Grant, due to films like "about a boy" and that awful Christmas film...... Love actually. Finding it hard to think of him for anything other than a bumbling English man)

Pavlova I watched Dead of Night when I was about 15 - over 30 years ago and it still terrifies me! 'Room for one more inside'
I would add Waterloo Bridge to the list of it hasn't already been mentioned? Love these old films.

Applesarenice · 15/07/2020 21:28

Some like it hot

The man who wasn’t there

Sunset boulevard (My fave!! ‘I’m ready for my close up’!!)

Secret garden is a good classic family friendly film that’s on Netflix

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/07/2020 21:31

The 39 Steps with Robert Donat.

BigRedBoat · 15/07/2020 21:33

Shenendoah
North by north west
Rear window

BigRedBoat · 15/07/2020 21:35

Also - Kind hearts and coronets and The mouse that roared

Pluckedpencil · 15/07/2020 21:37

Rear window is a masterpiece.

I also love Cinema Paradiso.

Dugheed · 15/07/2020 21:38

12 angry men
Madame x
Imitation of life

DearPrudence · 15/07/2020 21:46

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Russell being spectacular.
The Philadelphia Story - Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, James Stewart. So funny.
Bringing Up Baby
It's a Wonderful Life
Some Like it Hot
Goodbye Mr Chips - ultimate weepie
Singin in the Rain
Meet Me in St Louis
On Moonlight Bay / By the Light of the Silvery Moon (Doris Day)
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

MissSarahThane · 15/07/2020 21:50

The Third Man - should be in any list of top five British films.

This Happy Breed - about a lower middle class family in London between the wars.

Probably not considered PC these days, but Stagecoach is a great piece of storytelling. Action, character development, music, scenery.

And another vote for Casablanca - or indeed anything with Humphrey Bogart.

PuppyMonkey · 15/07/2020 21:50

I like the Doris Day romcoms - Pillow Talk, Move Over Darling etc.

Anything with Katherine Hepburn in it but especially Philadelphia Story - then watch High Society straight after.

Casablanca.

Streetcar Named Desire.

And if you like Sense and Sensibility, how about Room With a view?

Where can I watch classic movies? They were always on TV when I as young and I love so many, but I have no idea where I can watch them now despite having so much choice!

WokusPocus · 16/07/2020 15:25

Gone With the Wind - good for a hungover afternoon on the sofa
Funny Face - Audrey Hepburn
Strangers on a Train/ any Hitchcock
Philadelphia Story/ High Society - I have a soft spot for High Society because I grew up with the sound track and LOVE it.
Bringing up Baby
How to Marry a Millionaire
Desk Set
Any Fred Astaire films but especially the ones he costarred in with Ginger Rogers - Top Hat is fab

If you fancy some 50s/60s glamour, the TVs series of Mad Men and Masters of Sex are also amazing.

WokusPocus · 16/07/2020 15:37

OP you have inspired me! I am going into quarantine for two weeks for a minor operation - I will catch up on some old movies!

wowfudge · 16/07/2020 15:48

The Man Who Knew Too Much is another great Hitchcock film. I love Rear Window and North by Northwest too.

MGM musicals - great dancing and singing.

Some Like It Hot

wowfudge · 16/07/2020 15:51

Ice Cold In Alex is another one.

Great Expectations starring John Mills.

Not a film, but if you can get hold of the last BBC adaptation of Bleak House with Gillian Anderson in it, that was fab.

OohKittens · 16/07/2020 15:51

How green was my valley
The quiet man
These were my nans favourite films, we would watch them every week.

Strugglingtodomybest · 16/07/2020 15:56

I have a very big soft spot for The Towering Inferno and The Posiedon Adventure.

Then there's all the old war movies, including The Great Escape and Bridge over the River Kwai, and my favourite film ever: Das Boot.

NotyouGuillermo · 16/07/2020 15:59

The Ghost and Mrs Muir and the original version of The Haunting (so much better than the one with Catherine Zeta Jones)

RubyFakeLips · 16/07/2020 16:29

If you like The Quiet Man then I would recommend Rio Grande. John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, directed by John Ford again but made 2 years prior. Some great horse stunts too.

Many good recs on here but also:
Sunset Boulevard
The Apartment
South Pacific
His Girl Friday
Arsenic and Old Lace
Bridge on the River Kwai
True Grit (Joh Wayne version)
Chinatown
Godfather (first film is great standalone but I do love them as a trilogy)
Meet me in St Louis

In lockdown, we've watched nearly all the Best Picture Oscar winners going back to 1930s. Its been fabulous!
