Classic Film Recommendations

So, over the weekend during a particularly horrible hangover i watched 3 Audrey Hepburn films - Breakfast at Tiffany's, Roman Holidays & Sabrina and i loved them all.
Such a change from the usual modern mindnumbing, cringe films I watch.

Followed it up the next day with 'Jane Eyre'

Really enjoyed that too.

....so now im looking for anymore 'classic' film recommendations? Bonus points if i can access them through NOW tv/Netflix..

23trains I mentioned above Talkingpics which is on Virgin 445 and Sky 328. Sony Classic movies can be good and the BBC sometimes and they keep films on iPlayer for ages. If you have AppleTV or similar they have reasonable stock of movie classics.

WokusPocus · 16/07/2020 17:09

I just bribed dd16 with a coke to watch Desk Set with me! So excited....

MissSarahThane · 16/07/2020 17:14

If you like The Quiet Man then I would recommend Rio Grande. John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, directed by John Ford again but made 2 years prior.

Rio Grande is one of a trilogy of films about the US Cavalry made by John Ford and John Wayne. Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon are the other two.

Some great horse stunts too.

I should have mentioned the stunts in my recommendation of Stagecoach. Stuntman Yakima Canutt performed one of the classic film stunts.

Some classic films are available free on YouTube. This Happy Breed, which I mentioned yesterday, is.

The Manchurian Candidate
Stand by Me
The Commitments
Mississippi Burning
Brighton Rock - Richard Attenborough

Night of the Hunter. God, I love that film.

Cape Fear (original, though Scorsese’s remake is great too).

Funny Face is on, on Talking Pictures, on 30th July at 3pm.

LinemanForTheCounty · 16/07/2020 18:34

@23trains and @Davros there's a whole load on iPlayer at the minute as BBC 2 showed them during lockdown. Some really good ones like Top Hat which is still magical to watch.

Agree with Talking Pictures and also a pp's suggestion of YouTube although you have to pay for lots on there now. Vimeo and dailymotion are quite good for streaming as well, quite a lot of classic films both of those. Best way to find them is just googling the name of the film in quote marks and then typing either vimeo or dailymotion.

Davros · 16/07/2020 20:16

I love Top Hat. The Venice sets are brilliant

Elderflower14 · 16/07/2020 20:18

Bringing Up Baby
North By Northwest
High Society
The Third Man.

homemadecommunistrussia · 16/07/2020 20:32

The Gay Divorcee
The Apartment
The Philadelphia Story
Singing in the Rain
His Girl Friday
Bringing up Baby

@MissSarahThane John Ford Cavalry trilogy is my all time favourite. Watching all 3 back to back with nachos and chocolate being the signifier to the family I am in a PMT depression that only Ben Johnson and Sgt Quincannon can ease.

Wagonmaster is fab too and funny with it. Think I also like Sergeant Rutledge when I saw it nearly 40 years ago...

More John Ford classics would be The Searchers and Grapes of Wrath.

MissSarahThane · 16/07/2020 21:45

Ruby, I love all the characters in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, except the girl. Most of the time I want to slap her.

Another John Wayne film I like is Rio Bravo, co-starring Dean Martin. I fast forward over most of Angie Dickinson's scenes, though; she really doesn't add anything to the plot.

CatsArePeopleToo · 16/07/2020 21:56

Ship of Fools

DianasLasso · 16/07/2020 22:06

Quite a few of my faves are already up there:
All Ealing comedies
North by Northwest
The Phildelphia Story
The African Queen
Some Like it Hot
Casablanca

If Roman Holiday worked for you, you may want to explore more of Gregory Peck's films - Twelve O'Clock High is a brilliant war film. (And Gregory Peck was beautiful).

I have a soft spot for Michael Caine in the Harry Palmer films (Ipcress File etc.) They are fascinating in that they are not Bond - they're much more realistic.

Also classic Sidney Poitier - In the Heat of the Night (with Rod Steiger), and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracey).

Also in my "they don't make 'em like they used to" category is 9 to 5. (It's one of my "fuck, women's rights have actually gone backwards in some respects" films, in that I can't imagine a studio these days green-lighting a female ensemble piece like that any more - plus it's hilarious).

Aurorie11 · 16/07/2020 22:34

Sidney Poitier don’t forget to Sir with Love

Jocundest · 16/07/2020 23:01

Screwball comedies. Anything with Humphrey Bogart, especially Key Largo and To Have and Have Not. State of the Union, Adam’s Rib, The Women, Dark Victory.

KeeOe · 16/07/2020 23:10

The Uninvited. Ray Mailand ghost story c1942. For anyone who likes haunted house stories. Not available on Netflix but ahem easily by other means. Also Blithe Spirit. I have a penchant for 40s film. Especially ghosty ones.

Davros · 17/07/2020 08:12

Footsteps in the Fog is on Sony Classics this morning at 9.15am. I wouldn't normally be up and looking this early but Tesco's got me up Envy

Hiccupiscal · 17/07/2020 12:45

Last nights watching was 1960s Phsyco, I thought it was absolutely brilliant.
My DP even jumped at one point. Loved the OTT dramatic music & the plot twist, that I actually didn't expect Blush
Tonight I think its going to be "The Birds"

I'm looking forward to trying the channels mentioned by PP. I do my film watching on an evening, but soon my DC are going abroad for my exH wedding and ill need as much "take your mind off things" ammunition as possible! So watching films on an afternoon would be lovely. Bonus if its raining and miserable outside and I can use a blanket and snacks without feeling like im "wasting the day"

Lovely thread Op.
I’m just about to start watching Top Hat on iplayer.
Makes me wish I could dance though 😀

Hels20 · 17/07/2020 14:29

A Wonderful Life - it doesn’t just have to be watched at Christmas

West Side Story - the dancing and music is amazing

Mildred Pierce

Gone with the Wind (realise this might be controversial but for the romance - still one of my favourites)

AuntMasha · 17/07/2020 14:40

If you’re watching Hitchcock, ‘Rear Window’ is one of his best. Also ‘Rebecca’.

I’m an Olivia de Havilland fan (She recently turned 104!) and she starred in some great Classics. I’d recommend ‘My Cousin Rachel’, ‘The Snake Pit’ and ‘The Heiress’.

AuntMasha · 17/07/2020 15:02

Oh, and how can I forget, ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Janes’ with Joan Crawford and Bette Davis - wonderfully camp, bitchy and unique psychological horror.
