Thanks lbake for making the Eat Out campaign filthy Grin

The vouchers only come into effect in August, and I'm hoping Drakeford the Slug will have dithered his way into making a decision on indoor eating in restaurants by then. I'll definitely be using it, I even know where!

SockYarn · 08/07/2020 16:33

Restaurants have to sign up to the scheme. I reckon some of the good bistro type places in my city which have been innovating through the pandemic with cook at home boxes and pizza kits will be signing up. As well as the bigger chains like Wagamama, Nandos or Prezzo.

I'd choose to use our vouchers with a local independent if possible though, they need our support. Especially when their tourist season has been non-existent and big events like christmas nights out might not be happening either.

Nihiloxica · 08/07/2020 16:40

I don't think we get vouchers, I think restaurants who are part of the scheme will get 50% of the price of a meal Mon-Wed refunded by the government.

FrugiFan · 08/07/2020 16:42

I know it's been said before, but if I have to read a variation on "the government doesn't care about lives they're only interested in the economy" I'm going to start tearing my hair out!

justasking111 · 08/07/2020 16:43

If the restaurants have to wait for refunds some will have trouble paying wages, staff cannot wait for the government to cough up.

justasking111 · 08/07/2020 16:47

Went to Tesco a month since I have been, no one way system, still 2 metre signs on the floor I was absolutely discombobulated. People in masks I noticed wombling all over the place. Added to that my vertigo kicked in I do have trouble with high shelving and looking up and down when I have not done it for ages.

I had to phone son to ask which noodles he liked because my mind went blank.

NannyPhlegm · 08/07/2020 16:51

Reading a bit more on it, and it looks like it's only valid Mon-Thu. So it is effectively encouraging people out on the dead nights. They probably expect weekend crowds to return naturally and pay full whack. So, if it works as it's supposed to, it will add to the expected clientele

justasking111 · 08/07/2020 16:51

Stamp duty in Wales is devolved called land tax, wonder if Drakeford would be interested in scrapping it, somehow I doubt it. Labour are not enamoured of house owners.

Just been reading up a bit more. A 'simple website' opening Monday which any restaurant can choose to sign to sign up to. The restaurant then claims back the funds which will be paid back within 5 days. That coupled with the VAT drop to 5% could really make a difference, especially to independents. Having experienced the rates scheme and the furlough scheme I can honestly say that the HMRC have actually been seriously impressive in the execution of these initiatives. I bet the money will be much quicker than 5 days.
Mascotte · 08/07/2020 16:56

So... Queen Nic has decreed that France is a quarantine free destination. So my holiday is on!

justasking111 · 08/07/2020 16:57

That is good @Ibake is it just for England or the whole of the UK?

Cattermole · 08/07/2020 17:10

@SockYarn did you know those restaurants were offering cabaret as well? Death-defying dancing and some light flogging....I been to nightclubs like that....

Cattermole · 08/07/2020 17:12

PS am I too nice, or are people just overlooking the idea of me (sadly) taking my poor vulnerable 80 yr old mother to these restaurants of death?

SockYarn · 08/07/2020 17:12

And i've just been accused of being a tory shill!

Bingo!

Orangeblossom78 · 08/07/2020 17:26

Haha, Sockyarn they haven't done that in a while. The dementors used to go that with anyone positive (schools I remember- a parent being positive over that) but thought that had died out. Lucky you Wink

Orangeblossom78 · 08/07/2020 17:27

Did you see the poster of doom going on about fast food, same one who has been randomly posting article from the Guardian about long time problems of doom from 'even mild cases' he is a delight.

Willitneverend · 08/07/2020 17:29

Hell yeah, I'm using the vouchers! I get a fresh nice sandwich for a takeaway lunch from local cafe about once a week so would definitely sit in. And hopefully will go out for a family dinner at least once.

Our local farm park place that didn't sell out last Saturday is apparently booked out for this Saturday, so hopefully folk are feeling a bit more confident.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 08/07/2020 17:30

I'd quite like to go out for a meal in August - just not sure anywhere local is going to open - its from 13 July outside in Wales and I can't think of anywhere with enough outdoor space.

What does 'wombling' mean? Confused

Just been into town to Waitrose. Some chinese tourists back in the city interestingly, just a family or two. Lady with American accent in Waitrose telling the guy behind the till she is from Ohio, but they have an office over here so she's all over the place all the time

Prooably dementor hell! It was pretty quiet and lots of yellow stickers! Still, it is loads better, back to normal really. One way system etc gone. Probably wombled myself but there we go.

Orangeblossom78 · 08/07/2020 17:32

Still only a mask or two around. Chinese had some on.

BarkandCheese · 08/07/2020 17:34

I rarely venture into any corona or politics threads now, they send my mood plummeting through the floor with the dementoring. Has anyone brought up obesity re the half price meals out yet? The competitive under eaters are probably wetting themselves to say how they’d never eat out because calories.

I went on a murder spree to IKEA today. Considering it was a wet Wednesday afternoon the queue was pretty big, we waited around half an hour to get in. I wouldn’t have bothered waiting if it was local but we’d driven all the way to lakeside and paid for the Dartford crossing so we weren’t going to just turn around and go home.

Cattermole · 08/07/2020 17:36

@Orangeblossom78 Him Indoors calls picking up things that don't rightly belong to you and reissuing them, "wombling".
Making good use of the things that we find, you understand...

Orangeblossom78 · 08/07/2020 17:42

Sometimes I have been known to distractedly put my shopping in another person's trolley...maybe that would count

Ibake · 08/07/2020 17:43

@justasking111

That is good *@Ibake* is it just for England or the whole of the UK?
Not sure. Everything I've read says UK but I know not all journos always recognise the difference!
Spudlet · 08/07/2020 17:43

I have to admit, we turned down an invitation to the pub this weekend. We are meant to be going on holiday in a couple of weeks, and the thought of getting a call and being told to self-isolate makes me feel sick.

I’m not particularly afraid of the virus itself, more of being trapped in the house again Sad
